12:31AM Hannibal thoughts: what if Hannibal wasn’t the original Chesapeake Ripper? he tells Matthew Brown that he would have to eat him to become the Ripper, what if Hannibal just adopts titles by consuming the original holder

You could expand on this to and retcon the show’s decision to make Hannibal il Mostro, which he wasn’t in the novel. 

Young Hannibal could have decided that il Mostro’s crimes weren’t Extra™ enough, and have killed him, and put him into the first il Mostro crime he elevated to art. With organs missing, of course…

This then sets up Hannibal choosing to become GJH’s copycat, and then again killing the Muralist and putting him into his own work. It becomes a consistent pattern to improve on the work of lesser killers.

It’s a very rich and profound friendship, and love even. Once Will realises who Hannibal is, it complicates that but it doesn’t just wipe the slate clean. It doesn’t change the fact of their connection.
