โExcuse me?โ His voice has that annoying, raspy quality to it that vibrates right against your shoulder blade. โFour? Iโm literally six-foot-plus of pure muscle, and I smell like your favourite perfume. That was at least an eight.โ
โPoints deducted because...โ you counter, tapping your pen against your chin thoughtfully. โYou leaned too much of your weight on me. Plus, your chin poked my head. Try harder next time, Nishimura.โ
In reality, your heart is currently pounding so hard. Rikiโs hugs are, unfortunately, Godโs gift to humanity. He always radiates this so much heat, and his oversized hoodies always smell like a mix of clean linen and scent of the vanilla lip balm he steals from you. Itโs a miracle you haven't dissolved into a puddle on the hardwood floor.
But you would rather jump into a frozen lake than admit that to him. The boy already has an ego the size of Seoul; giving him a perfect score on day one would ruin all the fun.
Riki scoffs, letting go of you completely and stepping back. He crosses his arms, a petulant pout settling on his lips. โFine. You want to be meam? Just wait.โ
The second attempt happens three days later, and itโs entirely unprovoked.
Youโre standing at the kitchen counter, aggressively trying to stab open a stubborn plastic seal on a container of strawberries. Suddenly, a pair of long, lean arms wrap firmly around your waist from behind, lifting you completely off your feet for a terrifying half-second before setting you back down.
Riki buries his face into the crook of your neck, his damp, post-shower hair cold against your skin. He holds you tight, trapping your arms against your sides, completely immobilizing you. Itโs heavy and solid and makes your stomach do a weird, fluttering flip that leaves you slightly breathless.
โWell?โ he murmurs, his lips brushing against your collarbone as he speaks.
You swallow hard, staring blindly at the strawberries. โFive point five.โ
Riki groans loudly, dropping his forehead against your shoulder. โAre you kidding me? I held you perfectly! No poking, no leaning!โ
โToo aggressive,โ you lie smoothly, your voice miraculously steady. โI felt like I was being tackled by a bear. A hug should be an embrace, Riki.โ
He pulls away, glaring down at you with a look of frustration. His cheeks are dusted with a faint, pink flushโwhether from the heat of the shower or genuine annoyance, you canโt tell, but itโs dangerously cute.

You turn your head just enough to look at him, your nose brushing against his cheek. His eyes are wide and searching, completely devoid of his usual bratty arrogance. He just looks incredibly soft.

A slow, breathless smile breaks across Rikiโs face, his dimples peeking out in the shadows. โEasy fix.โ
He tightens his arms, burying his face into the side of your neck, squeezing you so close that you can feel the rapid, synchronized thumping of his heart against yours. Itโs perfect. Itโs a total ten, but as you close your eyes and let yourself melt into him, you decide youโll make him work for that final point for just a little bit longer.

Before the creep can even blink, a hand clad in chunky silver rings clamps down on his shoulder and rips him backwards with a violent force.
โShe said sheโs waiting for her boyfriend,โ Jay snarls, his voice dropping into a register so dark and threatening it sends a shiver straight down your spine.
The drunk guy stumbles, gets his footing, and wildly swings a fist. Jay doesnโt even flinch. He sidesteps the sloppy punch and drives his own fist directly into the guyโs jaw. A loud crack echoes under the fading house music, and the guy crumples to the sticky floor, groaning.
Jay takes half a step forward to finish the job, his chest heaving, dark eyes completely feral, but you grab the back of his leather jacket. โJay. Stop. Letโs just go.โ
He freezes instantly at your touch. The raging edge melts out of his posture as he turns around, wrapping a protective arm around your shoulders and practically carrying you out the back exit.
You are going to lose your mind.
The fluorescent lights of Jayโs tiny bathroom are way too bright (you keep telling him to change those, and he keeps forgetting) . You are sitting on the edge of the porcelain sink, the first-aid kit open on your lap, sighing at the choices made by your entirely too impulsive rockstar boyfriend.
Stupid, stupid Jay. He should have just yelled at the guy. Gotten a bouncer. Done literally anything other than throwing a bare-knuckle punch at a skull. If you had been faster, you would have pulled him aside and berated him for his poor life choices. But instead, you are here, swiping a cotton pad soaked in rubbing alcohol over his bleeding knuckles.
Jay hisses, stepping closer so heโs trapped perfectly between your knees.
โHold still,โ you scold, your eyes tracing the damage. These are his hands. The long fingers. The calloused fingertips. Youโve felt them trailing down your spine a thousand times, and the thought of them getting crushed against some idiot's jaw makes you want to scream. โYou play guitar, Jay. You look down at his hands, imagining how it would feel to just ban him from ever leaving the apartment so he canโt get hurt. Just keeping him here, cuddling with him after a long day, his face buried in the crook of your neck while you play with the messy ends of his hair.
He shifts closer, resting his chin right against your stomach and looking up at you through his messy hair. โDid he hurt you?โ
โNo. You got to him before he could.โ
Jay hums, a low vibration against your stomach. โGood. If he had actually hurt you, I would have broken my other hand on his face.โ
โStop saying that,โ you mutter, wrapping a white bandage carefully around his knuckles, securing it tightly but gently. You smooth your thumbs over the back of his hand.
Jay watches your face the entire time. He doesnโt wince โ not even when the alcohol bites into his wound or the bandages pull tight. His eyes are soft, almost unbearably so, practically dripping with an adoration that makes you feel a little weak in the knees. He lifts his uninjured hand to cup your cheek, his thumb brushing over your cheekbone.
โYou were so brave tonight, baby,โ he murmurs, leaning up just enough to press a soft, lingering kiss to the corner of your mouth.
โI didnโt do anything,โ you whisper, your hands dropping to rest on his shoulders.
โYou handled it. You pushed him away. Good girl.โ
The praise melts every single ounce of annoyance right out of your system. Itโs entirely unfair how easily he disarms you. You trace his annoying face, every single inch of it captivating, from the sharp slope of his jaw to the stupidly long eyelashes to the stupidly plush lips that are currently smiling against your skin.
โYouโre ridiculous,โ you say, letting him pull you down off the counter and into his chest.
โIโm obsessed with you,โ he corrects easily, burying his face in your hair, breathing you in like heโs been drowning all night. โAnd next time, Iโll just hit him with the bass guitar. Protect the hands.โ
You groan, hitting his chest lightly. โI will actually kill you.โ

itโs actually ridiculous how jay refuses to blink while watching you get dressed for your anniversary dinner because heโs leaning against the doorframe looking like an absolute model himself, but heโs completely hyper-fixated on the way youโre styling your hair. he has this knowing smirk on his face like heโs already thinking about how heโs going to show you off later, and no matter how many times you tell him to go wait in the living room, he just hums and says heโd rather stay right where he is... until your daughter waddles into the room and notices her dad staring a little too hard. she immediately gasps dramatically and runs over to push against his legs with all her might, telling him that staring isn't polite and that mommy needs space to get pretty, effectively pushing a very amused jay out into the hallway before she literally slams the bedroom door shut in his face to keep you safe from his staring.
SIM JAEYUN
the way jake looks at you when youโre getting ready is enough to make anyone melt because he has those big puppy dog eyes that just track your every movement like you hung the stars in the sky, and he keeps whispering little compliments under his breath about how beautiful you are even when youโre just wearing a bathrobe. itโs super sweet but totally flustering because you canโt even put on your lipstick properly with him sighing dreamily every five seconds, which prompts your little boy to intervene on your behalf. he literally climbs up onto the bed behind jake and wraps his tiny hands over his dad's eyes like a blindfold, loudly declaring that dad is banned from looking until mommy gives the final reveal. jake starts whining playfully and tries to pry the little hands off his face saying he just wants to see his beautiful wife, but your son acts like a strict security guard and refuses to budge an inch.

you literally canโt even brush your hair without sunoo practically whining from the doorway because he thinks you look way too pretty to be going out tonight and he keeps dramatically sighing about how he just wants to keep you all to himself in the house. heโs resting his head against the door and pouting while watching you apply your lip gloss, his eyes completely glued to you in this extremely endearing way... but your son is having absolutely none of it. taking his role as your tiny protector very seriously, he grabs his plastic toy sword and stands right in the doorway between you and sunoo, pointing it at his dad and warning him that he needs to back away from mommy immediately. sunoo immediately gasps and puts his hands up in mock surrender, dramatically whispering to you that your bodyguard is too scary and he guesses he'll just have to wait patiently in the living room like a good boy.

jungwon has this habit of just quietly existing in your space while you get ready, sitting cross-legged on the floor playing with the cat but totally stealing these lingering, dimpled smiles at you through the mirror whenever he thinks you aren't looking, though you can totally see him. his gaze is so warm and fond that it makes butterflies erupt in your stomach all over again, but your daughter is quick to interrupt the romantic tension because she runs into the room and immediately identifies her dad as a threat to your getting-ready routine. she practically throws herself over jungwon's eyes, burying his face into her chest and telling him no looking at mommy until she's done being a princess. jungwon just chuckles that sweet laugh of his and wraps his arms around her, trying to bribe his tiny security guard with the promise of ice cream if she just lets him look at you for one more minute, but she firmly shakes her head and demands he close his eyes tightly.

ni-ki being so annoying keeps poking you while youโre trying to do your makeup, and he refuses to look away even when you swat at his chest and tell him to stop staring at you so intensely. he just wraps his arms around your waist from behind and rests his chin on your head, watching your reflection with this incredibly focused look that makes you completely forget how to use your mascara ... until your little boy comes storming in to save the day. your son grabs onto ni-ki's pant leg and starts tugging with all his tiny strength, scolding his dad for being a creep and bothering mommy while she's busy. ni-ki pretends to be shocked by the accusation and tries to argue that he's just admiring his beautiful wife, but your tiny bodyguard physically wedges himself between ni-ki's legs and pushes him backward until ni-ki finally yields with a laugh, leaving you to finish your makeup in peace while your son stands guard at the door with his arms crossed.

The headstone is neat. It has his name carved into it in a clean, minimalist font that she knows he would have approved of.
PARK SUNGHOON
"You really picked a scenic spot," Y/N whispers, her voice cracking. She drops to her knees on the grass, completely uncaring of the mud staining her jeans. "You always liked a good view. Smug bastard."
She tries to laugh, but it turns into a jagged, suffocating sob that catches in her throat. She presses her palms against the cold stone, wishing with every fiber of her being that the granite would warm up, that it would turn into a broad shoulder, a sharp jawline, a hand reaching out to flick her forehead and tell her sheโs being dramatic.
"Y/N?"
A soft, fragile voice breaks through the quiet. Y/N flinches, wiping her face hastily with the oversized sleeves of the hoodie as she turns around.
Sunghoonโs mother is standing a few paces back. She looks like sheโs aged ten years in a fortnight. Her eyes are hollow, her shoulders smaller than Y/N remembers. In her hands, sheโs clutching a small, black velvet jewelry pouchโthe exact one Y/N remembers seeing on Sunghoonโs desk a lifetime ago.
"Oh, Mrs. Park," Y/N breathes, scrambling to her feet. "I'm sorry, I can leave if you wanted some time alone withโ"
"No, no, stay. Please," his mother says, her voice trembling as she steps forward. She forces a small, heartbreaking smile, her eyes dropping to the grey hoodie swallowing Y/Nโs frame. "He... he wanted you to have this. He made me promise to give it to you after the funeral, but I... I needed a few days to find the strength to givr it to you."
She presses the small velvet pouch into Y/Nโs hands. Inside, something small and heavy shifts against the fabric.
"Thereโs a note inside," his mother whispers, her hand lingering on Y/Nโs cheek for a second, cold and shaking. "He spent three hours writing it, Y/N. His hands were shaking so badly toward the end, he could barely hold the pen. But he wouldn't let me help him. He said it had to be his own handwriting."
Before Y/N can say anything, his mother gently pats her arm and walks away, leaving her alone with the quiet, the headstone, and the pouch.
Y/Nโs fingers are trembling so hard she can barely loosen the drawstring. When she pulls the contents out, the first thing that falls into her palm is the silver ring. The Roman numerals engraved on the inside catch the faint afternoon sunlight.
And then, folded into a tight, neat square at the bottom of the pouch, is a piece of lined notebook paper. Y/N unfolds it slowly.
To the girl in the camo crocs,

She slides the silver ring onto her finger. It fits perfectly. Itโs cold against her skin, a permanent reminder of the boy who spent his final breaths forcing her to hate him, just so she wouldn't have to feel the exact agony that is currently tearing her apart.
Y/N sinks lower into the mud, burying her face into the collar of his grey hoodie, inhaling the faint, disappearing scent of lavender, and realizes that Sunghoon won. He got exactly what he wanted. He saved her from the hospital bed.
But as she stares at his name carved into the stone, her finger gripping the ring, she realizes the ultimate, devastating truth.
He didn't save her from the trauma. He just made her carry it alone.
