Are we dreaming?
Get to know Kamala Harris
Pushed a law that forces schools to turn undocumented students over to ICE, separating them from their parents and violating human rights
Laughed about putting parents in jail if their kids missed school, disproportionately harming single parent households, the poor, and families of color like this one, including homeless mothers
Her office refused to address what the Supreme Court calls “unconstitutionally overcrowded” prisons specifically to perpetuate the exploitation of the mass incarcerated for slave labor close to $1/hour(she later claimed she didn’t know her own lawyers argued this.
Declined to prosecute Steven Mnuchin after his bank’s predatory lending and foreclosure fraud broke the law “over a thousand” times and ruined the lives of thousands of homeowners, keeping him free to donate to her campaign and become Trump’s Treasury Secretary
Spent years jailing disproportionately black nonviolent cannabis users while opposing taking cannabis off DEA’s list of most dangerous substances and literally laughing at the idea of legalizing it multiple times, even as her Republican opponent ran to the left of her on the issue. She then tried to pander by admitting to smoking herself despite prosecuting others, but got her story all wrong, and even offended her own Jamaican family to the point they’ve disassociated with her
Used a technicality to stop the release of a man serving 27 years-to-life after being wrongfully convicted of possession of a knife under the three-strikes law she supported. When civil rights groups and nearly 100,000 petition signatures got him released after 14 years she took him back to court again for a crime he didn’t commit
Opposed reforming California’s three-strikes law, which is the only one in the country to impose life sentences for minor felonies and incarcerates black people at 12x the rate as white people, three different times, even while her Republican opponent supported reform
Appealed a judge ruling that the death penalty was unconstitutional and won on a technicality, resulting in continued executions
When evidence pointed towards a black defendant being framed by police, Harris avoided DNA testing to keep him on death row
Protected serial child rapists by refusing to prosecute in the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal
Lied about her state’s solitary confinement to block a suit by inmates, claiming there was none in California when there were about 6,400 victims of the practice, which is considered torture
Oversaw a state prosecutor falsifying a confession to get a life sentence and then destroyed the evidence, upheld a conviction secured by a prosecutor lying under oath, and oversaw the framing of another man
Opposed legislation that would require independent investigation of fatal police shootings despite criticism from many civil rights advocates including California’s Legislative Black Caucus
Opposed statewide implementation of police body cameras and ignored police brutality, multiple officers raping a teenager, and other officers sharing racist and homophobic messages, despite multiple requests from the public defender
Refused to hand over the names of police whose testimonies led to convictions despite the officers’ arrest records and past misconduct
Tried to deny a transgender inmate healthcare and endangered trans women by forcing them into mens prisons, leading to the rape and torture of at least one trans inmate
Stood by silently as $730 million was spent on moving inmates to for-profit private prisons
Delayed the confiscation of illegal firearms from dangerous people, then posed a “continued risk to public safety” by failing to implement changes state auditors recommended to fix this despite receiving $24 million specifically for this purpose
Voted two different times to block federal funding for abortions
Following the foreclosure fraud scandal she negotiated a deal great for banks but bad for the ruined homeowners, becoming one of Wall Street’s favorite candidates to fundraise for
Voted to give Trump increased military spending two different times.
Supports Trump escalating war in Syria
Co-sponsored the bill that let Trump impose sanctions on Iran which violated the nuclear deal and lead to the currently rising tensions
“Systematically violated defendants’ civil and constitutional rights” in crime lab scandal
Kept her Orange County DA office from being charged for running an unconstitutional jailhouse informant program they tried to cover up.
Oversaw San Francisco’s felony conviction rate rising from 52% to 67% in only 3 years
As part of her tough on crime approach she assigned senior prosecutors to misdemeanors like graffiti and vandalism, tripling the number of cases brought to trial
Mocks the activist call to “build more schools, less jails”
Supports collecting and keeping DNA from people even if they’ve not been charged with a crime
Defended the discriminatory practice of cash bail in court as recently as June 2016
Supports Israel’s right-wing government and cozies up to AIPAC, co-sponsored resolution against Obama in support of illegal settlements, does not support Palestinian rights, and calls BDS “anti-semitic”
Claimed to be unaware of sexual harassment and retaliation by her top aide over a 6 year span
Sponsored a bill allowing for prosecutors to seize profits before charges are even filed and opposed a bill that would reform civil asset forfeiture
Defended a prison’s religious discrimination in hiring policy
Opposed calls to tear down 700 miles of existing border wall/fence
Fought to limit amount of land indigenous tribes could place in trust and tried to take reservation land away from a tribe just to keep them from evicting a non-indigenous man who had lived there without paying rent for 24 years
Is a latecomer in endorsing Medicare for All and already appears to be backtracking on multiple aspects of it
Refused to review a case in which a pharmaceutical CEO killed his wife but made it look like a suicide after their son died under mysterious circumstances as well
Refused to prosecute PG&E for its massive gas pipeline explosion and now its consultants are running her campaign
Did not properly investigate the San Onofre scandal to protect her political allies.
Refused to investigate Herbalife’s exploitation and fraud, receiving donations from people connected to the corporation
Her associate operated a fake police force but somehow all charges were dismissed
Refuses to support AB5 to give gig workers like rideshare drivers basic employee rights (her brother-in-law & niece are high-up in Uber)
Opposed legalization of sex work, endangered sex workers, and oversaw people being charged for prostitution without even agreeing to sex
Endangered the public by supporting legislation that increased the homeless sex offender population 24x in 3 years, then appealed a court’s ruling that it was unconstitutional. Her Republican opponent ran to the left of her on this issue
Accepted thousands of dollars of campaign funds from Donald and Ivanka Trump multiple times
Accepts donations from prominent charter school pusher and billionaire Reed Hastings
Would like to see more nonwhite interracial wlw couples in fantasy, it’s really rare tbh but I would like to see it.
But if you do white/nonwhite can y’all at least be cognizant of internalized bias?
Such as
making them ambiguously brown
giving them no backstory
or giving them a very harsh backstory where all of their family is conveniently dead or something
giving them no one to befriend or talk to outside of the white character
making them quiet but strong
giving them no arc beyond the main character or any character growth
making them into a mammy type character where they spend more time babying the white girl than they do doing their own thing
having the white character berate them or think to themselves how “uncivilized” the brown one is even if it is to ~show how wrong they are later~
Your brown women should have a personality, a culture, a life, an entire existence outside of being the white girl’s girlfriend. Like I see so many of y’all wanting diversity points but still do this shit. I say it again, just because your story is wlw doesn’t mean you have written something progressive. Especially if you are still letting internalized biases go unchecked.
So, I'm irritated.
I'm sorry but this is lazy writing. This is a failure in the writing. If this is what they wanted to explore, if this is what they wanted to talk about then scenes indicating that Nick is a bad man because he's a man who rose through the ranks in Gilead should not have been left on the cutting room floor for SIX seasons.
The framing of Nick past season 2, maybe 3, shouldn't have been a romantic one; literally, we should not have been getting bodyguard kisses
and yearning phone calls
and strong imagery of him as heroic
or justified
In season 3, it shouldn't have been this
it should've remained a devastating discovery of what he did in the past instead of adding another dimension to their relationship and to June as a character.
Nick's love for June should not have been framed as this passionate force that is also a detriment to his own survival, as something that actually makes him do foolish things because it's in direct conflict with him actually being alive. It shouldn't have been this
It shouldn't have been this
It shouldn't have been this
because at this point, why is it important for June to learn that actually, there are no good men in Gilead, actually Nick was always a Nazi, actually he pulled one over on her, actually, the sex was just so good it clouded her judgment, what does stripping away all of Nick's complexity, all of the weight and nuance of her relationship to him actually do for the overall plot and story that they hadn't been doing before? How does this also not undermine June as a character? It just feels punitive to the viewers who were invested in Nick and Nick and June's story.
I was thinking about this quote
and how I find that shows rarely execute this in a way that I find appealing and this quote, which was supposed to indicate how much Damon loves Elena
but rang hollow because what this means is that Elena’s friends and family members became collateral damage
and then how the Cesare and Lucrezia dynamic is an example of the kinds of things anons tell me they like about ships like Delena and Klaroline and Darklina etc. that I just don’t see with them but that is epitomized by Cesare and Lucrezia
Like, Cesare doing anything for Lucrezia because Cesare promises to murder a husband who mistreats her
then he discovers that Giovanni was in fact ungallant
so he murders him even though that would only worsen the war between their families and he wasn’t sanctioned to murder him:
There were many reasons to kill Juan but the catalyst was when he threatened to murder Lucrezia’s child by throwing him off a balcony
Cesare saw Lucrezia’s face
and then
because Cesare’s mindset is
and he’s furious when Alfonso - her second husband - does not fight for her with equal passion and intensity
and then there’s the dialogue, these grand I-will-never-love-anyone-anything-not-a-person-not-God-more-than-I-love-you
and then you see them together and it’s like … uh yeah …
and everyone sees it
and it’s in everything, Cesare is protective of Lucrezia so he circles her
Lucrezia does not feel safe unless with Cesare so she moves to his side
and such strong emotions actually do come out in a rush of physicality
and I look at these other ships like if it’s not this high intensity energy then I don’t want it???
(soa anon) I am surprise, I expected you to pick Dwayne and Whitley. Now I have to ask, what do you like better about Maxine and Kyle?
It was a difficult choice but I chose Max and Kyle because they have that 30s/40s screwball comedy quality that I really enjoy, it's very His Girl Friday, it's a battle of equals
with magnetic attraction
that is very sexy
like he short circuits around her
and he makes her sweat
it's very mature but put up against their immature antics?
and there's genuine love there because they actually understand each on this level, like there's the two young, attractive, Black people in high-powered careers aspect about it but also that they see each other, which is also why they're able to goad each other the way that they do and I really like that. And they weren't perfect for sure but their imperfections are less glaring to me than Dwayne and Whitley's. Like, I love them and I always will and their chemistry is insane but Dwayne ain't shit, lmao.
Ships with chemistry which you dislike and why??
why: Master List
why: Master List
why: Master List
why: Master List
why: I revert back to being a kid if I watch Smallville and kid Zal shipped Chlark
why: https://zalrb.tumblr.com/post/186501284645/do-you-think-jeff-x-annie-from-community-was
why: because he was a fucking dumbass.
There are others where it's not dislike, I'm just indifferent or mildly annoyed or I disagree with what the narrative tries to push -- like Clana just annoys me really because I was a Chlark shipper, I don't dislike them. Even with Jess and Rory, it's less an active dislike and more like, I think people are dishonest about them and I think he served his purpose as what he was.
I'm bothered by the romanticisation of Ezria of course but I still can't get over how it manages to be one of the most boring forbidden romances of all time. It's unbelievable. How is it even possible to create a boring forbidden romance? They can't even deliver energy like SE moments where Stefan's trying to walk away but Elena's like I LOVE YOU! I'M NOT GIVING UP! and he's just defeated and struggling like, HOW could you DO this to me?!! Like, on the porch in 3x14 where he grabs her hands?
Well this is what I mean, it's always going to be terrible but it's not even fun, like the angst isn't angsting
The cute isn't cuteing
The sexy isn't sexying
The vibe isn't vibing
The forbidden-ness isn't forbiddening (and for this, I'm not even using ships that are necessarily "forbidden" ships but the framing of them being together but secluded plus the chemistry is more the vibes that they're supposed to have)
SO WHAT IS THE POINT.
#He didn’t fail
Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia – Black Panther (2018)
Coraline (2009) dir. Henry Selick
I love all the pandie content for me because I've preferred them for soo long so very happy to see your reactions haha
And I realize a big part of it for me is that Andie and Pacey are certainly angsty and they had their obstacles but it was a relationship characterized by hope and growth and both of them pushed the other to go through an evolution and for Pacey, they use the same aspects
that cause a devolution in PJo?
Like of course you can bring context into it, you can argue that Pacey and Andie weren’t in the last year of high school and he wasn’t confronted with what her future was going to be in stark contrast to what his was going to be (although I would say he most certainly was and her path was made clear from the outset)
plus as I keep mentioning they changed Pacey’s course
and you could say that Pacey was contending with feeling inferior to Dawson as well but even if I take that argument, the fact of the matter is that for me, they already covered the ground they covered in season 4
in season 2 and they did it with a more optimistic tilt (because even though the PJ argument is resolved in 4x02, it’s not a problem that’s resolved for the season, in fact it’s one of the biggest problems of the season, hence Promicide)
between two characters who had such a strong connection so that it wasn’t only Andie propping Pacey up
and it wasn’t only Pacey propping Andie up
it was mutually beneficial
and that’s what I prefer?
And for all the talk of maturity and growing up surrounding PJ, upon rewatching I actually found the most mature aspect of their relationship to be when Pacey takes responsibility for his feelings, apologizes to Joey and explains that none of it is her fault and they break up, which again isn’t an indictment on PJ but more a criticism of the writing that told me that Pacey and Joey grew up by not doing the same things DJ did
while making them do the same things DJ did in terms of the never-ending argument
and yeah it’s been stated that they did this to shove an unnecessary love triangle down the viewers’ throats (although I do think this is a retrospective argument in that, people have love triangle ennui now and are applying that to DC who was seminal in the teenage tv drama love triangle trope with this love triangle) but once again, I wouldn’t have to deal with this watching Pandie.
Which again isn’t to say I don’t love PJ moments, one my favourite PJ moments is after they break up and they get ready to go to the Worthington party and they lean in for a kiss before realizing they aren’t together anymore,
they have the second nature affection, constant contact, physically intimate thing that I do like watching because those details indicate their closeness
their first kiss with “Comfort” playing in the background brought back so many different childhood feelings
and I liked watching the physical cues in season 3 that indicated they were getting closer
but I just don’t find it enough when I feel like Pandie has the intimacy as well as stronger writing
so I just sat there with these opinions like
Oops I met Dan and Blair 😭
What's that The Fault in Our Stars quote? "I fell in love the way you fall asleep, slowly and then all at once" or something? I think that's what happened regarding feelings/attraction between Blair and Dan because Dan doesn't realize he likes her until Eric literally tells him
and I compared Blair's feelings/attraction to how Joey realized she liked/was attracted to Pacey
It’s interesting because I’m not sure if this parallel has been drawn or not because I can see it happening but I can also see it not being readily apparent but Dan and Blair are very PJo-esque and I bring that up, because like Joey with Pacey, I think that Blair just started relying on him more and more and trusting him more and more and seeing him as a first call more and more without being conscious of what exactly that meant so I think it happened along the way
But I think, unlike with Dan, there are moments where we see Blair actively realize and then shut down/ignore
Confession, but I prefer Pandie to PJo. And like you I find Andie cheating so wildly out of character and clearly just a ploy to make way for Pacey and Joey that I can easily dismiss it. PJo had great moments but I feel like Joey kept choosing people other than Pacey and running away over and over from her feelings and even right until the end seemed like she was considering Dawson (and also living with a guy in NYC of course). It frustrated me. I just love Andie and Pandie's dynamic more!
I also think just from what I remember of Joey and Pacey that they did a lot of retconning of what the Pandie relationship was to make Joey and Pacey more appealing, like I remember in Four To Tango when Joey is helping Pacey study and he said that he’s not feeling motivated because Andie (and Tamara) motivated him to study with sex and I’m like there is absolutely no evidence to suggest this in season 2 and it cheapens what Andie did for him. And then season 4 this happens (and this always bothered me)
when this literally happened
and it turns out that Pacey actually has an appetite for learning and education which Andie recognized
so I’m just like
The beauty of Andie and Pacey is that she didn’t coddle him and she didn’t buy into his self-pity but she railed against the education system that had written him off
before telling him as if it were a fact (and it was) that he was intelligent and that if he just tried then he wouldn’t have to be a self-fulfilling prophecy
and in turn, he was the shoulder she never really had, he was emotional comfort,
he was relentless in being there for her
and then they had such great banter and verbal sparring and what I love about their reconciliation after Jack’s poem is that they fight each other to apologize which keeps in line with their dynamic but their bickering is in service of to seeing the other’s perspective
and Pacey was confident with Andie to the point that Dawson drunkenly admits that he doesn’t like how confident he is because his role is to make Dawson feel better about his own life so I’m just kind of like, I get PJ, I really do but I think this rewatch I’ll be looking at them through the lens of what Pandie already was, which I don’t think I’ve done before.
