i love putting my book characters into these random pinterest pictures
i want to write gut-wrenching angst but i keep getting distracted by my cat sleeping against my leg he's so cute. i can't write angst in those conditions. someone help me
I got to do an art trade with the wonderfully talented @joannascribblesfallout and she graciously gave me a piece that illustrates a scene I always had in my head between Kat and Nick, but sadly never made it into the actual story. I genuinely love this drawing so much and so in honor I have written out the scene as its own little vignette.
Also please go check out Joanna’s art. It’s legitimately so beautiful.
(Cw, mentions of child death.)

Out of Context -- Tag Game
Thanks @meiyohakobune for the tag.
Rules: share a line from your story with zero context.
Since i have Morning Stars complete, i will share a line both from it and from its sequel, Super Nova.
Some out of context lines about the villain, Dexter Grum, and his twisted relationship with protagonist, Harvie Coin.
Morning Stars -
Harvie hated Dexter Grum.
Super Nova -
They flew the ship. They drank. They ran another load. She didn’t think about Dexter. She went out of her way to never think of Dexter again. That was it.
Life was simple then. It was complicated now.

Tips for writing flash fiction*ੈ✩‧₊˚
☆ Start in Media Res: You do not have time for long setups and backstories. Dive directly into the action or a moment after the conflict has occurred.
☆ Focus on one moment: Flash fiction is like a photograph or a single snapshot. It doesn't have room for a sprawling narrative.
☆ Limit characters: One or two is a enough. You don't have the word count to build a whole cast.
☆ Work on your title: Your title carries weight and sets expectations. "The War on the Moon" tells the reader a lot before the story even begins.
☆ Imply Imply Imply: Flash fiction is like an iceberg—you only have to write the 'tip' and allow your readers' imagination to fill in the rest.
☆ The Beginning and the End: Your readers should be intrigued. The opening line should make the stroke their chins and the ending should make their eyebrows raise.
☆ Draft without fear: Write the first version focusing entirely on getting the sequence of events and emotion down. Don't worry about the word count or making it perfect yet.
☆ Edit mercilessly: Go through your draft and eliminate adjectives, adverbs, and redundant exposition. In flash fiction, every word counts.
☆ Experimentation of Ideas: The great thing about flash fiction is that, because it's so short, you can experiment with different ideas with almost comically low stakes . You can write in a different genre than you're used to or try a weird new format (a hermit crab story) or try to write a story in just a hundred words (a drabble). The sky ain't the limit.
Stagnant
Here she was, again. Look at her, ruining everything once again. She knew not to upset them, and so she went still.
What did she do this time? No one has a clue on that, but she couldn't say anything. Stay silent, she could only repeat to herself. She knew not to bring attention to herself, and so she went still.
How is she doing? They wanted to check up on her, after months of silence. After all those months, not a peep would be heard. Suddenly, they began to get frustrated. She knew not to upset them, but she ended doing exactly that. To avoid further trouble, she went still.
And so, here she is again. What else can she do? She stayed quiet. She stood still. She never bothered anyone. She was the perfect version she thought everyone would've wanted.
But instead, it was met with more frustration from the inside, and outside. Nothing was enough. And she knew that. But she couldn't say anything. All she wanted was to run. But she couldn't.
To pretend that she was happy with her life, she kept quiet, and stood still.
In order to not ruin things further, in order to not make them angry, she stood still.
And that's all she ever did.
Because that's all she could do.
