“why? why what?” calliope frowned momentarily. “why i’m searching for them? or why i can’t stop searching?” she just couldn’t bring herself to. it’s the only reason she was even. she felt as though her giving up now would just defeat the purpose of coming here, and then what purpose would she have now that she was here? “i just can’t, rome. they meant a lot to me, and well ... i just want to see them again, or just ... find out if they’re even alive or not.”

        Fingers snap, a quarter bounces off the side of the shot glace, ricochets against the table. Something about lazy bar games sure is depressing. Jimmy seals his sigh with the lip of his beer bottle. “–You ever think about getting a job?” he suddenly wonders aloud, looking to Calliope. “I mean, we’ve got forever. The hell do you do with all that time? …Guess I could finally finish Lord of the Rings,” he gives her a crooked smile. “The movies.” Not the books. Never the books.

“i have thought about it. numerous times. i just don’t know where i’d fit in, you know? but i do have some more searching to do. if i’m going to be stuck here .. for now anyway? i might as well try fitting in as much as i can. i don’t really need the money, but extra cash isn’t bad at all, isn’t it?” she smiled at the man. “have you? the question makes me think that you have thought about it.”

“This town’s got a way of sucking people in,” Rowan admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. He wasn’t sure what attracted people to Faulk Hollow - he still wasn’t sure why he loved it there so much. The town always seemed like a big mix of all sorts of people, types he would’ve never guessed would end up there. “Old newspaper clippings? Geez, I guess I didn’t think of that. I mostly just read the obitz, to be honest. Everything else…well, big news stories just pop up as notifications on my phone now.”

“I haven’t been here that long, but I believe you on that.” Calliope laughed, playfully rolling her eyes before she spoke. “Current news posts can’t help me. Not right now, anyway.” She shrugged her shoulders, a smile still on her face. “What brought you to Faulk Hallow anyway?”

I’m on my way home, so you’re welcome to come over if you’d like,” she offered. If they were going to catch up, she preferred to do so someplace more private. 

“i’d really like that. whenever you have some spare time just let me know, yeah?” smiling, calliope chewed at her bottom lip after, pondering on sylvia’s offer. “yeah, sure. of course. why not?” she could resume looking for her maker another day. “how far are you from here?”

“Well I assumed that much,” Mia chuckled, it was a sure bet there’d be books at the library. “It’s not strange, there’s something appealing about the sensory experience of a real book. But you gotta keep up with the times, you know? Else you’ll be left behind to grow old in a hutch somewhere,” she lamented, she was old enough that she was very aware of the dangers of falling behind.

Calliope managed a laugh. “I suppose you’re right. I mean, I do have an iPad, and there are some books on there but ..” She shrugged. “Maybe I’ll warm up to technology and their many advances eventually.”

“Well, I’m sure you’ll be able to find your way around, but getting used to everyone… that’s a different matter entirely.” Mia chuckled, their town was a pretty eclectic bunch, just when you thought you knew what to expect, someone did something… unexpected. “Brand new, practically! And what are you hoping to find at the library, if you don’t mind me asking?” She was always curious, prying into things that weren’t her business. “Nice to meet you, I’m Mia.”

Calliope always had a way of talking too much. Sure, she didn’t go around telling everyone her business, but she was still talkative. “Books.” Calliope laughed. “I’m an oldie, I am not into the kindles and PDFs they call books these days. I rather feeling the actual book in my hand, smelling the paper.” Calliope giggled and wrinkled her nose. “Call me strange, but it’s mostly just that.”

“No problem! Don’t spread it around, but I actually kind of like showing people the town. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t where I grew up or anything, but it still feels like home. I like showing it off.” His feet hit the sidewalk one after another, and for a second he thought about how strange it was that he loved Faulk Hollow so much. It wasn’t the type of place he imagined he’d end up in. “Whatcha headed to the library for? Honestly, I didn’t even know people still use libraries.”

“Noted. It’ll be our little secret then.” She watched him as he spoke, waiting so she could respond to him. “Yeah?” She glanced around their surroundings before she was looking at him again. “I’ve been liking it so far, but I have yet to see everything. Maybe that’ll change, maybe i’ll like it even more.” She laughed a little, shaking her head. “What can I say? I love books. Libraries have books. Plus, there’s where you can mostly find old newspaper clippings and stuff like that. I like reading those.” And honestly, maybe she could read something about the person she was looking for.
