NOOO dont feel bad :( i think vic as a character is flawed—but that's what makes her an interesting character to read. one of the comments mentioned "what is there to LIKE about her" but i think what draws me to vic is how driven she is between the lines. the pettiness and insecurity is driven by 1. being in an environment where to survive, you are systematically pitted against 1000s of women and have to be the best to keep doing what you love 2. wanting to hold on to something that was comforting (e.g carlos) because at this point in her life, he's one of the only things that has been stable. she's petty bc she feels like he's replacing her (and obvs that's going to bring up negative feelings internally ??)
none of us will ever be in uber competitive and pressure cooker environment she's in, and so we can only say "oh i wouldnt react like that" but would we actually? we can never know, and your portraying how someone might react, and taking your own creative liberties by doing so (which is obvs ur right as the author)
if she was a perfect character— one that was ok w carlos going off and doing things by himself or not filled w these inner doubts 1. that wouldn't really be an interesting character to read abt and 2. that wouldn't be very accurate ?? whether we like it or not, most of us on the inside are petty and mean and have negative feelings—but we only tend to criticize those feelings when we see other ppl exuding them.

oh my god, that's exactly it! thank you so much for taking your time to write this, i really appreciate it because i was really feeling a little down after the comments (i know it's silly but im a crybaby haha) but you totally nailed what i meant with her character! she's been competing since she was basically a child, with a dad that expects her to win all the time and someone very close to her who's actually super good... and in tennis you need a enormous amount of mental strength and her way of locking in was simply to believe that yes, she is the best, no doubts about it!
she is driven and she strives for the whole world, you can see in the way she reacts to loosing sometimes, her implied tantrums and etc. she is a difficult character, i intended for vic to be the opposite of what jannik presents himself as (so yes, she loves the attention, has that high performance athlete arrogance, isn't shy) and she's very flawed but i mean, look at those people on tour lol they aren't all super likable! and she's under a lot of pressure all the time (she cries with jan during wimbledon and like would dating someone just be that easy when your mind works like that?) which makes her decisions and actions seem messy...
but i do think she has some redeeming qualities? you can see she's fiercely loyal, even if she's "betraying" carlos and doesn't really like the media narrative he's still her main concern, and you can see she's a caring person like when she thinks about gifts for jannik or simply lets him in into her house, shows him one of her favorite movies! she's just very confused with how things around her are evolving and tbh it's not like vicjan are properly dating, so she hasn't shown him all of her good side yet 😭
