The World Is A Beautiful Place - Whenever, If Ever Review
I've been putting this review off for far too long and I don't know why honestly. There's nothing not to like about this record. Sure, with the first two songs, a new listener might feel a little off-set by the slow build-up and the vocalist. But when "Fightboat" kicks in, the trumpet/guitar intro sucks you in, and although short, this song packs a punch in its 2 minutes.
And then you might feel like 'oh, another slow song' when "Picture of a Tree That Doesn't Look Okay" comes on, but it soon bubbles into an incredible anthem, just as almost every song by this band seems to do. This is true again for "You Will Never Go to Space", but is again turned into a wonderful tune with bubbling synth.
"The Layers Of Skin We Drag Around" follows "Fightboat"'s formula as a faster song, and then comes "Ultimate Steve", a gigantic build-up only to make way for the album's greatest moment: "Gig Life". This song is an acoustic number about the sadness and beauties of touring, with an exquisite bassline. And this is where the idea of what TWIABP is all about, but we'll come back to that. Anyway, "Gig Life". One of the greatest tracks in this band's collection.
We again have a slower song in "Low Light Assembly". You might think that this collection of songs that tend to start slow and build up might discourage listeners, but if you ask me, that's the beauty of this band: crafting wonderful crescendos. And then we finally come to the finale, "Getting Sodas".
This song is 7 minutes long, but it surprisingly does not start off slow. In fact, it has a pretty steady tempo with epic guitar work and a chockful of emotion (this is emo after all, isn't it?). And then the song turns into an intense chant for almost 2 and a half minutes. With four of the most beautiful lines I've ever heard in a song, the band ends an amazing record. Just like with "Gig Life", these last four lines explain that in spite of the mess of a world, we can still make it a beautiful place by just thinking that way. This is exactly what sets TWIABP aside from other emo bands, and makes them a force to be reckoned with.
