Park Cannon is one of just four openly LGBTQ Black officials in state legislatures nationwide. Here, she tells Colorlines about her unorthodox path to becoming a state representative, the homophobia she faced during the election and some of the things that inspired her along the way.
Over 60 comic characters will grace the big screen this year. They’ll be white, black, Asian, male and female but there’s one you won’t see: an LGBTQ superhero.

“If you don’t see femmes as queers, it’s because you choose to not see us. You are invested in our erasure. We are here. We have always been here.”
Femme Space is a photo project exploring queer femme identity and reclamation of space. Queer femmes of all genders choose locations and co-conspire with photographer, Amanda Arkansassy Harris to reclaim sites of marginalization, erasure and invisibility through portraiture. Femme Space exists to draw attention to the experiences of queer femmes and amplify our stories in art and media.

"I am interested in a version of masculinity that is more expansive, and more vulnerable, than the kind often represented in mainstream culture."
The Sports Equality Foundation is focused on providing empowerment and guidance to athletes, coaches and leaders who are coming out.
Just as every sports legend has someone in their past to whom they once turned for help — to build them up, to lend a hand, to train their bodies beyond what the average human can endure — starting today, out LGBT athletes and coaches will have a new resource to help level the playing field. The Sports Equality Foundation — aimed at providing support and encouragement to LGBT athletes, coaches and team leaders — launches today.
“Sports is an important key to unlocking hearts and minds in our shifting culture,” said board co-chair Kathleen Hatch, past president of NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, in a statement.

A billionaire philanthropist has donated $2 million to a university to establish a chair of transgender studies.
The position will be funded by American Jennifer Pritzker, who donated the money to the University of Victoria through her Tawani Foundation. No other position like it is believed to exist in global academia. Half of the money will be given to fund the chair position for the next five years, and the other half is to match other donations to the course.
The inaugural chair will be Aaron Devor, a sociology professor who has studied trans issues for over thirty years.
“Far too many trans and gender-nonconforming people still live in poverty and fear,” Dr Devor said in a statement. “As the inaugural chair, I will act as a resource locally and internationally for those needing information for their own research or for policy development, as well as building linkages between community-based and academic scholars working in transgender studies.”
Dr Devor founded the same university’s transgender archives, which were created in 2012. The archive aims to keep a historical record of trans history particularly of trans activists. The Tawani Foundation is a supporter of military history, and Ms Pritzker is out as trans and formerly an army lieutenant colonel.
“The chair in transgender studies sets [University of Victoria] apart,” The University of Victoria President Jamie Cassels said in a statement. “I am proud of our campus community’s commitment to diversity, as well as grateful to Dr Devor, Lieutenant Colonel Pritzker, the Tawani Foundation and all those who help us continually learn and grow in a welcoming environment that promotes the rights and affirms the dignity of all persons.”
A trans woman has been stabbed to death in Brasil, and another seriously injured.
Two cases, separate, but possibly rated crimes, took place on Sunday 17 January in the centre of Capão da Canoa, Brazil. Nathallya Figueiredo, 25, who had recently arrived form France, was found in her car with multiple stab wounds, and died en route to the hospital. A second case of a stabbing, of Avenida Atlântica, was stabbed in the chest and arm, and was taken to the Santa Luiza Hospital.
She remains in serious condition and police are investigating whether the two cases are linked.

The Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum (1901 Fort Pl., S.E.) features a display on the “emergence of the gay community” in D.C.
The display, part of its new exhibit Twelve Years That Shook and Shaped Washington:1963-1975, traces the gay community’s establishment in society, especially in D.C.public life. It makes mention of key turning points in gay D.C. history such as D.C becoming the first city to have its school board ban sexual orientation discrimination in 1972. Another important event mentioned is Mayor Washington signing off on D.C. legislation to prevent gay discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodation and bank credit.
The Washington Blade, originally titled “The Gay Blade,” is featured in the display, with a newspaper distribution box and copies of the very first issue of the Blade on display.
The GOP presidential candidate lays out his plan to end same-sex marriage.
Senator Marco Rubio, one of many terrifying GOP presidential candidates, explained at length on Meet the Press that if he were elected president, he would find a way to reverse the SCOTUS decision that legalized marriage equality. He’s got it all planned out.
“I don’t believe any case law is settled law,” he said. “Any future Supreme Court can change it. And ultimately, I will appoint Supreme Court justices that will interpret the Constitution as originally constructed.”
While he declined to endorse a constitutional amendment that would overturn Obergefell (“that would be conceding that the current Constitution is somehow wrong and needs to be fixed”), Rubio said each state should be allowed its own definition of marriage.
“If you want to change the definition of marriage, then you need to go to state legislatures and get them to change it,” he said. “Because states have always defined marriage. And that’s why some people get married in Las Vegas by an Elvis impersonator.”
I am downright TERRIFIED of what will happen if any of these GOP candidates is elected. I want to believe it’s impossible, but you really never know.
The pronoun "he" refers to males and "she" to females. But some people are neither - and in the US an increasing number are choosing different pronouns.
For this year's transgender awareness week I wanted to write about something that the transgender community and its allies are often afraid to discuss. Those who want to drive transgender people into

Both sides of the debate are digging in their heels, with supporters of the nondiscrimination ordinance demanding 'all or nothing,' while those opposed are equally entrenched.
