I am with you always

“Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” — Matthew 28:20 (NKJV)

Jesus has just commissioned His disciples to go, make disciples, and teach the nations. It’s a weighty assignment. Yet His last words aren’t about what they must do, it’s about what He will do. “I am with you always.”

What makes that promise even more remarkable is the audience receiving it. Just a few verses earlier, Matthew tells us that while some worshiped, some doubted. The risen Christ stood before them, and yet questions still lingered in their hearts. Jesus didn’t withdraw the commission or withhold His promise, He simply assured them of His presence. That reveals something beautiful about God. His presence isn’t reserved for people who have everything figured out. He remains with those who are still learning, growing, and trusting Him through unanswered questions.

Life has a way of placing us in seasons we never would have chosen. Responsibilities pile up, family burdens grow heavy and answered prayers seem delayed. Some days faith looks less like victory and more like simply showing up and doing what needs to be done. In those moments, we often want explanations but Jesus offers His presence. He never promised that every burden would disappear or every question would be answered. He promised that He would be there. As David declared, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me” (Psalm 23:4). The valley remained, but so did God.

Don’t measure God’s nearness by the ease of your circumstances. His presence is often most evident in the places where His strength quietly carries us when our own strength runs low. Matthew’s Gospel begins with Jesus being called Immanuel, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). It ends with Jesus saying, “I am with you always.” That’s no coincidence.

The One who called you is the One who stays. And sometimes the greatest miracle isn’t that God changes the situation, it’s that He remains faithfully present while He changes you.
