Collective Mentalgassi

German street art Collective Mentalgassi, recently teamed up with Mundano in São Paulo, Brazil, to create a series of illustrated characters cleverly installed against trash bins that have been made to look like backpacks. The project which was created for environmental and cultural group "Pimp my Carroça", aims to give more visibility to the trash bins scatterd troughout the city, helping the public embrace the importance of recycling and litter reduction.

100en1día

Movimento social originado em Bogotá, Colômbia, que visa inspirar cidadãos a promover mudanças em escala significativa, transformando cidades em um período de 24 horas. 

O projeto já encorajou centenas de intervenções nas cidades colombianas de Bogotá, Pasto, Pamplona e Chinú, e do mundo como San José (EUA), Cidade do Cabo e Copenhagen, através de street art, jardins urbanos e ciclovias – tudo surgindo no mesmo dia.

Outras cidades já mostraram interesse em replicar o projeto. Como resultado a equipe por trás de 100en1día, está trabalhando em desenvolver uma plataforma online para facilitar o lançamento de versões locais: “Queremos deixar claro que 100en1día é um projeto para os cidadãos entrarem em ação e criarem sua cidade dos sonhos”.

A BATATA PRECISA DE VOCÊ (SP)

A Batata Precisa de Você promove a ocupação regular do Largo da Batata, em Pinheiros. Nossos objetivos são fortalecer a relação afetiva da população local com o Largo da Batata; evidenciar o potencial de um espaço hoje tão árido como local de convivência; testar possibilidades de ocupação e reivindicar infraestrutura permanente que melhore a qualidade do Largo como espaço público. É um exercício de democracia em escala local. Um movimento de cidadania e concretização social e urbanística. Uma maneira que as pessoas tem de lutar, de maneira inteligente e positiva, por melhorias imediatas nas suas condições. As atividades culturais e de lazer tem espaço todas as sextas-feiras ao final do dia, como grupos musicais ou conversas sobre temas urbanos, como sobre os rios da cidade. A partir das 18h, o Largo é tomado por mobiliário que todos levam, como cadeiras, guarda-sóis e redes, para que todos estejam confortáveis durante as atividades. Se agende pra próxima sexta, pegue seu banquinho e leve pra Batata, não costumamos deixar o Largo antes da meia noite.

O evento TECNOPOLÍTICAS, DEMOCRACIA E URBANISMO TÁTICO envolvendo Seminário e Workshop pretende reunir um grupo de profissionais e pesquisadores interessados na investigação e na a aplicação das tecnologias digitais de comunicação aos processos de produção do espaço urbano. Partindo de um contexto de urbanização crescente junto da expansão tecnológica informacional observa-se uma transformação acelerada dos modos de vida nos territórios metropolitanos, mas ao mesmo tempo observa-se que não há uma incorporação correspondente desses raciocínios e recursos informacionais aos instrumentos de planejamento e gestão das cidades, sobretudo no que concerne ao fortalecimento do diálogo entre os seus habitantes e o poder público.

¿como AUTO-gestionar 12 m2 o 30 m3? uno de los problemas en común de las grandes urbes es el uso y abuso del automóvil y los fenómenos que de éste se desprenden.  hay ciudades que optan por dar más espacio a los automóviles; otras en cambio se aventuran el constante ejercicio de recuperar los espacios públicos, para regresarlos a los ciudadanos.  méxico, ciudad pensada para los automóviles que ahora busca recuperar los espacios públicos perdidos, ganárselos a los coches, que –cual rebelión de las máquinas- nos lo han quitado. derivado del problema de inseguridad en la ciudad de méxico, en esta colonia como en muchas otras, los vecinos deciden “enjaular sus vehículos” para no ser víctimas de robo, daños o desperfectos. esto convierte a los estacionamientos en sitios de hacinamiento vehicular. paisajes repletos de coches enjaulados. espacios sin consideraciones estéticas que contribuyen al detrimento de la imagen de las U.H. ¿cómo recuperar este espacio público de una invasión generada por la inseguridad de la ciudad?  la idea matriz de C.A.R. es convertir un objeto como la jaula, en algo más que solo un área de guardado para un vehículo. de origen estas jaulas “customizadas” pueden dejar de tener una apariencia arcaica y ser un objeto multiuso, que lleven valores agregados como diseño, funcionalidad y sostenibilidad; al tener un uso mixto se amplían las posibilidades de la jaula, ahora ya no solo darían un servicio particular sino también su servicio colectivo es decir funcionarían como equipamiento para la comunidad. la actuación en la U.H.A.P.R. consiste en la conformación de un plan maestro con participación de la comunidad para la recuperación del espacio público en las jaulas en los estacionamientos de la unidad habitacional.  el plan maestro íntegra los programas de los diferentes tipos de jaulas: C.A.R. hortaliza, C.A.R. cinema, C.A.R. porteria, C.A.R. pluvial, C.A.R. bici, C.A.R.

Thulumtwana Children’s Facility Gauteng, South Africa, 2000

The project, the first of its kind to be both child owned and managed, is a prototype for other initiatives that will acknowledge children’s rights in informal settlements. Emerging from a considered research process, the project’s setting in an informal settlement seeks to dignify the young and their work, and offer hope for social transformation in a bleak context.

Three modified shipping containers, shade structures and low enclosing walls were employed to articulate a series of outdoor rooms and courtyards for playing and learning. Mounded earth provided access to the roof of one of the containers in response to the children’s expressed need for places to climb in what was a barren treeless environment. The other containers, at the wish of the children, were designed as places for doing homework. As the existing settlement had no trees or other means of shelter from the sun in the public realm, a strong emphasis was placed on providing shade. These formed ‘outdoor rooms’ with places to sit and rest whilst also functioning as secure places for social gatherings, workshops and meetings to discuss community issues.

RAINCITY HOUSING: BENCH 1

Raincity housing provides specialized housing and support services for the homeless. To help communicate this, we created a transit bench that transforms into a temporary shelter for those in desperate need. When the roof is up Rain City Housing’s address is posted on the inside along with the message “Find a home here”.

(fos) is the name of the first installation of (fos), the name as the team itself. The word fos means melted in Catalan and light in Greek language. The protected facade of Rayen restaurant, in Barrio de las Letras - Madrid, has been illuminated for 4 days and nights by about 250m of yellow adhesive tape. The installation gives the illusion of an artificial light shining from above the restaurant's entrance. By using tape, pineapples, painted pieces of art, lawn furniture and ... a lamp, (fos) created a visual spectacle between perspective and colour volumes. The tape covered both, vertical and horizontal surfaces, creating a skin which followed the beam’s shape.The color covered the items only where the light fell, regarding the front view. The result was a visual game that would stroke passersby’s attention.

STAIRWAY CINEMA

Stairway Cinema is the third major installation by OH.NO.SUMO. Our ongoing goal is to experiment with architecture and the way it can engage with the public in unique and exciting ways. This project takes inspiration from the site and its inhabitants. The intersection of Symonds Street and Mount Street is a place of ‘hard waiting’. Bus stops and laundromats create a hard-scape of poor space for social interaction. Members of the public retreat individually into the media offered on their mobile phones. This in turn results in greater separation and dislocation from an existing community that is waiting to be activated. A community must be linked not only virtually but also physically. 

Stairway Cinema offers a very simple programmatic response to recognise and counter this larger issue. Short movies previously shared online, are projected for the public to enjoy, offering similar media to that sought out on their phones. The individual experience is exchanged for the communal and social, leading to a shared, fun and architecturally framed experience. Movies are collected from internet recommendations that have been shared by the public through social media. The public curate this virtual collection of media continuously and the cinema captures current trends and highlights within this realm. Stairway Cinema uses architecture as a way of engaging in a discussion about curatorial practice, urbanism and the role of Architects as place-makers and provocateurs. 

The structure is a slender timber truss made from 24x24mm pine members. Covering this frame is a triple skin system of fabric that provides a waterproof exterior, a dappled light effect and a soft tactile interior surface. Sited above an existing exterior stairway the fabric and timber hood creates a new interior within the public realm; a space that is free to enter and welcomes all. The interior, softened with custom made cushions, offers a repurposed seating tier. Over the entrance video content is projected onto the screen at the cantilevered end of the structure.
