The Open Sea Air: [Reggie & Ariel]
cleancupmovedown:
The hatter inhaled deeply as Ariel kissed him. A warm sensation settling in his stomach as his eyes fluttered shut. She would always give him these feelings. Each kiss they shared felt like their first, reminded him of their first, reminded him of how he felt the first time he was able to actually kiss her.
He pined for her for so long, watched her with others just as she undoubtedly watched him. Was that selfish of him to think? That when he was kissing blonde after blonde, the redhead was pining for him?
“If you still wish to marry me,” There wasn’t anything else he wished for more. Every candle on his unbirthday cake contained that wish. Every dandelion he blew to the breeze. Every coin he tossed into a well. Every wish bone.
He loosened his hold on the mermaid and lowered himself to one knee, the sand dirtying his pant leg as he shifted down into a comfortable position.
“I’m caught a little unprepared,” He blushed and held onto Ariel’s left hand, thumb idly caressing her ring finger. “I will always believe you will deserve better than any way I could ever ask you,
He was stalling. The hammering of his heart against his ribs distracting him as he rambled on.
“I mean, it will never be like the way it was in the pub. All of our friends near. That love, support, the shock.” He snorted a short laugh. “I’ll never forget the surprise on everyone’s faces. The love on yours…”
Reginald paused and dropped his gaze to her slender finger and chewed on his lower lip in thought.
“But at least this time, I can promise that I’ll never leave you again. I’ll make sure no one hurts you again. I promise I’ll never let you cry without embracing you. I’ll cook your favorite meals, bring home your favorite flowers, take you wherever you want to go.”
He leaned forward and pressed a kiss to her finger, pressing his forehead to the back of her hand.
“I promise I will always be yours, always loyal, always loving, always gentle. I promise to love you until the end of time and then even beyond that.”
“I promise all this and more. Marry me? I’ll give you all this even if you say no, but you deserve a proper proposal.”
Another kiss to her finger before his eyes met hers again.
“Princess Ariel of Atlantica, will you marry me?”
Ariel stared at Reginald with wide, surprised eyes as he knelt down before her. Her heart began to race in her chest; thumping wildly in her ears as she searched for words - tried to listen to each and everything he murmured to her. Reginald. Her Hatter.
He wouldn’t leave.
Tears sprung to life as realization began to dawn on Ariel. No matter what the hurdle had been, no matter the challenge or the heartache - he had always been there. Even if he hadn’t realized it. Even in the time that he was gone - he hadn’t really left Ariel.
As he lifted to gaze to hers, Ariel slowly sunk to her knees and moved her hands to his cheeks gently. A smile grew on her lips as she slowly began to nod.
“Of course, Reggie - yes!”
It was she who felt he deserved more - deserved more love, more tenderness, more care - but she knew she would devote herself to giving him all and more.
“Yes!” She repeated. “I love you. I’ve always loved you. Always. I-I never stopped. I never…” gave up hope. “I give you all of myself. All that I am.
Will you take me?”
@cleancupmovedown
Reginald couldn’t help but laugh softly, blinking a few stubborn tears from his eyes, and turning his lips into her hands to brush soft kisses against her skin.
“My love,” he chuckled. “I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t ache for you.”
Every breath she had, every beat of her heart, every whisper... He wanted to be there for them all. The Hatter was a fool, mad, and ridiculous and tens of thousands of other less kind words for hurting her and leaving her.
But when the worlds around him fell and he was left alone, Ariel was always there, holding out her hand and radiating warmth and light.
Another kiss to her palm and he took her hand in his, and mimed placing a ring upon her digit. He needed to find her a ring. Something proper, something worthy of her.Something she would want to show off in glee and love and admiration.
“I love you,” He whispered. “I love you until the sun burns down and I’ll love you until all the stars in the sky are gone.”

Reginald laced his arms around the small of her back, keeping the redhead close to himself as he placed his chin on top of her head and hummed in thought.
“I do enjoy days on the beach, I love swimming against the waves and riding them back to shore. But the shop is my home, my space. If there was a way to lift it from its foundations and carry it with us, I would.” He sighed.
“Lavender,” he answered softly, breathing in the smell of his love once again. She didn’t smell of the purple flower, she smelled of sea salt, mint, and vanilla. A combination that made his heart swell and head spin with love.
“I don’t think much at all, too many dark roads I can take. I like to read you stories when you’re asleep, however.” A smile blossomed over his lips.
“I’m not sure there was a time when I didnt love you.”
The hatter took his chin away from the soft red hair and laughed at the thought of telling his younger self any kind of news from the future.
“I wouldnt tell myself anything. Well,” he rethought their previous adventures. “I would tell myself not to leave you alone so much.” He frowned at himself. “I can think of two times I wouldnt leave you alone,” his expression soured for just a moment. Regret and hate and fear swirling in his mind as memories played just behind his eyes.
“But you.. oh, you. I would tell you that you would be happy soon. To just hold on a little longer, to not give up.”
The madman brushed his lips delicately over Ariel’s before laughing again.
“Unless you had given up when you decided to be with me! Marry me, forgive me, stay with me. The whole thing might seem mad to your younger self!”
“Ariel,” he cooed, a certain seriousness dipping from his words. “Will you still marry me?”
@arielinthegrotto
Ariel closed her eyes as Reggie held her tightly against him. Her fingers trailed over his back carefully, feeling the soft fabric of his shirt as it billowed in ocean’s breeze. The warmth from his body wrapped around her as she listened to his soft hum. The simple scent of him - of home - was comforting.
And as he spoke, Ariel could feel her heart fluttering against her chest. Reginald had always had a way of making her breathless … of surprising her in how much he loved her. And as he pulled away just enough to look at her and kiss her, Ariel watched him with a warm smile.
He was beautiful. Perfect with all of his imperfections. The curls of his white strands of hair falling into his face. The glimmer in his eyes as he spoke. The curl of his smile as he said her name. Ariel brushed a strand of his hair from his eyes carefully.
Perhaps Ariel of the past would be thrilled to know of her future. Perhaps she would have heeded Reggie’s affirmations of never giving up. She knew that she wouldn’t have - not if it meant having Reggie in the future. Of being there - together. My past me doesn’t deserve you… She thought to herself. I don’t deserve you, Reggie. You are… my everything.
“Will you still marry me?” His words brought Ariel back to the sea - to the warmth of his arms. She tilted her eyes upwards, catching his. Her heart was pounding rapidly in her chest as she started to smile more.
She pushed herself up onto her toes, pressing her lips against his. Only as she pulled away just enough to catch her breath, she nodded. “If you still wish to marry me… yes, Reggie. Yes.”

Violet Wonderland
How deep is this rabbit hole, Alice? You swore you’d never fall, Only observe. Who would bat an eyelash If the wind caught in your skirt? How filthy shall you be When you crash into the dirt? The world has a strange way of working. Did you hear the blood rush? But wherever did it go? My face, my heart, my crotch, or my soul? Close your eyes, and feel my voice Reverberate your skin. Don’t forget all the ways Humans know how to sin. Isn’t it strange how it all adds up on paper? I’ve always been good at math. But not geography, As in the map of your body, As in touch me with your words, Because the way my hands shake Unnerves me. Spin me around We’re all mad here, What madness And how sad, this Beginning. It’s ending. “Don’t Panic” Was tattooed across my tongue, It clicked, silver against bone. Wonderland, Wonderlust, In my body I trust, But in my heart I live, My bones are stiff, And my muscles are tense, See, This isn’t supposed to make sense.

“I’m glad your heart chose me as well, my love.” Once again the hatter leaned forwards and pressed his lips against hers.
“I’ll take you to the pond one day. I imagine you would like it., the water is deep and I’m sure you could explore it far greater than I ever could.”
“Could you?” Ariel asked as she gazed upon him with sparkling delight in her blue eyes. “I’d like to see it… I’d like to see your secret place.” A warmth spread across her cheeks as she turned her eyes down to the shells in his hands again. After all, Reginald knew so much about her - knew every crevasse of herself. And yet, even after all of this time - there were things, so many things - that neither of them knew about the other. Ariel knew Reggie often smelled of tea and mint; she knew how the skin of his back felt beneath her finger tips. She knew the soft hum he sung beside her ear late at night as he held her close. She knew his laughter, the crease of confusion and frustration over his brow. She knew his soft gasps of pleasure, the trembling of his hands during a nightmare. There were so many things Ariel knew and treasured - and yet, something so simple as a secret spot.
She took Reginald’s hand and drew her fingertip over the marks of his palm as she leaned into his shoulder. She would do anything to never leave his warm embrace; their gentle way of living.
“Thank you,” she whispered softly. For this. For us. For our second chance. For coming home. For coming back to me. But the rest of her words failed. Instead, Ariel tilted her chin and gazed up at him.
Thank you, Every inch of him froze, heat swelling through his chest as she touched his hand. A simple caress, that’s all. She held so much power over him, he realized it in this very moment. Ariel always had control over the Mad Hatter. She held his heart, his mind, and his soul.
Reginald didn’t deserve this princess. Not when he ran and disappeared and left her on her own like her other lovers. Shame. Such shame flooded his cheeks and the pit of his gut. The way the mermaid looked at him now caused so much pain in him, the reflection of the pain he had caused her.
The shells fell from his hands as the hatter reached his hands up to cup the red heads cheeks, pulling her face to face his, drawing their lips closer. Just as Reginald pressed his lips softly to hers, his right hand dropped to wrap around her waist, hand resting on the small of her back to bring their bodies closer.
She tasted like mint.
Breathing in her scent, the smell of vanilla and sea salt and just a touch of lavender. He broke the kiss, breath shaking just behind his lips, and pressed his forehead to hers, feeling her warmth as the wind brushed her hair against his cheeks.
How grateful he was. Had he mentioned that? How grateful he was to not have lost her in the time he had lost so much. When they had lost so much. Loved ones, friends, family… It seemed they were teetering on their own private island. But how lost he would be if he had lost her too. Would he exist at all if that happened?
His thumb brushed her cheek, eyes still closed as he reached his lips down to kiss the space just between her brows, then rolled his forehead back up to connect with her.
“Is there anything you want to ask me, Ariel? You can. Anything at all, I’m yours.” He whispered breathlessly.
Ariel was startled when Reginald spilled the shells from his hands onto the sand by their feet, only to feel his lips gently brush over hers. The wonderful, familiar scent and feel of him surrounded her, enveloping her into a blanket of warmth and love. As she closed her eyes and lifted her hands to his shoulders, she felt his own hands pulling her closer - holding her. How long had it been since he had done so? When had the last time been that they had been so close? Behind her closed lids, a small stirring of happy tears began to fill her eyes.
Home. She was home. He was here - and here to stay.
As he pressed his forehead against hers, Ariel smiled - truly smiled. The wind swirled around them, causing Ariel to take a step more against him. He was warm and smelled so heavenly.
I’m yours. Ariel’s heart nearly burst at the words. She barely knew where to begin - what to say - what to say. Her fingers slid to the ends of his hair, twirling a small strand as she smiled. He had to know she was his too - that she had always been his. No one in her past had ever mattered - nothing compared to the love she felt for him.
Lifting herself on her toes, she tilted her chin and pressed a soft kiss against his lips again.
“Do you know… I will always be yours?” She whispered gently against his cheek. Ariel slid her fingers down along the tops of his shoulders, pausing only to rest upon his chest. She opened her eyes and gazed at him.
“Why do you love me so?”
The blue of his eyes met with Ariel’s. Her’s were the color of the sea, his the reflection of the flowers the bloomed over Wonderland’s fields. Would their children have some color mixed between the two?
“I hope you will always be mine,” Reginald replied, brushing a lock of red hair between Ariel’s ear. “But I can’t imagine a princess like you forgiving a fool like me for all the mad mistakes I’ll surely make in our lifetime.”
He smiled to himself. What would Ariel think when he brought home the strange creatures of Wonderland? When he would try and saddle an ostrich and ride it through the fields of wherever their home lay? What if they did have children, and he taught them not to fear anything, only for Ariel to find her child and its father teetering on the edge of injury or failure?
A chuckle escaped from his lips, smile slowly spreading up freckled cheeks until it overtook the entirety of Reginald’s face, leaving creases on his forehead.
“I love you so, because I’m free with you. When we braided each other’s hair, I felt nothing but peace even in the rowdy tavern all our friends gathered in.
“I love you so because even when one of us disappears, we can find each other and the marks of our pasts are still bare for us to see. All of our memories, kisses, touches. I never had that with Alice.”
The hatter looked down for a moment, searching inside himself for an answer he already knew.
He had thought for so long that Alice was for him, created to be his equal until the end of time. He had seen it many times before with his mirror twins and even Jervis. But it seemed somewhere along the way, the madman broke his mold.
He could try in vain for so long to find an Alice who would stay, but it wouldn’t matter because he was not made for Alice. He was made for Ariel, and she, he hoped, was made for him.
Fitting together like two pieces of a puzzle.
He smiled at his love once more and pressed another kiss to her forehead.
“Anything else, my love?”
A very merry afternoon, friends.
I’m not sure how many of you are still reading this. But I wanted you all to know that Ariel is having a novel published soon that includes yours truly, which is titled Between the Sea and Stars.
This link will take you to the amazon page where you can purchase the novel either digitally or in paperback form. It’s up for pre-order right now and will be released on June 19, 2018.
I will also be releasing a novel titled Wandering in Wonderland in the Summer of 2019, the actual release date is still pending.
Both of the novels have plans for sequels but if you have enjoyed the writing we have entertained you with over the years, please consider supporting her and I in our projects.
Thank you and enjoy your tea~

His blue eyes stared into hers and he felt his heart flutter. Falling deeper into love with his beautiful mermaid over and over again, each time she looked towards him and held onto his arm. Reginald pressed a kiss to her lips and smiled when he pulled away.
“No, there aren’t mermaids in Wonderland, there aren’t really any bodies of water.” He stepped away from her grasp and walked deeper into the oncoming waves, bending at the waist and plucking rocks and broken shells from the sand and oncoming surf. “Well, there’s the lake,” He chuckled and gave the redhead a wink, hoping she would recall their previous adventures when she lost her voice.
“There’s also my secret spot. Have I taken you there yet? There’s a willow tree and a pond, I met a mermaid there once. Neither of us knew how she got there…” He mumbled to himself for a moment before righting himself and smiling back at his love. “’Syrena’ was her name. Do you know her? I recall her saying something about Jack…”
He shrugged and walked back towards Ariel, holding onto a tiny blue stone and a long abandoned curved shell.
“My world is filled with great nonsense. We have seen great nonsense, together and separate. A flying carpet? That voodoo magic after those two…” The hatter’s face grew dark at the memory. He wasn’t there to help her, and the thought still filled him with rage. “Oh!” He snapped himself back to a cheerful air. “Can we also not forget how your sister fell in love with my hare of a best friend?” He quirked a brow, questioning if the princess had thought that almost as ridiculous as he did. Though he missed those two greatly, and was happy for the love they had found.
“There’s the lake…” he mentioned. Ariel’s cheeks warmed at the memory of Hatter and herself at the lake he spoke of.
“Your secret spot?” She tilted her head and watched him as he continued to speak. He approached her with a tiny blue stone and a long, pink shell in his hands. “I don’t think I’ve ever been there.”
As she lifted herself up on her toes, she kissed his chin with a smile. “I suppose we and our friends have had quite a number of adventures… and love who their hearts choose.” With warmed cheeks, she smiled. “I’m glad my heart chose you.”
