in 1997, winslow schott senior tells mary mcgowan that he would rather kill their son than see him taken away from him. in 1998, he's arrested for mass murder and domestic terrorism after mailing a bomb to his boss, and mary runs, leaving their 10 year old son winn to bounce around the foster system.

in 2005, winslow escapes prison and makes good on his threats against winn.

no one is expecting him to show up at split river high when he breaks out, but he does, hunts his son down there to the auto body shop where he's been tinkering with a car engine. the explosion is just as unexpected. he'd set a bomb to go off if he couldn't get winn to agree to come with him. if he can't have him, no one else will, either.

winslow survives the blast, but winn doesn't.

he's stuck at split river now, alongside the other ghosts who haunt the school. he'd never really had friends in life, but in death he actually seems to have people who care for him, who want to look out for him, and it's a new experience that he can't get enough of, even if he doesn't always know what to do with it.

when mr. martin betrays them all, winn is devastated. the first adult who he'd felt truly cared for him, and it turned out to all be a lie to manipulate them, just like his own father always lied.

his key is, to his dismay, the bomb winslow had created, hidden inside a teddy bear.

also as usual, winn doesn't really come out or even start to accept/feel comfortable with himself as a whole outside his sexuality until after he has friends and people in his life who genuinely care about him

meaning he's been dead for a good few years before he comes out in this verse
