Brazilian crime novelist Patricia Melo, in a Q&A with 9MM. The UK’s Bitter Lemon Press brings English-language translations of Melo’s original Portuguese works to the US library market.
Penguin Random House’s Celebra imprint, publishing in Spanish and English, was founded in 2007. On the quiet side until relatively recently, it’s a wonderful resource for librarians collecting popular Spanish-language content. Most of it is nonfiction and celebrity-authored, per its name.
If you’ve never explored Celebra’s catalog, do so in time for Hispanic Heritage Month (9/15/15-10/15/15).
PREPUB BUZZ NAACP award-winning writer Reginald Dwayne Betts is making ripples with his forthcoming poetry collection, Bastards of the Reagan Era (October 6, Four Way Books).
Autobiographical in nature, it tells stories of young African American men who were victimized systematically by law enforcement in 1980s Washington, DC. The war on drugs was code for an assault on an entire demographic, per Betts.
I know what you’re thinking: “I don’t collect poetry in e, or poetry. Period.” But Betts could ride the wave of U.S. race relations awareness that tragedies like Ferguson have sparked. Display it with Ta-Nehisi Coates’ New York Times best-selling Between the World and Me.
The number of people who read primarily on phones has risen to 14% in the first quarter of 2015 from 9% in 2012. Meanwhile, those reading mainly on e-readers, such as Kindles and Nooks, dropped over the same period to 32% from 50%. Even tablet reading has declined recently to 41% in the first quarter this year from 44% in 2014.

For obvious reasons, I wonder what this means for ebook consumption in libraries. Will nonfiction spike? Short stories? Will children’s content fade?
This paragraph from Amazon is interesting:
“Among all new customers using Kindles or the Kindle app, phone readers are by far the fastest-growing segment, an Amazon spokeswoman said, declining to disclose figures. Among those who use the Kindle app, more people now read books on the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus than on any other Apple device, even the popular iPad Mini, she said.”

Day Three: Melbourne. In which I visited three of the Melbourne City Libraries, including the recently reopened Kathleen Syme, the downtown City branch, and the Library at the Dock, which looks over the harbor (seen here). I was wonderfully hosted by their staff, and we discussed their community hub model, and their Reader Development Services (stealing that name for sure). I took a lot of boring-to-most-people photos of library interiors that I won’t post here, and I’ll probably write more about these service models when I have access to a computer, somewhere down the line. Thanks to cloudunbound, I was also able to meet up with her pal Zoe, and we discussed the ebook market and the changing face of digital media. At the top in the photos, the little house I am staying in here in the Carlton neighborhood. I am renting a room that comes with a little loft sitting room, complete with Australian Netflix, in which I binge-watched five episodes of ORPHAN BLACK. (Don’t judge, I am on vacation.) Not pictured: the house cat, a sweet little thing named Chopper. Tomorrow: a day with the State Library of Victoria.
My friend Stephanie Chase, director of the Hillsboro Library (OR), embarked on her epic world tour using airline miles a few days ago. First stop: Australia, where she’s taking in some Melbourne-area libraries. It’s a drop-dead gorgeous country, much likes its libraries.
Let’s hope she posts pictures of the stunning State Library of Victoria and shares more of what she’s learning about library policy Down Under. Her meetings, scheduled across a few continents, impress upon me again how collaborative the profession is.

Founded in 1999, the publishing arm of The New York Review of Books has reissued everything from ancient Chinese poems to a never-released Chekhov story collection to the literary sleeper “Stoner.”

What happens when someone on the autism spectrum grows up, and they aren’t a cute little boy anymore? Gottlieb’s novel follows the story of Todd Aaron, a man in his fifties who has spent most of his life a resident of the Payton Living Center. Todd begins to wonder what lies beyond the gates of his institution. A funny and deeply affecting work.
