Validation and Verification
Verification, which establishes whether the device design described by the design output conforms to the requirements described by the design input.
Validation, which establishes whether the product produced in accordance to the design output, actually satisfies the user's’ needs.
Validation
“He returns to his bed to sit down as it is impossible for him to reach down and balance on his feet while standing. Carol sits and lurches his back over so his arms are close enough to the floor and where he can position the sock; he needs to position the sock right in front of his foot so he can make sure it goes in right. He ensures the heel is facing the ground and grasps both sides of the sock to spread an entry hole large enough for his foot. Carol proceeds to pull the sock around his foot, his coordination isn’t what it used to be; resulting in his toes catching multiple times upon entry. Carol finds it hard to get a strong grip on the sock and often slips or must let go forcing him to stretch his arms down again and contort his body to reach his foot. When he finally gets the sock on he pulls on the sides to make sure it fits correctly, this is particularly difficult as he cannot manoeuvre his arms so easily.”
With using our design the User still has some control via sliding their foot in the head. This, as well as, the fact the whole process takes less time than before, due to automation, gives the User their independence. This is something that is not really talked about in the requirements but is so important for aging people to have! I am glad we could enable them to have independents. There is now no need to account for 5 minutes of putting on socks in their daily routine and they can go live live to the fullest rather than fluffing around.
We have made deliberate decisions to ensure the comfortability of the User throughout the whole process with having them sit during the process to the curved edges of the head/ foot rest. Comfortability will also be important in the detailed design - with material consideration. The User no longer needs to bend and strain their back but can now sit down and merely add a sock to the device and control the device using a remote - then device moves away.
