Also ☝️ people are not nearly this critical towards fanart or edits as they are with fanfics and like i get that this comparison is a little weak bc they’re vastly different mediums that serve different purposes but the Main thing they have in common within the context of fandom spaces is that they’re both forms of creative expression inspired by the media they’re directly referencing. and i feel like the style of fanfiction writing has, by this point, already become its own distinctive Thing so for everyone to refuse to take it seriously bc it’s not as good as it could’ve been is a little unfair to be entirely honest with you

#zoe yaps ᝰ.ᐟ #i don’t remember where it is but i remember seeing this piece about fanfic writing #and how a lot of it reads like a very descriptive screenplay but there’s also this subtle technique to it that is very unique #it was something about the perspectives of the characters i think i don’t remember #but it was a nice dissection about fic writing and how it’s evolved over the years and all that #i think once ppl stop expecting shakespearean levels of writing in a 2k word fic abt geto tearing a new one into gojo then they’ll be fine

i feel like a lot of the conversation around the quality of fanfic writing always starts to lean into some very unfairly critical discussions online regardless of how well-intentioned someone is when they point it out. the statements “let people write however they want, it’s just fanfiction” and “fanfic authors are not immune to criticism about their writing style” can both coexist but i hate when this conversation happens on a post that blows up (especially on twitter) bc then you start to see people completely hating on very harmless styles of writing and you also see fic authors trying so hard to insist fanfics are not serious that it’s almost insulting to the craft as a whole

my two cents on this is that yes it’s within your rights to share critical feedback online bc it Can often be a good way for writers seeing it to improve on their own writing skills, but when you’re having a laugh about the overuse of epithets in gay fanfiction under a viral tweet it just starts to feel very mean-spirited #tbh…. fanfic authors can definitely do better to avoid overusing repetitive/flowery language in their works but i would also argue that the conversations being had under these viral posts about how “corny” fanfic writing is are always more disrespectful and demeaning than they are constructive

#zoe yaps ᝰ.ᐟ #im not immune to this criticism either like i never claimed to be a good fic writer bc frankly i dont read enough to polish my writing skill #and that’s an entirely unrelated issue im trying to fix . However i do still dislike seeing viral tweets abt this all the time #like u can’t be surprised that fanfic authors are getting defensive abt posts like this when half the ppl sharing their own opinions #+ on the matter don’t even Attempt doing their own writing and a lot of it gets to be very nitpicky #using “the taller/older/blonde man” instead of just pronouns or a Name is probably the most tame example of “corny writing” in fics #i wouldn’t even call it purple prose bc it’s literally such a simple descriptor and it’s helpful for avoiding repetition #like u guys r genuinely just being haters sorry!#that said i also wouldn’t call this discourse pseudo intellectualism bc some of the points being raised r valid #but like everyone talks abt this stuff in such bad faith that i can’t even bring myself to agree with them bc those posts always snowball #+ into making fun of fic authors online for experimenting with their usual style of prose #and then you have random people popping up under those threads sharing screenshots of fics they read and laughing abt how bad the prose was #just messy as hell
