So just now I was thinking about what would happen is the Exwires from the beggining of the series met their current selves.

So of course you’ve got Shiemi being in awe of a version of her that’s so brace and confident and Suguro wondering what the hell happened to his roster hair and Rin demanding some answers to what the hell happened to his future EVERYTHING becuase his hair is white and he’s got fangs and that’s a f u c K I n g T a i L and OH SHIT HE’S ON FIRE WHAT THE F U C K

But none of them can make me laugh harder than picturing Koneko just fuckin crying becuase he didn’t get any taller.

Ma questo è ufficialmente lo Yukio più bello che ti è uscito finora! E se ogni volta che ti assenti ritorni con una marcia in più, tra 2 disegni mi fai morire per eeccessivo nosebleed! Non ho visto il disegno di cui parli ma questo concept è favoloso! Sei bravissima come sempre, io ti abbraccio e ti ringrazio per il tag! (sono anche la prima? Rin’s flaws and reaching Yukio

Time for even more theories about Rin and Yukio! This post is mainly focused on Rin, his flaws, and how he’ll have to grow to reconnect with Yukio. Yukio’s problems have gotten a lot of fandom attention thanks to his impressive dramatics. Rin’s problems are comparatively overlooked. I’ve seen him assigned flaws that he doesn’t have: brooding, self-harming, and sometimes plain ol’ wangst (ironically, these are all stereotypically Yukio). I think this is because his actual narrative flaws are closely related to what makes him so goddamn popular, which is…

Rin is ridiculously genuine! He’s the friendly and chipper shounen protagonist who doesn’t hesitate to help others in trouble. He has strong emotions and reactions. 

But it is also his core flaw. When Rin feels overwhelming negative emotions, he blacks out, acts violently, and wakes up to see the damage he’s caused.

Time for an essay!

This is positively one of the best Rin's character analysis I ever read so far. Well, also thanks to earthy's amazingly fluent and neat writing skills, so I didn’t expect nothing less.

I so agree with everything and you also had me notice some things I never even consider, like: "He didn’t let Yukio help him, even though Yukio tried to tell him that their dad was just worried about him." That's so damn important too. And it is yet another mirror aspect the twins share. Makes you wanna curse them even more when you think about stuff like this but you watch them just keep thinking they're like oil and water.

In other words, this: "the key will be in realizing that he and Yukio are similar."

The importance of shading

Kato made a bunch of changes in Volume 21, but there’s a minor one I really, really like: the shading in the panels as Yukio points his gun at Rin.

We’re in Rin’s perspective, looking at Yukio, who just looks exhausted and hardly threatening, although Yukio’s left eye is in shadow. Rin doesn’t move, refusing to believe Yukio would betray him. But then we get this shot:

The shading changes. The focus is on Yukio’s left eye, still in shadow. But the red dot in the center of Yukio’s eye, his only always-visible indicator of his heritage, becomes brighter than the light source. This is when Rin knows Yukio is going to shoot him. Yukio does as he declares he doesn’t need Rin’s help.

Both of Yukio’s eyes end up in shadow, darkest shading around his left eye, not to mention the background changing to all-black.

It’s a minor artistic change, but it really emphasizes how Rin’s view of Yukio changes in a matter of seconds. Rin starts out ignoring what Yukio said about how he was defective while Rin was special. Rin only sees his outdated view of Yukio: tired and distinctly harmless. And then Rin realizes Yukio’s actually going to do it. He sees someone else. Someone who has neither regret nor remorse for the pain they inflict. Someone dangerous who needs to be stopped, not saved. Not his brother. A stranger.

Very interesting analysis. It also made me think: put in another way, it’s like during those moments, if we consider the “shadows” as some sort of symbol, Rin could see another side of Yukio he never saw before: his “darker” one. As in: shadows=darkest/secret part of Yukio.
