I know I’ve been really inactive lately, but I’ve been keeping up with Dark Heaven, and the latest chapter.... Fucking hell.

My One Problem With Dark Heaven

As much as I love Dark Heaven and would literally worship the ground JUNS walks on given the opportunity, I have one problem with it. Dark Heaven is one of the best BL webtoons/manga/manhwa/etc I’ve read and that’s because it manages to avoid a whole lot of the typical toxic crap you find in most BL. At it’s core, it’s about two guys who love each other, and these guys are equals. There’s no seme/uke (is there a korean equivalent?) , dominant/submissive dynamic, physically/mentally weaker/stronger roles, there’s no “I’m not into men, it’s just you I like”, there’s no coercing a partner into sex, and most importantly, there’s no rape/abuse/manipulation that progresses a romantic relationship.

But…there’s a common trope I see in a lot of BL (and I think JUNS kind of dropped the ball on this one) and that’s the “The Evil Woman Trope”. In a lot of BL there’s either no women or there’s a woman who comes into the picture for no other express purpose, but to cause havoc in the guys’ lives. There’s usually a woman that comes along and intrudes in the relationship by any means possible. Sometimes she’s a friend and most of the time she’s a girlfriend or an ex-girlfriend. She’s sees the guy she’s in love with and tries to get back with him no matter what it takes. She becomes cruel, vindictive, and manipulative. She usually tries to manipulate the guy into being with her. A lot of the time she tries to trap him with a pregnancy and in the recent chapters of Dark Heaven, that’s exactly what Veronica/Ronnie has turned into. It really sucks because I liked Ronnie at first and felt sympathy for her. I hoped that JUNS would not turn her into an evil bitch like I expected (because this happens all the time), but I was let down. What’s even worse is that it looks like, given the most recent chapter, Ronnie’s going to get even worse. I’m disappointed in this direction because JUNS was doing so well with not falling into the typical BL. She’s still doing great aside from this one thing, so I can only hope that she can redeem Ronnie in some kind of way (though I doubt it), because I just really hate seeing such negative portrayals of most of the women in BL.

I don’t know how long it will go on, I just hope to get as much as possible :)

I enjoy the world and the characters a lot. Simon and Conor and their relationship is interesting, and I like how it touches on heavy themes of mental illness and drug abuse, while still keeping Simon and Conor’s relationship healthy and happy (for the most part).

Also, I love how unique the art style is, it’s not like most BL manhwas or mangas :)

I always read Dark Heaven on Lezhin, which has Dark Heaven up to chapter 70, so I don’t know if it’s available anywhere else :)
