I have a silly little newsletter where I write about all the TV I have watched in a week, and I said this about Sheepstealer:
First of all, Sheepstealer did nothing wrong. I mean, he did many things wrong, but it wasn’t his fault! You can’t just take a feral dragon into a war zone and expect him to understand concepts like “allies” and “please don’t set our allies’ ships on fire” right away! He’s doing his best! You could argue that this is actually Rhaena’s fault, and she did choose to bring her new feral dragon into said war zone, however, I would argue that she is barely an adult and has spent her entire life being brainwashed to believe that riding dragons into battle is a good idea and will in no way end in disaster. In short, those ships were destroyed and people and dragons were killed because of systemic forces.
And I stand by that. No one is to blame for any of this, except Aemond Targaryen because he is the actual worst. Even though he wasn't there at the time. THE WORST.

I wanted to start my post off with “now I’m not saying Kathryn Janeway would be a bad mother,” but that’s a coward’s equivocation because that’s exactly what I’m saying.
Captain Janeway would be a bad mother. I’m sure any kid she had would adore her, as she did her father, but she’s a high-ranking military official with a known tendency to overwork herself. She is known to sacrifice relationships with important people in her life and has a stubborn habit of believing she’s always in the right (because, admittedly, history has often shown that she is).
I’m sorry, but that woman is not designed to get married, have a baby, and life an idyllic life aboard a starship that allows families. She is designed to show up an hour late to the function bearing ridiculously expensive bottles of wine, ruffle the hair of all the youngsters, and leave at precisely the time considered polite because she has a project she “really should be working on.”
Maybe, when she gets home to her classy Irish residence on the cliff-side, she will spare a moment to gaze wistfully at the Janeway family photo, trace her fingers over the faces of Phoebe’s daughters and think, “Ah, but what if…?”
But that’s IT. That woman ain’t raising any baby she can’t hand over to its legal guardian after a few hours.
Yes, but also, one of the first things she does when she's given custody of a handful of high schoolers is give the hyperactive ADHD kid espresso. Gotta believe she knew what she was doing there.
In fairness to Janeway, before she gives the hyperactive ADHD kid espresso, she works very, very hard to make them someone else's responsibility.
Which is her approach to all children from Voyager through to Prodigy: she's nice to them, in an impersonal sort of way, but if there's someone else standing nearby who can take over -- the Doctor, Neelix, Seven of Nine, maybe the child's actual parent if there's no other option -- they're on Kid Duty.
She's very good with mentoring junior officers and younger people who are of legal drinking age. But kids? Teens? No.

had a dream last night that the hot new trek ship taking over tumblr was Julian/Janeway. 90% of the fan works were epistolary fic where Julian gets really into the idea of the doomed mission of voyager and sends Janeway fanmail once they re-establish contact, which rapidly turns into a steamy long-distance romance that brings them both much needed distraction from their respective spirals into depression and gives fans free reign to write Janeway going full cougar. and it was so hugely popular in my dream like every third post on the dash was about them

Aaaaaah Janeway and Bashir are two of my top three favourite characters in Trek, I don’t ship them at all but I would LOVE to read those imaginary fics. Also the couple generator gave me Harry Kim x Ezri Dax, and they would be a good secondary couple in these imaginary fics haha.

Anyway, my theory is that TOS was mostly written by white men who had served in WW2 and still believed in American institutions (see also: the generally ambiguous attitude towards the Vietnam War), whereas the movies and everything that followed post-dated Watergate. And that's why Kirk in TOS is the Star Trek captain who works hardest to follow orders to the letter wherever possible.
the idea of pointing out avery brooks "overacting" while apparently not noticing he's doing the same exact thing as kirk or picard - (literally just theatre acting) reminds me of the people who made a big deal out of michael burnham "crying all the time". when she literally doesn't that much, it's never for no reason, other trek characters cried before too and also weird to find it annoying in the first place. also i know what you are
