My final image from Brazil is this: unprompted, my Rio cab driver, taking me to the airport, shows me the home screen image on his phone. It’s the logo of the football club he supports, Flamengo (the most popular team in Brazil), shaped like a heart. And it pulses.

I visit Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, home to the endangered golden lion tamarin, was once a massive ecosystem stretching along the Brazilian coast. But centuries of human activity have encroached upon the forest, leaving the future of this tiny, lion-maned monkey in doubt.

And suddenly - out of nowhere - comes #4, defender Carlos Alberto Torres, screaming down the right side of the field to rocket it into the left corner.
I asked Carlos Alberto how far he raced to get that pass: 80 meters, he figures. “ZOOOOP!” he said. “Like an airplane!”
He told me, the team had practiced this play. ”Ninety percent of people in the world who really understand football consider this one of the most sublime moments,” Carlos Alberto said: not his shot on goal, but the entire construction of the team play. Nine Brazilian players touched the ball before that goal.

The cats of Rio! At first I saw two, then I saw fifty. Unlike feral cats I’ve seen in other places, these little guys looked pretty well cared for. I tried to get a few better shots, but then a nice woman came over to tell me I was likely to get robbed of my camera by children.
