Self Reflection 4: Digital and Economic Self

I am not entirely attached to technology however it does play a huge role in my life as it is avenue of communication academically or with my organizations. As I have mentioned before, I am a member of the DLSU Green Media Group and so we utilize the digital world to promote art in our university. I mostly use the digital to convey my thoughts, share my insights and mostly promote art and artists as I am really passionate when it comes to art. I believe that my family’s economic status has a role as to why I can easily access the digital world in different devices and whatnot. I could the sociological perspective because in the digital world I can connect with different people all around the world, that means that I come across different personalities and attitudes that helps me understand myself as a person as well. The anthropological perspective can also be seen in this situation because given that we come across different people in the digital world, that also means that we come across different cultures and beliefs that help us shape our culture and beliefs as well. In order to achieve social justice, we must act upon the injustices that is occurring in our motherland. We should start the change that we have been longing for. We cannot always rely on the government to hand us everything even social justice because they could only do so much and some of the people in the government are too greedy to even spare the Filipinos. If we do not unite and do something to achieve social justice, then our country will definitely not progress. For me, since we have the privilege to have a voice in the digital world, we should put it to good use. We must always post with a purpose, we must educate our fellow countrymen about the injustice that occurs in our country and how we could work together to prevent it from further progressing. Our participation in the digital world plays a huge role in achieving equality because if we use our voice to promote equality rather than bringing each other down on social media then, we will slowly achieve equality. I believe that equality is not something you wish for rather it is something you should work hard for.

Self Reflection 3: Cultural and Political Self

I could say that my view for culture and politics is equalized. What I meqn by this is that they both go hand in hand as how I view and move in the society. My cultural side resonates with my love for arts and indigenous materials in our country. On the other hand, my political side resonates with my critical thinking and how I share my arguments about what happens in our society. I want to first talk about myself as a culture-bearer. I am currently a memebr of the DLSU Green Media Group, under the Culture and Arts office, we stage productions in our university that promotes our Filipino culture in different art forms. I am really grateful to be a part of the Culture and Arts program because working with people that shares the same passion and love for arts and promoting Filipino culture is rare in our generation. I have learned and is still learning a lot about our Filipino culture in every production that we stage. It has opened my eyes that we ought to share this knowledge to our age group because our culture and heritage is very rich. I bear our culture by staging productions in school that help promote Filipino culture. In terms of politics, I am not really an activist although I do voice out my arguments in social media because it is important that the voice of the youth to be heard.

I can integrate the political and anthropological perspective as to why I have this feeling and beliefs towards culture and politics. I see myself as someone who will continue to spread cultural awareness in every way that I can. I also want to promote social issues in the form of art in this lifetime.

Self Reflection 2: Religion and Spirituality

I was born into a Catholic family and so I grew up in a very religious community. I believe that my religion has an effect on how I perceive the things that happen in my life. For example, I would like to believe that it is all a part of God’s plan as to why I was born into a family whose religion is Catholicism. My grandmother was the most religious person in our family, this affected my faith and spirituality because when I was a kid the first thing that I would see when I wake up is my grandmother praying on the altar with a Bible on her hand. She also taught me as a child that I should not seek for God’s help when I need something from him or when I am upset but I should pray even in the good times. I was always enrolled in a Catholic school as well wherein the promotion of Christianity is really strong. To be honest one of those schools made me feel so suffocated because it was as if they were forcing students to be religious which I do not support because it comes off as being hypocritical as prayers and mass should be genuine and not enforced by the upper hand. Suffice to say, my religion was a puzzle piece as I grew up because I had to figure out what pieces should come together in order to strengthen my faith.

If I were to integrate a perspective in my life when it comes to religion I would say that the Anthropological perspective would best fit this because my religion was influenced by my family’s culture and that influenced my spirituality as well. I would not be this faithful if it was not for my family’s prior culture and beliefs in the said field. My family’s belief in religion has shaped me to be a very caring person, I could say that because I always care for other people and nurture them in any way possible. One of the things that I love about my family’s belief is that even if we are Catholics, they taught me to respect other people’s religion and beliefs as they never fail to remind me that we all have a God that we believe in and we should learn to respect other people’s beliefs in life. My spirituality is rooted in my religion because it affects how I treat other people and how I view life. I treat people like how God would treat me and that in every darkness that life will bring me I always choose to look for the bright side even if it seem like there is no bright side. I am thankful that I was raised to be genuinely religious because it has helped me to always see the good in everyone and everything and for me, that is what the world needs right now.

The only question that I have in mind is that why is life unfair?

Self Reflection 1: Physical Body and Sexuality

Ever since I was child, I was always labeled as “malnourished” because of my skinny body. I grew up thinking that something was wrong with me and the society made me think that way because of how my body was built. Another aspect of my life wherein my physical body and sexuality was tested was when I started playing football back in high school. People kept questioning me as to why I chose that sport when I could have just chosen pep squad as my sport as what any girl would choose. I think that the suitable perspective in my case is in the view of Sociology because as a child, society always found a way to dictate what my physical body is and how the sport I chose does not meet the standards of my sexuality. At first, I thought that we should always live up to the expectations of the society and that “the self” depends on them but as I grew up I realized how wrong that was.

As I matured I got upset with how society always have something to say about our physical body and most importantly our sexuality. My favorite perspective though is Psychology and in my case I guess I learned how to train my mind that I do not have to live up to what society dictates because what matters is how I perceive myself and what makes me understand who I truly am as a person. I used to be insecure of my body as people would label me as a skinny person but as time passed by I learned how to outgrow my flaws and I understood that we all have flaws and that we should not point out other people’s flaw as it may affect their well being, physically and mentally. In terms of my sexuality, even if I chose to play football it did not affect my sexuality, I know that I am still straight it is just that I chose a sport that promotes self defense although it may come off as aggressiveness to other people. As I am writing this, I realized that maybe the reason why I chose that type of sport is to protect myself from people and at the same time football helped strengthen my mental toughness which is helpful in both the football field and the outside world.

I am still in the process of identifying as to what makes me happy in this lifetime. I guess as long as I do everything with passion and with a purpose I can live a meaningful life that will give me happiness in the long run. At the same time, I get my happiness from making people happy. As cliche as it may sound, I love making people happy but that does not mean that their happiness comes before mine. I truly believe that in order to live a happy life you must not let other people’s opinion affect you because what matters is what you think. Lastly, always be the person you needed when you were young.

Note to all girls

You don’t HAVE to have a boyfriend before you reach your 20’s. I see a lot of girls saying they feel insecure because they’ve never had a boyfriend or are still a virgin. Don’t hate that about yourself, it just shows that you are capable of surviving tough teenage yourself, and with the added bonus of no heart breaks! Sometimes the people who are meant to be in your lives will come later than others. But that one person will come and it will be good.

Accept the fact that you will grow apart from people you’ve had significant relationships with. Understand when someone no longer positively affects your life. Let them go. Don’t hinder your growth.
