        FEAR WAS THE MOST COMMON reaction ben witnessed when people came face to face with either his or his sister’s direwolf. especially when they traveled south. the northerners were used to the wolves at this point, but direwolves never ventured south. so the young lady’s fascination was a surprise, but a welcome one. benjen tired of people looking at valdis as if she was an uncontrollable monster. he wouldn’t have allowed a violent creature around his family. direwolves may be large and intimidating, but they were intelligent creatures, capable of learning and adapting to different environments. they were far smarter than the targaryens’ dragons in his opinion.          “ she’s as tame as a direwolf can be. i found her when she was a pup and raised her myself. so she’s been around people all her life. however, she is still a wolf. the wildness cannot be completely erased nor would i wish it to be. ”

How very Northern. Eilonwy has not had much cause to meet with any Starks so far, and the tales she has heard of the North never seemed very appealing. For a girl raised in Highgarden, where the grass grows sweet and thick and warm flowers greet the air each sunrise, she could not fathom a life spent in grey castles surrounded by bare trees and winds that bite. But this Direwolf has a wildness about it, a sense of power and purpose, the likes of which she cannot tear her gaze from; and when she looks to the man standing by it, she sees that echoed in him. Perhaps the North is not so terrible. “She would not be so majestic if she were as tame as a pampered lap dog,” Eilonwy nods, wanting desperately to touch the Direwolf; her hand is stayed by common sense, and a healthy respect for those fangs as long as her fingers. “I hear that wildness is as intrinsic to the North as the Stark name; and I see it in your companion. What is it like there?”. She is filled with a sudden longing for tales of far off places. She has never left the Reach until this trip, and it is only just starting to occur to her how vast the world truly is.

Rodrik didn’t attend the funeral, catching up on his reading as he sat lazily in one of the many chairs in the library. His legs were propped up, spread as wide as he liked as he sipped from a goblet of wine.

He glanced up when he heard the floor shift, closing his book and sitting it down.

“Couldn’t stand the line of mourners either?”

Eilonwy had sworn to herself that she would go to the funeral. It was only proper. But when she approached, and saw the thick crowds of heavily perfumed lords and ladies, a fear overtook her and she fled. Telling herself that she would return as soon as she felt able, Eilonwy tugged at her gown and took great gulps of calming air, taking herself to where the library was said to be. Libraries have always been a comfort to her, with their quiet solitude.

Not today, though. She hadn’t expected to see anyone, yet there he was, and it would be impolite to leave now. “I don’t fare well in crowds,” she admits, because although it is embarrassing, it’s less so than anyone thinking she is ill-mannered. “You aren’t attending?”

Aelora had returned to the capital and not less than a fortnight later, two major deaths had occurred. She sat at her table, her hand pulling the seahorse around on the necklace chain. It was hard for Aelora to process. King Vaegon was not apart of her house, but he had been someone she had seen nearly daily from the age of three years old until she was eighteen. She picked up the ink-stained feather and set it inside of the inkpot, deciding that she would not be completing the letter to her uncle. Aelora let out a deep sigh, falling back in chair. She began wondering who killed the queen, and why. Then, as her thoughts began to wander on to what the killer wanted. Did he want the king to kill himself out of melancholy? Aelora rose from her chair and began to start pacing, but then she changed her mind and decided to walk down to the throne room. 

As she briskly walked through the corridors of the keep, she began to crave the feeling of being on horse. It had been so long since she rode into the fields outside of the Keep, but she knew that would not be for awhile, as King’s Landing was not allowing anybody to leave. She reminded herself to slow down. There was a killer on the loose, and for a paranoid moment she wondered if there was anyone behind her. Aelora reminded herself not to be paranoid, then as she stopped walking and leaned on a pillar, staring at the throne- she realized she had forgot to breathe. The silver haired woman let out a deep breath and felt a sense of calm for a moment in the silence. But, she couldn’t help but let herself jump when she heard foot steps. “Hello,” she said in acknowledgment. “I’d say good evening, but this is not one.”

No one smiles any more. As is only proper and expected, of course, but it feels like a great weight upon Eilonwy’s shoulders, to see the deep lines of mourning in everyone’s faces. She didn’t know the King or Queen, but it frightens her to see how fragile life can be. Her own mourning is quite a selfish one, not for the fallen monarchs but for her own mortality.

She rubs at her shoulder absently, fingers slipping beneath the sleeves of her dress to feel at the raised, scarred skin there. She’d almost died, once, out of foolishness. After seeing how the Queen’s death affected the King, she is glad she lived. How dreadful, to be the cause of such suffering.

It gives Eilonwy great anxiety to leave her rooms, and she took most of her meals there in private, but one cannot linger forever. She was forced to leave to pay her respects, and that means being constantly waylaid by conversation. She misses it, in a way, because she used to love people. She still does, but somehow still finds her belly writhing each time she sees a new face. “It is not the celebration we all thought we were coming to,” Eilonwy agrees, inclining her head. “To tell the truth, I cannot help but feel that I am intruding upon the grief of the Targaryen’s. Daemion and Rhaenys must want nothing more than to be alone, but they must bear a castleful of guests instead.”

Queen Cerelle’s death might not have been a terrible shock for her, nor a grief, but she had definitely not expected the demise of King Vaegon so soon after. It felt impossible, it felt beyond all kinds of logic and reason that she could think of. For Arwyn, it was also a reality, she had done more than think of, but it was all too rash for her liking. It filled her with alarming suspicion, not only that but also a complete sense of lack of control. There were certain people she was eager to speak with, hoping for answers, but she had not escaped the fact that ever watchful eyes were glued to her now. Everyone was still under suspicion, understandably security was at the highest to protect the rest of the royal family. As she stood upon the balcony overlooking the funeral preparations, she suddenly realised what she had dipped her toe into. 

A sob broke through the fearful silence, she could hear those around her all shuffling to comfort whoever had broken down, but Arwyn did not move an inch. She simply looked after the young women departing in a hurry, her expression betraying nothing, it showed no pain, no sorrow, but she could not hide her worry, it was etched into the lines of her face. She was more concerned with the fate of her own house, of the Reach and all those under her protection. Lady Tyrell heard footsteps approach her, she could the presence of another getting closer, but she did not turn around, half expecting it to be one of the guards trailing her.

❝Do you think they will be together in death?❞ she asked in a flat voice, not even bothering to check who had taken place by her side. Her dark eyes were fixed upon the multitude of servants readying the funerals. ❝Marriage is supposed to assure that, is it not? They always say forever at the ceremonies.❞ She sighed softly. ❝I remember thinking how awful forever must be if trapped in a loveless marriage, but the king loved his queen, you could hear it in his cries when he saw her body. Perhaps for them, it would be a mercy by the gods.❞

Eilonwy takes the tentative steps of a newborn doe, as if she fears the cool stone floors of this castle may be disturbed by her passage. She’s always been that way, unsure of her step, faltering in her voice. She lacks the bearing of a lady, much though she wishes it were otherwise.

Arwyyn has the bearing of a lady. The lady, in fact, of the Reach. Perhaps not a perfect lady, but in presence she lacks nothing. She holds herself with a natural confidence, and Eilonwy cannot help but wonder how it is that her sister was born with this confidence, when she herself had inherited none of it. Even when they had fought as youths, if Arwyn snapped, Eilonwy would scurry away. She knew she was clingy, she knew she was deficient, and she knows Arwyn cannot impart any of that confidence in her. 

They’ve both grown beyond those childish clashes, but Eilonwy still feels anxious whenever she approaches her sister. But she feels so terribly unsafe right now, and needs to be with family. “I would say it is romantic, were it not so terrible. I think that I would rather never love at all than feel a loss like King Vaegon.”

After Several hours, Lyarra had grown irritable and weary of the whole situation. All she wanted was to return home, to Winterfell and spend hours on end running from her duties surrounded by winter roses. Not stuck in a room full of people she hardly knew. The only comfort was Shadow’s constant presence at her side, the wolf nudging her hip every so often to calm her down when she started to pace. But once more, she found herself irritable, even more so than before and pacing once more. 

“Do you think they will allow us to leave any time soon?” She asked, calling out to no one in particular, mostly voicing her own thoughts. “I wish to retire it has been a long day.”

A good question, but Eilonwy doesn’t have the answers. None of them do. She’s not sure she would say she is upset, per se, because she did not know the queen. It is frightening nonetheless, to know that there is a killer; Eilonwy may not be the most important or notable noble present, but if someone is seeking the destruction of the rich and powerful, she isn’t safe. “I do not think I could sleep even if we were allowed out; I cannot shake the image in my mind... those coals. It’s too cruel. I would not think a person could be capable of such a thing.” Of course people will murder each other, but hot coals down the throat? That’s torturous, it is barbaric. Give her a throat slit by razor edged steel any day.

        THERE WAS LITTLE IN THE south that benjen enjoyed. it was too warm and crowded, not to mention dangerous. one never knew what was lurking underneath the surface at king’s landing. especially now that there was a murderer on the loose. he would much rather be back home in winterfell, but with tensions running high he didn’t dare let his desires known. he had managed to find a relatively quiet area of the hall and stood waiting. the only sign of his agitation was valdis’ actions; the direwolf paced back and forth around her master, watching the other lords and ladies in the room. she was looking for danger. ben didn’t notice the other person approaching, but his wolf did. valdis’ lip curled upwards and she growled in warning, which caught ben’s attention.          “ she doesn’t mean you any harm. the events have simply set her on edge. ”

Eilonwy has never seen such a creature. The wolf is  H U G E  beyond belief, each padding step of its powerful paws sending muscles rippling beneath its fur. It frightens her, and intrigues her. People often frighten her; they are unpredictable and cruel. This wolf, she thinks, is honest. She is inexperienced with animals - even the horses are alien to her, as she would never ride out. And no doubt this wolf could rip her to shreds if it had a notion to, so she resists the urge compelling her to drop down and kiss its glossy nose, instead smiling broadly at it, scarcely noticing the nobleman that stands by it. “She’s magnificent. It is hard to believe such a creature can stand so civilly here - gods know this hall has seen worse than growls today. But surely she is not tame?” she asks, eyes bright with interest. She’s read stories of direwolves, but had not thought to ever encounter one.

Mereya tugged on the waist of her dress, searching for the non-existent dagger that would have typically been hidden within it, as annoyance was anything but masked by the scowl she wore. King’s landing may have possessed scenic beauty, but its people appeared to be less than deserving of it.  “Self-righteous bastard…” She muttered, her comment aimed at a boisterous man she did not care to learn the name of, before taking a long sip of sickeningly sweet wine.

Eilonwy is a little shocked by the muttered words; it’s not as though she has never seen irritation or heard insults before, but surely at a time like this, with so much tension and suspicion, they should lay aside their differences. And, to think pragmatically, if a murderer is among them, surely the sensible thing is to keep everyone sweet. Then again, the man is awfully loud, and it’s certainly grating on Eilonwy, though she is too polite to comment. “Perhaps he boasts because he is frightened,” she offers, realising how naive the words sound even as she speaks them. She’s too old now to try and believe the best in everyone; it looks foolish on her.

> Eilonwy was a sweet, gentle-natured child in her younger years, forever offering up help to the servants and making gifts for her family.

> When she was eight, she was trying to assist in the kitchen despite her status, and knocked a pan of boiling wine onto herself.

> The best healers were brought in to help her, but a bout of infection and a long healing process have left Eilonwy with a scar covering her left shoulder and most of her body.

> Though the scars were scarcely visible through most of her gowns, she was intensely self conscious, and grew into an intensely private young woman.

> She never left Highgarden, and although she loves the beautiful flower gardens deeply, she would only venture out after dark. The servants planted a night garden for her filled with evening primrose and moonflowers.

> In her self imposed isolation, Eilonwy took to music, and still enjoys writing her own pieces. It is rare for anyone to hear her play or sing, bar occasionally her siblings, but she enjoys it nonetheless.

> She was permitted this hermetic lifestyle, although it was occasionally expressed that she might one day be married. When the coronation was announced, it was deemed ill mannered of Eilonwy not to attend, and so she was finally forced from her hiding place.

> The first time she has left The Keep, or met new people, has put her under a lot of stress. Although she is sweet tempered, her mood does swing on occasion as she is frightened.
