I recently had the honor of speaking at the HR Conference Cruise for the third time.

The conference took place on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas cruise ship, which set sail from Port Cape Liberty, NJ and incorporated an overnight stay in Bermuda.

One of the worst things that can happen to a keynote speaker is a botched beginning to a keynote presentation. This is what happened when I conducted an opening keynote message at the 2015 Midwest Staffing Conference orchestrated by the Illinois Search & Staffing Association and the Wisconsin Association of Staffing Services. My presentation started strong, but then when I pressed the button on the remote clicker to advance to the first slide, nothing happened! I was mortified!

I stopped the presentation and looked at one of the conference organizers who was sitting in the front row and said something like, “the slides are not advancing! The laptop had frozen. Once the technology was fixed, I looked at the audience and said, “You know what, let’s just start over. Let’s pretend that didn’t happen.” We all shared a brief laugh and then I started from the top. The audience was great and the presentation went well.

Sometimes when bad things happen, we are tempted to believe that things are worse than they are. When I stopped the presentation, I immediately magnified it in my mind as something really bad. After all, I had practiced the opening of my presentation more than any other part to ensure that I nailed it. However, after quickly gaining a little perspective, I realized that it was not a big problem. In fact, as I said, things turned out great.

This reminds me of the words on the passenger side mirror of an automobile, “objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.” Wouldn’t it be nice if our problems came with a similar warning, “problems in your mind are smaller than what they appear.” If you have a problem, I encourage you to challenge its significance. Are you viewing it worse than it is? Are there remedies that you have not yet contemplated? Can things still turn out great?

At minimum, challenging the significance of your problems can serve to embolden you and spark the fortitude necessary to effectively address them. Go for it! Your problems are not greater than you are! © 2020 Clear Picture Leadership®. All rights reserved.
