You were sitting at your lunch table, alone, like you always were. The book you were reading was sprawled out in front of you as you absentmindedly ate the mediocre cafeteria food. You weren’t paying attention to your surroundings, lost in the words of the book.
Suddenly, you were startled by someone bumping into you, nearly knocking you out of your chair. You grabbed the table to steady yourself, brows furrowing as you looked for the person responsible.
“Shit, sorry,” you heard a voice before you actually saw him. You noticed long brown hair framing his face before meeting his deep brown eyes, his face showing an apologetic expression. Someone in a letterman jacket was mumbling under his breath behind him, clearly being the one who shoved him into you.
You recognized Eddie Munson immediately. How could you not? It felt like he was standing on a table and shouting to the room every damn day. You usually didn’t mind, though. It was nice that someone was trying to knock the assholes off their high horse.
You realized you were staring a bit too long, so you shook your head and cleared your throat. “No worries,” you assured him before turning back to your book.
Except, instead of walking away like you thought he would, he came around to the front of your table, ringed fingers tapping on the wood. “Aren’t you lonely here all by yourself?” He asked, not out of pity like you expected, but out of intrigue.
“Not really,” you shrugged, tapping your book. “I keep busy.”
“Can’t believe you can pay attention in here, it gets pretty loud.” He gives you a grin, gesturing to himself. “Not that I would know anything about that, of course.”
You let out a laugh at that, crossing your arms. “Of course. This is the first time I’m hearing your voice,” you joked, feeling comfortable doing so because he seemed to be aware of his behavior and not ashamed of it at all.
He leaned a bit closer, big brown eyes looking into yours like he had been waiting for this moment. “It’s the first time I’m hearing yours, though,” he notes, taking the seat across from you without asking. Usually this would annoy you, but something about him just felt… comfortable. He seemed really friendly, despite his reputation. “I wasn’t sure if you spoke,” he joked with a warm grin.
You met his grin with a smile of your own, closing your book since it seemed he was staying for a while. “Didn’t think you’d notice,” you replied, feeling a little surprised. “I’ve been told I blend in with my surroundings pretty well.”
He scoffed, resting his head in a hand as he put his elbow on the table. “With a pretty face like that? How could I not notice?” He winks, making you blush a bit. “Besides, not too many people spend their only free time reading. And you see a lot from up there,” he added, pointing above the table.
“I’ll bet,” you laughed, feeling a bit self-conscious. There was no judgment in his voice, but sometimes you were aware of how much of a loser you must look like sitting alone in the middle of the cafeteria with just a book.
He leaned over and took the book from the table, looking at the cover. “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” he read out in a dramatic voice. He looked at you with a curious gaze. “I didn’t think any classes made you read this.”
“Uh… they don’t,” you replied, eyes darting down as you stared at the table. “It’s just… for fun.”
“You read hundred year old books for fun?” He asked, tilting his head. If anyone else asked it would have sounded condescending, but he sounded almost… intrigued.
You shrugged, biting your lip nervously. “It’s stupid, I know-“
“Not stupid,” he cut you off, shaking his head. “It’s kinda cool, actually.” That made you scoff, sounding a bit ridiculous, but he continued. “Plus, it looks pretty freaky,” he added, pointing at the cover that had a picture of a distorted man on it, depicting the painting of a decrepit Dorian. “You like stuff like that?”
You opened your mouth, not quite sure how to respond to that. It sounded kind of suggestive (the so-called “freak” asking if you were into “freaky stuff”?), but he had a look on his face as if gears were turning in his head. “I mean, yeah I guess? It’s interesting to read about stuff that’s kind of… unsettling,” you explained, trying to keep in mind his comment about it being “cool” as you felt how lame you sounded.
He put the book down, sliding it back over to you. “How would you like to take that a little deeper?” He asked, his hands gesturing vaguely in the air.
You furrowed your brows, trying to hear this in a way that didn’t sound like he was coming onto you. “Sorry, what?”
He stood up, and you could feel a speech coming on. “Imagine if you will,” he started in a deep, dramatic voice as if he was making a sales pitch… or setting up a Twilight Zone episode. “A world where monsters run amok, evil beings that can only be stopped by a group of unlikely heroes, battling their way to uncover the truth and stop them before it’s too late.” He looked at you, hands moving to gesture towards you now. “Does that sound like something you’d be into?” He asked in a more normal voice.
You must have looked a bit stunned, because that’s exactly how you felt. Your mouth was slightly agape as you took in his words, trying to make sense of them. “Um, yeah, sounds cool…? Is this a book recommendation or something?”
He shook his head, sitting back down, hitting the chair with a loud thud. “Better, this is something where you are thrown into the story, changing it with any decision you make, acting out anything you can imagine,” he explained, back in his dramatic voice. “The fate of the world is in your hands; you can either save it or you can even join the side of evil if you really want. Do you accept?” He asks, looking at you expectantly.
You let out a little laugh, not a mocking one but an incredulous one. “Uh, sure?” You responded, getting caught up in the way he spoke; you’d never heard someone quite this passionate about something before.
He pumped a fist in the air, making you laugh again. “Come to Hellfire. We meet on Wednesdays, but you’ll need to work on a character first. I can help with that,” he gives you a dazzling smile, his thumb pointing to his chest. “Are you free today? I’d be happy to start right away,” he added, sounding casual, as if this was how he spent every day.
You blinked, shrugging vaguely. “Y-yeah, I’m free,” you stammered, still sounding a bit stunned.
“Cool. I’ll meet you out front after school?” He asked, starting to stand up. When you agreed, he headed back to his table, leaving you a bit dazed.
“… What just happened?” You whispered to yourself under your breath, looking over at him as he sat a few tables away from you after you just sat there confused for a few moments.
The boys at the Hellfire table seemed just as stunned that Eddie was able to convince this quiet girl who had little sparkles on her backpack to join a fantasy game which was, essentially, a club for boys that everyone called losers. Even Eddie, though he looked confident that this could only have gone positively, didn’t really foresee it working as well as it did. Suddenly, he was more excited about Hellfire than he ever felt before.

Summary: The freshman boys are surprised by someone they meet in Hellfire.

Joining a new club was always intimidating, but Dustin, Mike, and Lucas were no strangers to Dungeons & Dragons, so they weren’t as nervous as they could’ve been. They had already met Eddie, who had basically recruited them in the cafeteria a couple weeks before the campaign started. That was the scary part; nothing after that could really surprise them.
When they walked into the club room for Hellfire, they were met with basically an empty room besides Eddie, who was setting up. Various notebooks and dice sets were scattered around the table, indicating that people dropped their stuff off here.
When Eddie heard the door open, he grinned and held his arms open dramatically. “Welcome to Hellfire, boys.”
Lucas and Mike tried to play it cool and not make it seem like they were the only newbies at the club, but Dustin responded with a bright, excited smile. He looked over at them enthusiastically before bounding towards the table as they followed more cautiously behind him.
“Are we early?” Mike asked, noting the lack of people in the room. He scanned over the table at everyone’s dice sets, noticing one that was a soft pink color, embellished by sparkles, that Eddie had to push out of the way to set up his DM screen since they were right next to him. Mike made a face of confusion, picking up one of the dice. “Whose-“
“Nah, you’re not early,” Eddie shrugged, cutting him off. “Everyone’s made a sort of ritual of going to the bathroom before every session. Say they don’t want to ruin the momentum once they get going, which I appreciate,” he explains, putting a hand over his heart after the last part.
The other boys were also now peeking at the sparkly dice, which is something they had never seen before. They were obviously wondering which one of the guys they had already met used that one. Mike put the die down, looking at them as if in silent conversation.
Just then, the doors to the club room were shoved open, and a girl came practically bouncing through it. “I still say we should move the club room,” she spoke, presumably to Eddie but really just to the room in general. “The bathrooms near here are disgusting.”
Eddie smiled at her, waving her off. “And I say again, this is the only room we can use.”
She came prancing over to him, a slight pouty look on her face. “You never listen to my great ideas,” she said, her voice a playful whine but clearly not serious. She was met with only an eye roll from Eddie.
The freshman boys were staring at her so hard they were practically boring holes into her. They had never considered a girl being in Hellfire, having never really seen a girl playing D&D before (other than Nancy playing with them when they were younger, but that didn’t count). But there she was, her Hellfire shirt tucked into a pink pleated skirt that definitely did not match the shirt or the thick ring that she was wearing as a necklace that bounced whenever she walked.
She noticed them now, smiling brightly at them. “Oh, it’s always so exciting when new people join the campaign!” She exclaimed, clapping her hands together before skipping over to them and introducing herself. The boys introduced themselves hesitantly.
“Right!” She clapped her hands, turning towards Eddie again and making her way back to him, putting her hand on his shoulder. “I left one of my textbooks in my last class. Don’t start without me.”
“What do you take me for?” He asked in faux-offense, ruffling her hair. “I’d never start without you. Hurry up, though. You know how cranky the guys get if we start late.”
She gave his shoulder a pat before leaving the room in a rush, her hair bouncing inside her sparkly scrunchie with every stride she took. All of the freshman boys just stood there for a moment, stunned.
Dustin was the first to break the silence. “… You have a Disney Princess in this club?” He asked Eddie in a joking tone.
Eddie snorted a laugh. “Yeah, you won’t think that when you’re playing with her,” he assured them, assuming his position at the head of the table. “Don’t count her out just because she’s a girl. She’s ruthless.”
Any further prodding was cut off by the rest of the club members entering. They scanned the room, waving to the mostly-new faces before turning to Eddie. “Where’s-“
“She forgot something in her last class,” Eddie explained immediately. When he heard the groans that immediately left their mouths, Eddie shook his head. “She’ll be back any minute, and if you complain I won’t be half as nice if you have to leave the room before our session.”
“You wouldn’t be half as nice to us anyway,” one of the boys grumbled, sitting down at his spot at the table. “We’re not your favorites.”
“Hey,” Eddie pointed a finger at him. “I don’t play favorites. I’m very fair.” His comment was just met with an eye roll before the doors opened again, almost as if on cue.
“Sorry, guys!” The girl came bounding over to the table, reaching for her bag and shoving her newly acquired textbook into it. “I’m good now. Hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long.”
“Not at all,” Eddie assured her, patting her on the shoulder as she took the seat closest to him. “Everyone else just got here a minute ago,” he continued, giving them a pointed look. They just shrugged back at the two of them; they couldn’t say anything because he wasn’t wrong.
When everyone took their seats, the new boys sat at the unclaimed chairs. Eddie dimmed the lights to set the mood, crouching on his chair when he came back over, starting his theatrical introduction to the campaign.
Any anxiety about being the newbies of the group faded away as the session went on. The familiarity of the game overtook everything, and they weren’t treated any different than everyone else. Eddie wasn’t kidding about the girl they were wary about before; the sweet, cheerful girl turned into something else entirely, assuming the persona of her chaotic magic-user. They couldn’t even tell her alignment, which kind of scared them.
After the session, everyone talked excitedly, the new campaign sparking a passionate discussion between everyone. Eddie smiled to himself as he was packing everything up, obviously feeling a bit proud.
After a while, everyone started to disperse, and the three freshman boys all checked the clock, saying to Eddie that they couldn’t be late for their rides. He shrugged his shoulders, everything finally packed away. “If you ever have a problem, I can drive you home.”
“My sister stays here for the newspaper anyway,” Mike explained, inching towards the door. “So she might as well drive me. But she gets pissed if I’m late, so…” he trailed off with a wave as he backed out of the door.
“I actually have a basketball thing…” Lucas said awkwardly, as if bringing up a sport in a D&D club was a sin. “I have a friend that helps me practice for tryouts. But, yeah, I’m also late,” he slung his bag over his shoulder, throwing a “see you later” towards the room as he also left.
Eddie looked at Dustin, asking him a silent question. “Oh, no,” he shook his head. “I made Steve promise to pick me up after his shift.”
The girl looked up at him, a puzzled look on her face that mimicked Eddie’s as they looked at each other before she went back to shoving books in her backpack. “Well, offer’s always on the table if you need it,” Eddie assured him.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Dustin nodded, walking out with the only two people left in the room. When they got outside, they waved goodbye. Eddie started heading towards his van, with the girl following closely behind him.
Two of the boys from the club were still talking in the front of the parking lot, and Dustin walked over to them as he waited for Steve. He still eyed the girl as she was walking away. “Isn’t it weird to have a girl here?” He asked them.
One of them snorted. “Don’t let Eddie hear you say that. He gets mad.”
“He’s very protective of her,” the other boy agreed. “Plus, she’s been here long enough that it doesn’t feel weird anymore,” he added with a shrug.
Dustin looked over at where the two were still walking together, the thought that she had just parked near him seeming less likely of a possibility. “I guess he takes her home?”
“Well, yeah…” The boys both look at each other as if hesitant to say something before adding, “They are dating.”
Dustin’s head whipped around. “Wait, really?” He asked as he was met with nods. “Why didn’t he say anything?”
“He never tells new members at first. She gets cautious looks by new people,” one of them explained, gesturing to Dustin as an example. “He lets them get to know her first so they know that she’s not just here because she’s his girlfriend. She loves to play, and he doesn’t give her any special treatment.”
Dustin nodded in thought as Steve finally pulled up to him, seeming to remind the other boys that they needed to leave too. They waved goodbye as Dustin got in Steve’s car, noticing now that Eddie and the girl were stopped by his van, smiling at each other as they put their things in the trunk.
Steve noticed Dustin looking somewhere, his head turning to follow his eyes. He saw this girl with Eddie, standing on her tiptoes to give him a kiss, laughing as he picked her up and spun her around.
“Huh,” Steve said in slight surprise. “I’ve never seen her before.”
Dustin faced forward again, speaking sarcastically to him. “There’s a girl in this school you didn’t try to ask out?”
Steve rolled his eyes. “I don’t know everybody. Just… most people,” he shrugged.
“Are you mad because someone you called ‘the freak’ has a steady girlfriend who shares his interests while you’re still hopping from girl to girl and not finding anything of substance?” Dustin asked, his voice slightly teasing in a way that almost sounded condescending.
Steve put the car into drive, looking out the windshield as he sighed. “I don’t have to drive you home. I could leave you here,” he deadpanned, even though he was already driving away.
That first session was the only one that had any kind of uneasy feelings. The boys soon fit in perfectly with the rest of the club, talking with them easily every day now. They were very lucky to find friends that were so accepting when they just started high school, and a club they could look forward to every week.

Summary: Jason gets very protective when the person he’s dating is the victim of a fear toxin attack.

You’ve heard of people being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but you never thought you’d be one of them. Unfortunately, you had decided to go to the store at the same time Scarecrow decided he was going to unleash fear toxin across the same store. It spread so fast, you didn’t even have time to react before you were curled up on the floor, seeing awful visions of your biggest fears.
When the alert went off, all of the Bats were on the case immediately. The one who was closest to the location was Jason, who had no problem barreling into the store to go after Scarecrow. He was used to going in guns a-blazing, usually to the dismay of the rest of the team.
He was stopped in his tracks, however, when he spotted you passed out on the floor.
A fire ignited in him, his eyes wide with anger. After he did a once-over of the place to make sure Scarecrow wasn’t there anymore, he spoke to everyone on the comms. “Scarecrow’s gone. Whoever’s closest needs to come here and do damage control,” he practically growled as he was picking you up off the floor.
“Why can’t you-“ he started to hear someone ask before he turned off his comms, moving quickly with almost panicked fervor. He made it to the Batcave in record time, keeping you securely in his arms the whole time.
Bruce whirled around from his spot in front of the Batcomputer. “Jason, what are you doing, you should have been helping-“
Jason set your unconscious body on a half-empty table, speaking hurriedly. “The antidote. I need the antidote, Bruce.” He was looking everywhere, trying to remember where everything was.
“Jason, you can’t-“ Bruce was cut off by an intense glare from Jason that seemed to say he wasn’t above killing someone if you were harmed. He pursed his lips as he found some of the antidote and gave it to Jason. “Next time, you can’t choose to help just one person because you’re close with them-“
“Yeah, yeah, save the lecture for someone who will listen,” Jason grumbled, carefully administering the antidote. He brushed some of the hair out of your face to see you still unconscious. “How long does it take to kick in?”
Bruce sighed, knowing that Jason wouldn’t be listening to any rationality about anything other than you. “At least an hour. Just make sure no one is targeting them specifically and get them home. We’ll keep an eye on them.”
That was all Jason needed to hear before he picked you up again, heading to your apartment. Once there, he did a quick perimeter check that came up empty. You weren’t specifically targeted, you were collateral damage. Jason didn’t know which one made him angrier.
He got you inside, carefully laying you in bed and tucking you under the sheets. He looked at your sleeping face, which looked a bit calmer now; he hoped the fear toxin was mostly out of your system so you weren’t seeing terrible things anymore.
He put his helmet back on and turned his comms back on. “Does anyone have eyes on Scarecrow?” When everyone had varying answers of “no,” saying that they split up to look for him and came up empty, he sighed in frustration. Barbara said he probably went into hiding because he knew they’d find him otherwise.
Jason was irate, clenching his fists as he thought of every major villain hideout. He was thinking about anyone with connections he could interrogate, and was ready for any violent acts he’d have to commit to get to him. Until…
“Jason…?” You spoke softly from your spot on the bed, your voice a meek whisper.
He whipped around, his expression immediately softening as he saw you reaching your hand out towards him, which he immediately took. “Hey, I’m here,” he assured you, giving your hand a light squeeze. “Are you okay?”
You looked down at where your hands were linked, tentatively squeezing his hand back. “Are you real?” You whispered hesitantly. Everything you just saw… you didn’t know how long you were out, but it felt like you lived a lifetime full of false memories. Fear was all you knew for that time.
He let out a shaky exhale, kneeling next to you and placing his hand on your face. “I’m real, I promise,” he reassured you, slowly stroking your cheek with his thumb. “You were attacked with a fear toxin. Whatever you saw after you got to the store wasn’t real. Until now.” He kept his hands on you, doing his best to ground you.
You looked at him, your eyes still a bit unfocused but your mind a little more at ease when he spoke so gently to you. “Did you get him?”
He sighed, standing up again when you looked a bit better. “No. He went into hiding.” He ran a hand through his hair, his mind going back to any lead he could think of. “I can think of a few places to start… I have to tell everyone in case they need an idea.”
You watched him as he spoke hurriedly to the rest of the group on his comms. He was angry. You barely would’ve been able to tell with how gently he spoke to you, but as soon as he was talking to anyone else you could see he was seething.
He turned back to you, looking like he already had one foot out the door. “You’re safe,” he spoke in a soothing tone. “You just have to sleep it off, basically. Anything still lingering in your body will be gone soon.”
He turned around as if he was about to leave before you grabbed his belt loop to stop him in his tracks. “Jason?” You whispered, meeting his gaze when he looked at you again. “… Stay?”
His entire demeanor softened at your plea. He took your hand in his, saying something to the rest of the team before taking his helmet off and tossing it to the side. “Yeah,” he breathed, sitting on the bed next to you. “I’m here. I’ll stay with you.”
You shuffled a bit so he could lay under the covers with you, taking you into his arms and letting you rest your head on his chest, the beating of his heart a soothing rhythm under your ear. “Do you want to talk about it? About what you saw?” He asked gently.
You clutched him tighter as you remembered the visions that the toxin made you see, but you determined that talking about it with him could help you. You always lent an ear when he had a flashback, and he was just as happy to let you rely on him for his support now. You told him all about the visions and your fears it tapped into. He listened with a sympathetic ear, constantly assuring you that none of that would ever actually hurt you, not as long as he was there and able to do something about it.
You felt more and more relaxed the more you talked to him, and eventually he lulled you asleep, with the assurance that he would still be right here holding you when you woke up.

Summary: The freshman boys are surprised by someone they meet in Hellfire.

Joining a new club was always intimidating, but Dustin, Mike, and Lucas were no strangers to Dungeons & Dragons, so they weren’t as nervous as they could’ve been. They had already met Eddie, who had basically recruited them in the cafeteria a couple weeks before the campaign started. That was the scary part; nothing after that could really surprise them.
When they walked into the club room for Hellfire, they were met with basically an empty room besides Eddie, who was setting up. Various notebooks and dice sets were scattered around the table, indicating that people dropped their stuff off here.
When Eddie heard the door open, he grinned and held his arms open dramatically. “Welcome to Hellfire, boys.”
Lucas and Mike tried to play it cool and not make it seem like they were the only newbies at the club, but Dustin responded with a bright, excited smile. He looked over at them enthusiastically before bounding towards the table as they followed more cautiously behind him.
“Are we early?” Mike asked, noting the lack of people in the room. He scanned over the table at everyone’s dice sets, noticing one that was a soft pink color, embellished by sparkles, that Eddie had to push out of the way to set up his DM screen since they were right next to him. Mike made a face of confusion, picking up one of the dice. “Whose-“
“Nah, you’re not early,” Eddie shrugged, cutting him off. “Everyone’s made a sort of ritual of going to the bathroom before every session. Say they don’t want to ruin the momentum once they get going, which I appreciate,” he explains, putting a hand over his heart after the last part.
The other boys were also now peeking at the sparkly dice, which is something they had never seen before. They were obviously wondering which one of the guys they had already met used that one. Mike put the die down, looking at them as if in silent conversation.
Just then, the doors to the club room were shoved open, and a girl came practically bouncing through it. “I still say we should move the club room,” she spoke, presumably to Eddie but really just to the room in general. “The bathrooms near here are disgusting.”
Eddie smiled at her, waving her off. “And I say again, this is the only room we can use.”
She came prancing over to him, a slight pouty look on her face. “You never listen to my great ideas,” she said, her voice a playful whine but clearly not serious. She was met with only an eye roll from Eddie.
The freshman boys were staring at her so hard they were practically boring holes into her. They had never considered a girl being in Hellfire, having never really seen a girl playing D&D before (other than Nancy playing with them when they were younger, but that didn’t count). But there she was, her Hellfire shirt tucked into a pink pleated skirt that definitely did not match the shirt or the thick ring that she was wearing as a necklace that bounced whenever she walked.
She noticed them now, smiling brightly at them. “Oh, it’s always so exciting when new people join the campaign!” She exclaimed, clapping her hands together before skipping over to them and introducing herself. The boys introduced themselves hesitantly.
“Right!” She clapped her hands, turning towards Eddie again and making her way back to him, putting her hand on his shoulder. “I left one of my textbooks in my last class. Don’t start without me.”
“What do you take me for?” He asked in faux-offense, ruffling her hair. “I’d never start without you. Hurry up, though. You know how cranky the guys get if we start late.”
She gave his shoulder a pat before leaving the room in a rush, her hair bouncing inside her sparkly scrunchie with every stride she took. All of the freshman boys just stood there for a moment, stunned.
Dustin was the first to break the silence. “… You have a Disney Princess in this club?” He asked Eddie in a joking tone.
Eddie snorted a laugh. “Yeah, you won’t think that when you’re playing with her,” he assured them, assuming his position at the head of the table. “Don’t count her out just because she’s a girl. She’s ruthless.”
Any further prodding was cut off by the rest of the club members entering. They scanned the room, waving to the mostly-new faces before turning to Eddie. “Where’s-“
“She forgot something in her last class,” Eddie explained immediately. When he heard the groans that immediately left their mouths, Eddie shook his head. “She’ll be back any minute, and if you complain I won’t be half as nice if you have to leave the room before our session.”
“You wouldn’t be half as nice to us anyway,” one of the boys grumbled, sitting down at his spot at the table. “We’re not your favorites.”
“Hey,” Eddie pointed a finger at him. “I don’t play favorites. I’m very fair.” His comment was just met with an eye roll before the doors opened again, almost as if on cue.
“Sorry, guys!” The girl came bounding over to the table, reaching for her bag and shoving her newly acquired textbook into it. “I’m good now. Hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long.”
“Not at all,” Eddie assured her, patting her on the shoulder as she took the seat closest to him. “Everyone else just got here a minute ago,” he continued, giving them a pointed look. They just shrugged back at the two of them; they couldn’t say anything because he wasn’t wrong.
When everyone took their seats, the new boys sat at the unclaimed chairs. Eddie dimmed the lights to set the mood, crouching on his chair when he came back over, starting his theatrical introduction to the campaign.
Any anxiety about being the newbies of the group faded away as the session went on. The familiarity of the game overtook everything, and they weren’t treated any different than everyone else. Eddie wasn’t kidding about the girl they were wary about before; the sweet, cheerful girl turned into something else entirely, assuming the persona of her chaotic magic-user. They couldn’t even tell her alignment, which kind of scared them.
After the session, everyone talked excitedly, the new campaign sparking a passionate discussion between everyone. Eddie smiled to himself as he was packing everything up, obviously feeling a bit proud.
After a while, everyone started to disperse, and the three freshman boys all checked the clock, saying to Eddie that they couldn’t be late for their rides. He shrugged his shoulders, everything finally packed away. “If you ever have a problem, I can drive you home.”
“My sister stays here for the newspaper anyway,” Mike explained, inching towards the door. “So she might as well drive me. But she gets pissed if I’m late, so…” he trailed off with a wave as he backed out of the door.
“I actually have a basketball thing…” Lucas said awkwardly, as if bringing up a sport in a D&D club was a sin. “I have a friend that helps me practice for tryouts. But, yeah, I’m also late,” he slung his bag over his shoulder, throwing a “see you later” towards the room as he also left.
Eddie looked at Dustin, asking him a silent question. “Oh, no,” he shook his head. “I made Steve promise to pick me up after his shift.”
The girl looked up at him, a puzzled look on her face that mimicked Eddie’s as they looked at each other before she went back to shoving books in her backpack. “Well, offer’s always on the table if you need it,” Eddie assured him.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Dustin nodded, walking out with the only two people left in the room. When they got outside, they waved goodbye. Eddie started heading towards his van, with the girl following closely behind him.
Two of the boys from the club were still talking in the front of the parking lot, and Dustin walked over to them as he waited for Steve. He still eyed the girl as she was walking away. “Isn’t it weird to have a girl here?” He asked them.
One of them snorted. “Don’t let Eddie hear you say that. He gets mad.”
“He’s very protective of her,” the other boy agreed. “Plus, she’s been here long enough that it doesn’t feel weird anymore,” he added with a shrug.
Dustin looked over at where the two were still walking together, the thought that she had just parked near him seeming less likely of a possibility. “I guess he takes her home?”
“Well, yeah…” The boys both look at each other as if hesitant to say something before adding, “They are dating.”
Dustin’s head whipped around. “Wait, really?” He asked as he was met with nods. “Why didn’t he say anything?”
“He never tells new members at first. She gets cautious looks by new people,” one of them explained, gesturing to Dustin as an example. “He lets them get to know her first so they know that she’s not just here because she’s his girlfriend. She loves to play, and he doesn’t give her any special treatment.”
Dustin nodded in thought as Steve finally pulled up to him, seeming to remind the other boys that they needed to leave too. They waved goodbye as Dustin got in Steve’s car, noticing now that Eddie and the girl were stopped by his van, smiling at each other as they put their things in the trunk.
Steve noticed Dustin looking somewhere, his head turning to follow his eyes. He saw this girl with Eddie, standing on her tiptoes to give him a kiss, laughing as he picked her up and spun her around.
“Huh,” Steve said in slight surprise. “I’ve never seen her before.”
Dustin faced forward again, speaking sarcastically to him. “There’s a girl in this school you didn’t try to ask out?”
Steve rolled his eyes. “I don’t know everybody. Just… most people,” he shrugged.
“Are you mad because someone you called ‘the freak’ has a steady girlfriend who shares his interests while you’re still hopping from girl to girl and not finding anything of substance?” Dustin asked, his voice slightly teasing in a way that almost sounded condescending.
Steve put the car into drive, looking out the windshield as he sighed. “I don’t have to drive you home. I could leave you here,” he deadpanned, even though he was already driving away.
That first session was the only one that had any kind of uneasy feelings. The boys soon fit in perfectly with the rest of the club, talking with them easily every day now. They were very lucky to find friends that were so accepting when they just started high school, and a club they could look forward to every week.

Summary: It’s a cold October day and the Hellfire Club decided to go to a pumpkin patch.

The idea of going pumpkin picking was fun, in theory. The reality was that being outside in the middle of October was a horrible idea. Despite the fact that it was just warm yesterday, there was an autumnal chill in the air today. Unfortunately for you, you had chosen your outfit based on yesterday’s weather, deciding that just a t-shirt and jeans would suffice.
You were trying not to let the rest of the group notice your teeth chattering in the middle of the pumpkin patch, trying to subtly shake out your limbs to warm them up. It was kind of a last minute decision for everyone in Hellfire to go pumpkin picking, but, well, nerds were always known for loving Halloween.
While everyone else was focused on finding the perfect pumpkin for carving, Eddie noticed you bouncing up and down and rubbing your arms. He smirked, walking over to you. “I told you it was going to be cold.”
You groaned, breathing erratically in hopes that it would somehow warm you up. “In my defense, you usually aren’t right.”
He put a hand on his chest, feigning hurt. “I didn’t know you thought so little of me,” he replied dramatically. “And anyway, I was right today.”
“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean you’re always going to be right,” you shrug, a hint of a teasing smile on your face. “It was a safer bet to assume you’d be wrong.”
“Oh yeah,” he deadpanned, gesturing to your shivering form. “Real safe bet. You look like you’re nice and toasty over there.”
You gave him a smile that was mostly a grimace. “Oh, you know it. I’m g-great,” you managed to get out as your teeth started chattering again.
He chuckled, crossing his arms. “Y’know, I could help ya… but if you don’t have a problem?” He shrugged, a smirk on his face. “You’d have to admit you’re cold.”
“Ugh…” you rolled your eyes, letting out a dramatic groan. “… Fine. I admit defeat. I’m cold.”
He came over and ruffled your hair before starting to shrug his jacket off. “Here,” he said, walking behind you. “Have my jacket. Just take care of ‘er.”
You felt him wrap the jacket around your shoulders, cutting off your instinctive protest as you felt immense heat radiating off the inside of the jacket. “Jesus,” you mumbled as you slid your arms in the leather sleeves. “You were this warm the whole time? I think you took all the heat from my body, Eddie.”
He chuckled as you turned around, shrugging. “Gets hot under there sometimes. I’ll be good without it for a while.” He bowed towards you and gestured dramatically. “I am willing to donate for a worthy cause.”
You laughed, playfully punching his shoulder. “Just for a bit. I’m sure it’ll be nice and cold when I give it back to you and then you can reheat it with your abnormally temperatured body,” you tease, practically disappearing under the jacket.
“You calling me hot?” He asked with a wink in response, ducking when you went to hit him again. “Alright, alright, no more of that. Everyone else is already done,” he continued, gesturing to everyone else walking towards you, pumpkin in hand, eyeing you skeptically as you stood next to Eddie wearing his jacket.
“Sorry, guys…” You smiled sheepishly, shrugging and not commenting on anything else. “Go ahead, we’ll meet you up there in a few minutes.”
Everyone hesitated before starting for the counter to buy the pumpkins. You heard some grumbles about favoritism, making you stifle a giggle.
It wasn’t too long before you and Eddie joined everyone else, pumpkins in hand. Everyone filed into Eddie’s van and eventually set up in a circle at the trailer park, carving lopsided designs into their pumpkins as they fell into natural conversation, usually about the campaign. Eddie’s reactions to everyone’s strategizing were very worrying for the sake of everyone’s characters. Every time he said something ominous you threatened to not give Eddie his jacket back unless you thought your character was safe. More than anything, it was a nice afternoon spent bonding with your friends. It was mostly worth braving the chilly fall air.

Summary: On a particularly rainy day, you find a bookstore you've never seen before so you decide to stop and shop!
You found a new small town bookstore that seemed cozy and got you away from the rain, so you decided to go and have a look inside. Seeing the muscular and gorgeous man behind the front counter, you ducked into one of the aisles to blush and stare at books. You hoped he didn’t see you, it was probably embarrassing to–
“‘Scuse me, sorry…” You heard a deep voice say from behind you, seeing the man from behind the counter when you turned to look. He smiled sheepishly as he shelved one of the many books in his hand. “So sorry, didn’t mean to interrupt you, sometimes I borrow from the stock to read.” He paused to push up his glasses, and you briefly caught his name on the tag. Clark, a nice name for a nice guy.
You made a point to look back up at his face, to pay attention to what he was saying. “Let me know if you need anything, okay?” He gave you a grin that made butterflies flutter in your chest before walking off again toward the counter. You watched him go, fighting back a schoolgirl-esque giggle as you did. Not only was he hot, his smile was like a literal ray of sunshine. It could brighten up a room literally and figuratively.
You had to stop yourself, you were getting too worked up over some bookshop guy you literally just met. Even though you knew his name, he definitely didn’t know yours! You had to start getting a grip, so you just went about looking around the store. You found a beautiful edition of one of your favorite books, The Princess Bride, as well as a few other romance novels you’d been meaning to read. After you had a fairly decent stack that your wallet would definitely disagree with, you walked up to the counter where Clark sat reading. You tried to peek at the cover as you walked up, but he shut it too quickly. You didn’t have time to be disappointed before he was beaming at you brightly.
“Hey there!” He greeted, glancing briefly down at the stack in your hands then back up at you, “you all set with those?”
You nodded and handed them to you, and he seemed to approve as he looked through them.
“These are pretty good finds…have you read any of them before?” He asked with a genuine interest as he wrote down each one, starting with The Princess Bride.
“Only this one, it’s my favorite and this was a really nice edition. The rest I’ve been meaning to read for a while now.” You gestured to the book at the top of the stack, moving your hands about as you talked animatedly.
“Really?? Why’s it your favorite?” Clark questioned, leaning forward onto his hand with the book stacked to the side. No one else was really in the store beside the two of you, so you figured he must be bored and that’s why he was taking such an interest in you…but then again, he really did seem nice.
Without thinking too much more about it, you continued on uninterrupted, “Well, the undying love that Buttercup and Westley have, of course. She thought he died and remained faithful to him, while he did everything in his power on the Dread Pirate Roberts’ ship and all throughout the actual book’s plot to get her back. It’s one of the truest representations of the classic tale that is true love I’ve ever seen that’s also really witty and fun to read. It’s just an all around good time, and I highly recommend it, though I don’t know if reading the book is for everyone. It's funny but some of the jokes take a certain kind of humor to really land.” The entire time you were talking, he was staring at you like you had hung the moon itself. It made you blush when you realized, since no one else had ever looked at you like that, like you were so special that anything you said was worth everything in the world. Beautiful enough to stare at forever. It made you feel a bit warm inside, especially considering how genuinely he seemed to feel that way. “Sorry, I don’t mean to talk your ear off,” you stopped your own ramble as you paid for your books, reaching to pick them up off the counter when you felt his hand brush against yours to stop you.
“No, it’s really alright. I…I like hearing you talk about it. Maybe we could talk more about books and true love together some other time? I love hearing people talk about what they love most, and, as cliche as it sounds, I love love. The Princess Bride is one of my favorites, too, and I’ve never heard anyone talk about it. At least, not the way you do.” Clark spoke intimately, as if you were the only one that was ever meant to hear these words as he gently intertwined your hands over the cover.
“I’d um, I’d really like that. When would you want to do that?” You felt almost out of breath as you whispered the words, staring into his sparkling blue eyes as you eagerly awaited his response.
“I get off my shift in…” He tilted his head to look at a clock behind your head, somewhat resembling a puppy in that way before turning his attention back to you with his blinding smile, “two hours? Is that okay with you?” Clark questioned, his hand still holding yours with a gentleness you didn’t expect from someone so muscular.
“Absolutely! Lemme give you my number,” You offered, taking the receipt and writing the digits on the back of it before handing it over to him.
He flashed his sparkling smile again before texting you with it to make sure that not only did he have the right number, but you had his. You waved your goodbyes to him afterwards, leaving the bookstore to go about your day for the next few hours. The two of you texted the entire time, flirting and recommending books to each other until you met up at a coffee shop after his shift.
That first date led to many, many more and the two of you happily spent your time either in the bookstore (which you quickly found out that he owned) or at his apartment, reading classic romance novels and gushing together. Your first impression of him also turned out to be correct, and he had the personality of a golden retriever. Just looking at him sometimes, you’d escape the rain in his store any day.

Summary: Jason comes home from patrol to find you after committing one of the most HEINOUS crimes...stealing a hoodie
You were sitting on the couch, half falling asleep as you waited for Jason to get back wrapped in a familiar red fabric. You were almost completely out when you heard a soft thunk somewhere near the window.
You opened your eyes and turned your head, seeing him standing up from climbing in from the fire escape. To anyone else, he would’ve looked like a creature from a horror movie, his eyes glimmering in the dark as he stood in the moonlight. But to you, he looked like Jason and he always would. You got off the couch when you made eye contact with him, shuffling over to him and pushing his hood back away from his face. He was smirking when his face was finally revealed, tugging at the sleeve of the hoodie.
“Is that my hoodie?” He chuckled as he inspected it, specifically the cuffs of the sleeves that were a bit ripped up. This one of the only ones of his hoodies that still had sleeves, that’s why he didn’t immediately recognize it.
“...no?” You tried, smiling up at him as innocently as you could and hiding your hands behind your back as you stepped away. You’re practically drowning in the thing since he was taller, but you always wore oversized hoodies so that shouldn’t give you away, right?
“You never wear red. In fact,” Jason stepped closer, taking both of your hands in his as he eyed you with an intensity you couldn’t place. He pulled you to him, letting one arm move to your waist as he did so, “I don’t even think you like red. Do you?” He whispered near your ear, his smirk still present on his face. This was it, you had taken his hoodie and now he’d caught you literally redhanded. You tried your best to keep your cool, he hadn’t actually accused you of anything yet.
“What’re you trying to say, huh?” You taunted, trying to act like his close proximity didn’t make you want much more than just some silly argument about a hoodie of all things from him. He could take it off you right now, for all you cared.
“I’m saying that you’re a thief, and that this is my hoodie. But I’m actually kind of okay with committing crime, so you’re in luck.” Jason shrugged, gently pushing your hair away from your face as he looked into your eyes, “plus, you may or may not look pretty cute in that. I might even let you keep it, if you ask me really nicely…and we watch Pride & Prejudice & Zombies again cause Halloween’s coming up.”
“I think I could put up with this list of demands, if this was your hoodie…” You wrapped your arms around his neck thoughtfully, staring up at the ceiling with a mischievous smirk as you pretended to ponder it, “would you please let me keep it?” You pleaded with a bat of your eyelashes, tugging him closer until your foreheads were touching while he let out a long dramatic sigh.
“I guess you can, but you gotta admit to stealing it first..” He murmured, kissing you briefly before pulling away so he could hear you say it.
“Okay, fine, I stole it…happy now?” You laughed, your lips inches from his in such a way where you were basically sharing each other’s air. You wanted so badly to just close the gap between the two of you and kiss him again.
“Ecstatic. Wanna make some popcorn?” Jay grinned as he turned you around, moving with you into the kitchen because even if you didn’t want popcorn, he did and he knew you’d be damned if you denied him anything. The same went for you, of course, when you asked something of him, but you cherished and adored him more than you could ever express to him. You would give him the world if he wanted it, because he deserved it more than anything, so taking one hoodie from him wouldn’t change much.

Jason did not like to be kept inside. If it were up to him, he would still be on patrol even if half of his ribs were cracked. He didn’t give a shit about following Bruce’s rules, but…
“Absolutely not,” you pointed at Jason as you saw him eying the front door. “I’ve been given strict orders. You’re not going anywhere.”
You hadn’t been dating Jason for too long, but it was long enough that you caught him sneaking back into his apartment in his Red Hood suit and had a very serious talk about the vigilante life. It was all a bit overwhelming at first, but now that it wasn’t a secret to you anymore, it had become part of a routine. With how much it worried you, you were almost ecstatic that you were tasked with keeping Jason off the streets.
“I’m fine,” he asserted, trying to subtly back away in the direction of the door. “I’ve been doing nothing but resting, wouldn’t it be nice to get some fresh air?” He tried giving you a smile, but it looked more like a grimace.
You crossed your arms, pulling him away from the door. “You’re right, fresh air would be good. I’ll open the window.”
He groaned, knowing he wasn’t going to win this fight. He sat back on the couch, defeated. “You know, I have to go home eventually. I need to shower.”
“You can’t shower here?” You asked, sitting down next to him. “Besides, someone’s going to have to help you, and I wouldn’t want it to be anyone but me.”
He winced, subtly leaning away from you. “You don’t have to do that. I can do it myself. Thanks for the offer, though.” His voice was rushed, sounding more anxious than he ever had before.
You raised your eyebrows, crossing your arms. “I really don’t mind. It wouldn’t make me uncomfortable, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“No I-“ he started, letting out a frustrated sigh. “I just don’t want you to see me like that, okay?” he admitted reluctantly.
“Jason…” you replied, reaching your hand out to soothingly rub his back. “I know we haven’t slept together yet, but I’ve seen people’s bodies before-“
“But not mine,” he cut you off, clenching his fists in his lap. The reply seemed to catch him off guard, as if he didn’t mean to say that out loud.
You gave him a curious look, continuing to rub his back since he didn’t flinch away from your touch. “I don’t think-“
He cut you off with a sigh, putting his head in his hands. “You don’t understand, I… it’s not normal.” He wasn’t even looking at you now, just staring somewhere ahead of him. “When I came back… everything about me was different. Nothing was right.” He was starting to sound a little out of breath now, a bit of panic in his voice. “I wasn’t me anymore, and every time I look in the mirror I’m reminded that I can never be ‘normal’ again.”
You looked at him sympathetically, reaching for his hand and giving it a squeeze. “Jason… it doesn’t matter if you look a bit different. That doesn’t make me love you any less.”
“It’s not ‘a bit different,’ I look like a fucking monster,” he insisted, sounding slightly choked up before he shook it off.
“I don’t care,” you assure him, grabbing him by the shoulders. “I promise you, no matter what, I won’t judge you in any way. It won’t change how I feel about you. Just… please let me help you,” you said that last part quieter, more of a plea than anything.
He just stayed there for a moment, looking into your eyes and seeing that you were completely serious. He also felt the seriousness of his injury, and the combination of everything made him relent. “… Fine. Let’s just go before I change my mind.”
You gave him an encouraging smile, standing up and leading him to the bathroom. When he flicked the light on, he looked extremely nervous. You had honestly never seen him this hesitant before.
You took in his apprehension, trying to think of any way you could help him. So you turned the light back off, earning a confused look from Jason. “You said you don’t like looking at yourself. It’s easier to deal with that when the lights are off,” you explained.
He seemed to relax a bit, still able to see under the darkness but his body was obscured enough to ease his tension a bit. You turned around to give him some privacy as he undressed.
“I guess I didn’t really ask what you’re comfortable with,” you note as you turn on the water. “Is it okay if I get in there with-” You stop when you turn around, taking in his bare form.
He had a big Y-shaped scar on his body, presumably from an autopsy performed after he died. He had several bruises and scrapes, which inevitably comes with the territory of being a vigilante. Under all his scars was a faint radiance, adding the smallest bit of light to the room.
He was right about his body looking different than anyone else’s. But that wasn’t what gave you pause; you were just realizing that this moment was more intimate than you had ever had with him before. And, honestly, his scars weren’t the part of his body you were paying the most attention to at this moment.
But Jason didn’t know all these thoughts that were going through your head, so he just assumed that you were regretting that you agreed to this, ready to put his clothes back on. “I told you it would be too much. I don’t blame you if you-“
“No, no,” you interrupted as you saw him reaching for his clothes. “It’s not… I’m not… look, I have to be honest, you’re getting me a little hot,” you admitted, stepping closer to him and running your hands up his arms.
You could’ve sworn you saw his cheeks go a little pink in the darkness. “Hah… I guess out of everything about this, that’s not something I considered.” He shivered a bit at your touch, leaning down to bring his face closer to yours. His hands found your waist, his voice getting a bit lower. “To answer your question from earlier, I don’t mind you getting in with me, if you’re okay with it.”
You felt a bit breathless, nodding in agreement. He softly traced a line down your cheek before breaking away to get in the shower, giving you the same privacy you gave him when he undressed. You took a deep breath as you shed your clothes, letting yourself get used to the vulnerability of being completely bare.
Jason was obviously still not used to any vulnerability, his body tense and still a bit defensive as you closed the shower door behind you. “It’s okay,” you whispered soothingly, reaching out to hold his shoulders.
He still didn’t relax, obviously not fully comfortable with everything yet. He was used to being closed off and unavailable. Vulnerability wasn’t his thing.
You let out a contemplative sigh, reaching up to cup his cheek. “You’re not used to people being gentle with you, are you?”
He leaned into your touch, hesitating for a moment before shaking his head. “Well, I basically beat people up for a living. ‘Gentle’ isn’t in the job description,” he responded with a familiar sarcasm. At least he felt comfortable enough to keep his sense of humor.
You chuckled softly, stroking his cheek with your thumb. “Can you try something for me?” You asked quietly, barely loud enough to be heard over the sounds of the shower. “Can you sit under the water?”
He looked at you quizzically. “You want me to sit?” He sounded a bit skeptical.
“Yeah,” you nodded, turning him around so he was under the running water. “Just… humor me?”
He hesitated for a moment before sitting down, looking up at you and shrugging. “Okay, now what?”
You stood under the water behind him, reaching for the shampoo. “Just relax,” you whispered, starting to lather it in his hair, your nails lightly scratching his scalp.
His body finally seemed to relax a bit, his head resting against your stomach. “That… feels nice,” he admitted, practically melting against you now.
You smiled, your hands continuing their slow movements. “There, not so bad, right?” You ask quietly, lathering some soap in your hands as you reach down to massage his shoulders. “You can be vulnerable with me. I’ve got you.”
He closed his eyes, your touch sending pleasant shivers down his spine. “… Yeah. I’m starting to believe that,” he replied honestly.
You stayed like that for a while, washing him and letting him feel your comforting touch until the water started getting cold. He stood up, seemingly reluctant to get out, frowning when you turned the water off. “Hey… do you think we can do this more often?”
You smiled, pulling him into a hug and wrapping a towel around the both of you. “Whenever you want,” you agreed, resting your head on his chest.
That night seemed to change something between you, your relationship starting to become deeper. Jason was more open with you now, finally letting you in and showing emotion. Every night ended with you in his arms, showing you the same softness you showed him that night.
