Trigger is the type of anime producer that is immediately identifiable in their work. That is good and bad. Good in something like Space Patrol Luluco where Trigger’s over-the-top nature plays well into the normal-abnormal dichotomy and Luluco’s struggle. In, Kiznaiver, however, I feel the Trigger-isms are at odds with the story. The Trigger aesthetic works alright - the focus on reds, the flatter tones, and high-contrasting color palettes. The other little lingerings, though, like weird special effects noises playing for comedy (bike horns, etc) and the character’s behaviors being more at home in Kill la Kill than in the more “realistic” world of Kiznaiver.
There are some good beats of drama, though. The Maki arc is effecting, but it is juxtaposed in my mind with literally everyone else who doesn’t develop. We are told they are, but they don’t.
Gentle spoilers below the break. (6/10 watch it if you have a lazy Sunday to marathon it)
Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto/Sakamoto desu ga?
Moving into the present, today, we look at Sakamoto desu ga? Sakamoto is a currently-airing anime based off a completed manga of the same name that focuses on the titular Sakamoto - a first year student who has it all. In short, watch it. It is great and on Crunchyroll (I think, CR is down for me right now, but I remember seeing it there).
“Retro”rec - Amagi Brilliant Park
Based on the fact that MAL’s rating for Amagi Brilliant Park is based on 104 thousand ratings, I’ll won’t pretend this is a hidden gen or anything of the sort, but, if it is sitting in your backlog, I’d encourage you to advance up the list.
Where I’m at now. I occasionally hit up older “old hold” stuff, but this season is keeping me pretty content.
Inaugural posting of what I’ve watched over the last few seasons with ratings. Now, in a time of new age-y “video game review scores” where anything below a 7 is unheard of, I am maintaining an equal weight. So, a five is perfectly serviceable and average.
Program used: Taiga (taiga.moe) - nifty (Windows-only) program that tracks what you watch automatically with Crunchyroll support (if I that is your thing) using a MAL or Hummingbird account. Requires a MyAnimeList or Hummingbird account. Great for keeping track of where you are and tells you when new episodes air (and can download the episodes automatically if your nautically inclined).
Sure am glad this isn’t a .gif. It would be awful. @sexyclaudius
