@citykept worries more than she should - more than even maeve sees point in worrying about herself for. everyone else in impossible city gets to be multiple people: acting as whatever they must be to help progress their efforts, and simply breathing when off duty, yet scientist cannot claim she believes elizabeth to ever allow herself to not be doctor weir. no matter what weir does, how others may plead with her to rest, there is no turning off being their leader. ( yet, all the same, there is no denying how much maeve cares for elizabeth outside of that. )

❝ do you ever sleep? ❞ words escape with little judgement, simply dry with the simple observation. news was always going to reach her - it will reach everyone, considering how few there are in such confined space - but perhaps it had been naive to hope it would wait until sun above their ocean home had risen again. so much for hoping for a few more hours to fully work out item at hand before life was sure to buzz through familiar halls again.

then again, when is there ever enough time? ❝ I worked it out. I mean, I think I worked it out. something about the patterns was bugging me, so I thought I’d come and work when it was quiet. ❞

truly, elizabeth should not need to be involved in everything that transpires in the city; her people are beyond competent ( more competent than she when it comes to such things as this: elizabeth is no scientist ). they know their jobs and they do not require the constant supervision that she always craves offering them. it is surely scarcely her fault if their work is far more interesting than her own. besides, elizabeth always reminds herself: her own task, above all others, is to ensure their well-being. that justifies — that necessitates — a little worry.

❛ pot calling the kettle black? ❜ her suggestion carries as little judgement as maeve’s own accusation. of everyone in the expedition, rife with devoted scientists all too prone to finding themselves caught up in their work, maeve and elizabeth are surely by far the worst offenders when it comes to their late-night efforts.

there’s something in the come and work when it was quiet that sends a stab of guilt through elizabeth’s chest. she knows better, knows maeve does not mean to accuse her of interrupting her work. it’s not the first time, however, that she has felt herself in the way. with eyebrow raised, she jokes, ❛ but if that’s a gentle cue that I’m in the way and ought to get out of your hair... you know you’re allowed to kick me out. ❜ she makes no effort to leave, however, instead pulling up a chair to the table over which maeve works. ❛ otherwise, tell me about it. it has to be more interesting than the reports the ioa wants. ❜

“ wasn’t planning to, but now that you mention it. yeah, i only take the best. ” it wasn’t so much as a sense for this sort of thing, but an understanding. it took a while to understand someone, people had the habit of surprising you, of showing their true colors at the last moment: of shining when they’ve been given a chance. there wasn’t a need for that with elizabeth, who had stubbornly seen what he tried hard to hide, sharp-eyed, not even seeing the words on the psychic paper fooled her. “ doctor weir. ”

the solemn way he said her name was gone the next instant. “ that’s gonna be confusing. doctor and doctor, you’ve got no idea. every time i’ve run into myself i ended up with a migraine, so we need something. weir? elizabeth? lizzie? liz? ” he’ll figure it out, or he’ll change his name, one or the other.

pursing his lips, he waits a beat for the trouble to pop up. happy that it wasn’t lying in wait for two fools to come in, he starts walking further into the building. “ could be nothing. big town-wide holiday, everyone is in the next town getting smashed so no one was worried about locking the doors or… the documents. ” he says grabbing a pile. like outside, the place was spotless. someone went to all the trouble of getting the place gleaming before making everyone disappear. “ so yeah, something is very wrong. you sure you want to stay? ”

the grimace at the nicknames is evidence enough of her sentiments. there’ve been plenty who sought to use them, and rarely from endearment. strange, how nicknames can prove so utterly condescending. this time, at least, she does not hold it against him. ❛ lizzy is what my mother always calls me — so don’t you dare. ❜ oh, how she hates it, and always has. ❛ elizabeth is fine. and sometime, you’re telling me how on earth you meet yourself. ❜ space and time, she reminds herself, which means that all continuity of time as she understands it no longer applies, and the impossible becomes possible.

she sets it aside, however, quirking an eyebrow at him. ❛ this is where you tell me it’s dangerous and I should get out while I can, is it? ❜ she can’t deny — to herself — the churning anxiety that’s settled into her gut at being so very far from home, so very far from all she’s ever known, with her understanding of the universe lying shattered at her feet. yet it cannot quite overcome the curiosity that has always driven her, or the restless seeking for something else, something greater, a sense of belonging that has always eluded her. ❛ I can handle myself. besides, I hate leaving a mystery unsolved. ❜

she does not push past him in the dimness of the room, does not insist that she lead the way or otherwise attempt to take control of the situation. she’s fully aware of her own limitations, her own ignorance. and she’s been reckless enough today in her prickliness. instead, she merely turns her palm up, a gesture of suggestion that he continue on.

the diplomat indeed. it has never settled quite right, never become merely a state of accepted reality, the way her name is known. it’s slightly different here, of course, upon a ship currently responsible for her transport, yet still.... ❛ nothing so interesting as reading your file. ❜ most of the time, at least.

the company is welcome - it is not as though maeve will ever be using this time to sleep as she also should. when did she last sleep properly? not as a child, whose nights were rocked by constant nightmares. and now, freshly returned from various hells, maeve cannot imagine herself as ever capable of true rest again ( she is undeserving of it, the luxury of closing her eyes without the hells her brain unleashes on her ). fingers still carefully trail on harp’s strings, barely applying enough pressure for even a ghost of a tune to escape.

❝ of course you’re welcome. you know that. ❞ sooner or later, trouble always comes. it is the law of the universe: nothing may be allowed to sit still, to simply exist, for too long. ❝ I won’t torture you with my practicing though. ❞ it is a little thing - maintained since childhood - never truly a passion, yet all the same a coming mechanism through one too overwhelming events. her birth mother was a musician after all && who is maeve to turn down the few links she has to rare reminders of where her very blood came from? mary taught her to only ever exel at the thing she chose to work on, and it is a hard thing to judge if she has any true talent when it comes to otherwise harmless hobby.

instead though, seat is pushed a little back, relaxing more into it as hand lightly gestures to any of the available spots in room. ❝ please, at least make yourself comfortable. I’d hate for word to get out I’m a terrible host. how are you feeling? other than the whole blood being replaced by coffee thing. ❞

a nagging sense remains that she shouldn’t be here, that she ought to seek solace instead in the depths of the city as she had on so many other restless nights. for all the time they’ve been here, there’s plenty not yet explored, and plenty more that, though seen by human eyes, still lingers, waiting for someone to have the time and interest to investigate further. she could occupy herself easily, without disturbing any of those beneath her care. that maeve does not seem to care and that troubling her has become all too frequent an occurrence, verging closer to habit than it ought, offer little balm for the guilt.

despite, however, elizabeth accepts the offer to sit, for all her posture refuses to relax. ❛ you don’t need to stop on my account — I highly doubt anyone would call it torturous. unlike my violin practicing as a child. ❜ at least the piano had been less squeaky, less screechy, no matter how plodding the notes nor erratic the rhythm. elizabeth would have conceded that she was not made for music long before her mother had been willing to accept the reality. ❛ or maybe I’ve just built up a thick skin, after that particular hell. ❜ she offers a smile, a promise that she means the words as a joke.

yet she sighs, shakes her head. ❛ is there anything to feel other than coffee blood? ❜ the fatigue it leaves behind her eyes, the heartbeat that sometimes scarcely feels real to her, the nervous jitteriness. but of course there is more, and they both know it. coffee may physical affect her, yet it does nothing to affect her emotions, the weight of their reality.

“ americans, americans. you just can’t deal with not being the center of the universe. why not me? why him. the aliens in your movies only invade the united states and you call it a world invasion, ever considered we are not that interested in your fair country? ” he said, comfortably aware of the card he choose to reveal, moving past his desire to annoy her as much as possible by keeping up his game. the quicker he got her to trust him, or at least stop thinking he was a complete nut job, the quicker he’d get the answers he was looking for.

maybe saying he is an alien… was not the best strategy. oh well, the truth was easier to bend than a lie. “ why this time? might be because he is making a speech soon and all eyes will be on him. or maybe cause if a british guy starts acting weird everyone just thinks that’s how they are. ” one of the reasons why he had kept his accent from the start.

the british: voted most likely to be considered eccentric.

“ better? by the way, your walls? lots of stuff growing in here, ” he says giving it a little tap, “ i’d visit your doctor. ”

it slips her notice, even she so trained to catch the nuances of language, to read between the lines and understand that at which another merely hints. or, perhaps, it is better to say that something strikes her as odd in the phrasing, in the sudden discussion of science fiction, but such things are so far from the realm of her reality that she instead interprets ‘we’ as referring to non-americans. though she scowls, she amends, ❛ very well... why not the nigerian president, or that of germany. or, quite frankly, any of the other politicians and diplomats present in this building today. ❜ yes, americans are all too capable of being egocentric and america-centric, yet that had been so very far from her intent.

she struggles to keep her eyes from narrowing, suspicion tamped down to previous levels, though his fixation upon the prime minister was troubling, at best. ❛ no, not better. what does mold have to do with the prime minister’s behavior — or his speech? ❜ not that giving a speech while smelling terribly was a desirable outcome, but... well, he’d scarcely be the first, would he? her head’s begun to ache with the strain from disorientation — of too many pieces laid out before her, none of which made sense and most of which remained shadowed.

so much for her long trip out, for restless hours pacing the confines of tiny room hands clasped before her as she thought, considering all possibilities and attempting, as best she could, to get ahead of whatever she might find waiting for her. finding her job completed for her was not one of the eventualities elizabeth had considered. though she quirks an eyebrow at him, her voice contains no true irritation — or accusation — when she remarks, ❛ you know, at a certain point, even the most earnest of humility starts to sound like bragging. as someone well-versed in working off my own notes, I think I know better than most that it’s never that simple. ❜

she shakes her head. ❛ at this point, you might just make me obsolete. ❜ though it’s a joke, still she must consider herself fortunate, she supposes, that in the end there are few starfleet captains quite like him. elsewise, she might just find herself truly out of a career. ❛ is there anything left for me to do here, or should I just turn right around and go home, considering it a job well done even though I did absolutely nothing? ❜
