The crowd roared in joyous celebration at the clattering of armour and the spill of blood. As the knights fell to the sandy dirt below the high, melted towers of Harrenhall. Tents littered the grounds, and large seating for the various events for the many Lords and Knights to participate. The many second sons looking for glory and praise from their fathers, or blood-thirsty boys seeking chaos and cruelty.

Whether for good or bad, the Tourney of Harrenhall would find its place in the historical notes of Westeros.

As all this occurred under the watch of many lords and ladies, far to the back of camp, a smaller by sweeter moment occurred.

Howland Reed stood surrounded by tents. His short, slender body trembling softly, his knees almost knocking together, his mossy green tunic miles too big for him.

Benjen Stark stood helping the young Reed into some decent armour after his scrape with some overexcited squire boys.

“I- I don’t know about this Benjen…” he whined, as the helm was rather aggressively placed on his head, of course, it was too big for him and came down too far, blocking his eyes completely.

“Nonsense, you’ll be fine.” Benjen laughed fixing the helm for him, “You are the heir to the Neck, soon to be lord of Greywater watch, are you just going to take that shit from some squire boys?”

“Yes.” Howland nodded,

“Howland… come on,” Benjen sighed, clipping the chest plate on, “Be assertive!”

“I don’t wanna be assertive,” Howland whined, “I wanna go, and hide under the feast table,”

“Be brave, Howland!” He laughed,

“I am not brave!”

“But you are a Lizard Lion of House Reed.”

“… Yeah, freshly hatched.”

“You’ll be fine,” he laughed as he pulled his horse over and hoisted Howland up and onto the horse.

“He doesn’t look fine!” Howland complained, looking at yet another man being taken to the medical tent,

“Yes, and you’ll do better than him.” Benjen laughed, “Off you go.”

“No! No wait! Benjen!” Howland complained as the horse took him off across the camp,

Benjen crossed his arms and couldn’t hold back his laughter.

“Fine line between Motivation and pure Manipulation.” A sultry voice spoke up,

Immediately, he stiffened and ran a hand through his dark hair, before he turned and offered his hand, “My lady Bolton.”

Y/n Bolton chuckled as she fully emerged from her tent, dressed in her pink gown with red embroidery, she slowly slid her hand into his own, doing her worst to hide her smile.

Benjen happily gripped her hand and tugged her closer. He softly kissed her hand, allowing his lips to linger longer than he should. “I must say, the Riverland’s sun seems to agree with you, my lady. I didn’t imagine you could be more beautiful.”

“You may look, my lord Stark.” She nodded before playfully slapping his cheek and taking her hand away, “But mustn’t touch.”

“Ohh yes, how could I forget?” he rolled his eyes, “You are for one set of hands only, aren’t you?” He sniggered, “Remind me? What is his name again?” He scoffed, wrapping his arms around her,

“Lord Royce,” she reminds him,

“Ahh, yes, I am sure lord Royce would not want you spoiled by a Stark.” He smirked,

“So you best not fuel such suspicions on my honour.”

“Atleast not in full view anyway,” he winked, “My lady,” He offered his hand once more,

She playfully rolled her eyes and took his hand once more before they snuck away to a nearby empty tent.

Benjen slowly trotted his horse along the small mountain path, heading forward to the castle that had summoned him. At first, he hadn’t wanted to attend, or to simply send one of the many other men of the Knight’s watch to the task. But he knew in his heart why he had been the one to receive this raven, and why it should be he to take on this duty.

He soon arrived at Runestone, the ancient castle looming high above him and his horse. He pulled into the courtyard and immediately found the family waiting for him.

Lord Yohn Royce stood with his small army of children, three strapping boys and six beautiful daughters. All of them gave him such a strange feeling of melancholy whenever he looked upon them. But … he knew why.

As there on the castle steps, stood Y/n. Now Lady Royce, as she had been for many years. The moment he saw her, regardless of her dull brown clothes and grey streaks in her hair. His heart still beat like a rabbit’s joyous thump. Even after all these years, and all the oaths of the Knights watch, he knew if she asked him… he’d have forsaken it all for her. As he would have all those years ago.

“Benjen Stark!” Lord Royce proclaimed,

“Lord Royce,” He nodded back,

“Will you take wine? Food and rest for you and your stead?”

“No, no, it’s no bother, my lord. Merely here for the recruit. And then it’s a long trek to the wall.”

“Yes, of course.” Yohn sighed and briefly embraced his youngest son, “Be a good boy now, Waymar.”

“Yes, I know, Father,” Waymar whined,

Waymar bid goodbye to his sisters and brothers before going to fetch his horse from the stables.

The family slowly went inside as the rain began to pour, all but Y/n.

A silence sat between them for a while longer than a moment, the hush of the rain keeping them almost encapsulated.

“My lady,” he nodded,

“Time has been kind to you, Benjen.”

“Not as kind as it has to you, Y/n.”

“I suppose it brings you sadness… to see me in this way.”

“No, I am… I am delighted for you, my lady,” he lied.

“You need not lie to me,” she scoffed,

“I admit, my envy,” he nodded, “That he… got to have you, as his lady, as his bride, to have you bless him with… so many children.” He explained, “But still, I am delighted that this is a life you may enjoy.”

“Is it a life you regret? That my son now goes?”

“I do not regret my oaths, My lady.” He nodded, “My only regret… is that I didn’t fight for your hand.”

“He’d have killed you,” She laughed,

“Maybe,” He sighed, “But then I would know the answer. And not be left alone at night in Castle black, wondering what might have been.”

“There are days… even I wonder.” She sighed, “But I am happy,”

“You have a beautiful family.”

“Umm… three sweet boys, six beautiful girls, three grandsons to spoil.”

“Quiet the life.”

“And yourself?”

“My life is the realms,” He nodded, “I have thousands of brothers, and I will be rejoiced to know your son among them.”

She nodded, “Waymar… is my son, youngest of my boys.” She said her tone turned solemn, “I know what he swears to, I know how you must train him, I know… the things he will have to see.” She shivered, “Please, Benjen, if you… Ever had love for me? Extend it to my son. Keep him safe…Please.”

“I swear to you, Y/n.” He nodded, “I will protect him, as I would my own Kin.”

“Thank you.” She smiled,

Benjen offered his hand to her, and she softly slid it into his own. He kissed her knuckles, allowing his lips to linger longer than they should have, and when he pulled away, he whispered words he had long wished to ask. “Y/n…”

“Yes, Benjen?”

“Forgive me, but I must-”

“Yes?”

“Your sons, Adar and Robar… your twins?” He asked, “They were born… not long after the tourney of Harrenhall?”

“Such a question is best left unanswered.” She softly smiled, “Be safe, Benjen.”

“And yourself, Y/n,” he nodded as Waymar returned, so Benjen once more mounted his horse, “Come along, son, long way to the wall.” He nodded, leading the young Royce boy away from the castle, and himself away from remaining with Y/n.
