Concert Weirdos x Big Picture Media x SXSW: Kolars
âKOLARS is a Los Angeles duo that blends rockabilly, disco, glam, and mod sounds with modern rock through minimal instrumentation: guitar and a tap-dancing drummer. As Rob Kolar sings and strums his rollicking guitar, Lauren Brown uses her whole body as a percussive instrument, tapping out the hi-hat rhythm with her feet atop a bass drum while simultaneously playing a stand-up kit, using dance to transform rhythms into natural extensions of her movement. Itâs quite the workout and undeniably mesmerizing to watch.
As former members of glam-folk band Heâs My Brother Sheâs My Sister, Rob and Lauren toured the U.S. and Europe extensively, playing some of the best stages and festivals, including Bonnaroo, Summerfest, Firefly, Secret Garden Party, and Austin City Limits, and performed on late night television (Craig Ferguson). As that band veered towards indefinite hiatus, Rob and Lauren decided to strip things down and explore what they could do as a twosome. A match musically and romantically sublime, thereâs no denying the electricity this husband and wife duo have on stage.â (Source)Â
Concert Weirdos x Big Picture Media x SXSW: Kylie HughesÂ
âOriginally from Malibu, California, Kylie Hughes entered the music scene in 2014 with her debut EP Calipopicana. Her passion for spontaneous adventure and obvious musical talent quickly earned the attention of fans and critics, landing features with Examiner, Good Day LA, K-CAL TV 9, Instyle, com and a spot on Music Connection's list of Hot 100 Unsigned Artists. Celeb Mix recently praised Hughes saying, âKylie Hughes is a little piece of sunshine whose talent in songwriting is matched by the incredible mix of power and sweetness in her voice.ââ
Concert Weirdos x Big Picture Media x SXSW: Emily Bell & The Talkbacks
âWith a powerful, sultry voice that evokes comparisons to artists as diverse as K.T. Tunstall, Girl in a Comaâs Nina Diaz and Ronnie Spector, Emily Bell has made it to the top of the âmust see liveâ list in Austin, Texas. Her debut album In Technicolor was self-released on May 28, and her single âBack to the Way I Wasâ was picked up by close to 200 national radio stations and video outlets respectively. Since then, Bell has done two national tours, performed live on the Ron & Fez Show on Sirius XM, the Artie Lang Show, BreakThru Radio, and even got her own day in Austin when the Mayor proclaimed August 22, 2013 âEmily Bell Day.â Interrobang.com also ranked Bell No. 1 on its list of the top five artists to watch at SXSW 2013 â after listening to 1,210 tracks from showcasing acts.â (Source) Â
My favorite time of year is fast approaching and many people have been telling me that this is their very first Warped Tour, so I figured what better of a time to create a survival guide! This summer looks like itâs going to be hotter than ever and itâs necessary to properly prepare when youâre going to be out in the sun in a parking lot with a thousand other people for 8+ hours.
What to bring:
Water bottle - And donât throw it away when youâre done with it! Cool Gear has free water refill stations at every single date of the tour!
*PRO TIP: Iâve learned over the years that investing in an inexpensive Camelbak backpack is a true lifesaver.
Sunscreen - Reapply throughout the day!
Sunglasses
Hat - Optional, but recomended
Backpack
Small snacks - Venues will charge you $10 for a slice of old pizza or a gross hot dog; bring snacks to survive the day
Cash - A lot of people are still in the stone ages and donât yet have card readers so to be safe (and avoid ridiculous ATM fees), bring some cash!
Phone, charger, AND external battery pack!
Notebook - Write down set times! Just incase your phone dies, you still have a list of who you want to see!
Sharpie - for autographs!
Hand Sanitizer
What to wear:
Throughout my years at Warped, I have seen countless kids wearing black jeans and black hoodies. This is a major no-no. It is hot out, black absorbs heat. Wearing stuff like this is not safe and is the reason so many people pass out and have to go to the ER. Be sensible, yâall.
Tank Top/Short Sleeve Shirt.
LIGHT COLORS
Shorts
Closed toe shoes
Other Tips:
Donât drink too much alcohol.
If you can't handle the crowd, stay away! And if you go into something you know you can't handle, it is only your fault.
If you've never been to a show in which a pit opened up, I'd recommend staying away from those crowds or aiming for barricade so you've got something to hold on to.
Don't be a brat! If you're gonna complain, you shouldn't have come in the first place!!
Drink lots of water!!
Put sunscreen on!!
Don't wear a ton of makeup because it will run and you'll look like a clown.
Drink lots of water!!!!
Pick a meeting spot in case you and your friends get separated
Make sure you know where the first aid tent is, just incase!
Put the bands you wanna see, their record label and the Warped twitter on mobile updates on twitter so you can know if there are any last minute set changes and when signings are!
Use common sense and be safe!!
LAST BUT NOT LEAST: Have fun! Warped is an amazing experience; make the best of it.
