"I know you." Having ever the way with words, he comes suddenly and bluntly, apropos of nothing. Only he knows that he's been looking at her, only he knows that he's been trying to place her. "You're Hugh's friend." (Whether this is true, of course, is of little consequence. He's seen the two of them together, so whether they're friends or friendly doesn't matter.)

"Is it bad?" Ray drummed his fingers on the table, not looking directly at Maeve. "It's bad, isn't it?"

they're the only two bodies in an otherwise empty kitchen ; neither wearing any sort of chef's uniform . neither meant to be here . it's not the first time he's run into another thief ( or whatever she is ) while on a job , but what really catches eliot's attention is that this one seems ... familiar , somehow .

" we met before ? " asks the hitter , eyes darting around the room , identifying his exits . competition is rarely a good thing . " i feel like i've seen your face somewhere . "

Accepting her offered hand, Jim smiles. It's tight around the edges; polite, but clearly strained. He politely excuses himself from his tablemates, two ambassadors who have spent the evening droning on about trade agreements the federation is meant to oversee. Boring but completely manageable except for their constant frown and snide remarks.

His politeness, forced as it is, has limits.

"Thank you," Jim breathes, careful to still keep his voice low, as they walk to the middle of the dance floor. He lets himself deflate, shoulders dropping, as he pulls at the collar of the green dress uniform. "Any longer and I think we'd have a red alert on our hands."

wealthy widows were always a point of gossip. the younger and prettier they were, the fewer the children, the more likely tongues were to wag. and this present lady was no exception... dwight himself was not above a curious glance her way when she entered the drawing room. it was rare enough that he - a penniless doctor with vanishingly few wealthy patients - was invited to any gathering of the local elite. as such, he could not then pretend to be wholly indifferent to the intrigues that such an evening promised...

he offered a polite nod in greeting when their hostess made an introduction. " i shall take the fact that we've not yet had occasion to meet as a blessing. " often enough he first met his neighbors when called to attend some ill or another. " being new to the district myself, i confess i much prefer this method of forming an acquaintance, " he added with a smile.

a finger came to point towards the brunette, "glad to hear that." the ongoing prank war between reid and morgan had meant more than a couple of the members of the bau had been caught on the crossfire –– at least this way, he could hope that maeve wasn't going to be one of them. regardless of how quietly humorous he might have found them from time to time. "i find that karaoke is more of a spectator sport." at least, for him. he'd seen garcia work her way around a mic enough times to know that he would only pail in comparison, if he ever had the desire to get up front and belt out a tune. "you know, that kid's mind doesn't surprise me any more. i'm sure he's got some things to trot out. probably about the history of karaoke as opposed to the songs, but even that's quite impressive." the agent's memory always had been. "sometimes it's just nice for the team to be together without chasing after an unsub."

head tilted slightly as she listened to maeve. perhaps the two were more alike than she'd considered they were to begin with. she might not have been in and out of the foster system in that way, but that was only because they'd managed to avoid it. perhaps it would have provided her with some more stability –– perhaps not. "look at you now though. i bet kid-maeve wouldn't believe you if you told her everything that she has in front of her. it might not all be smooth sailing, but look at what you've achieved." that had to be something, didn't it? you couldn't count life in the number of tragedies you faced –– else you'd be counting forever. "you ever take your own advice on board? that you're just you?"
