The Torbay Express por Graham Hutton Por Flickr: Southern Railway Bulleid Light Pacific ‘Battle of Britain’ class No. 34067 'Tangmere’ storms along the Dawlish sea wall, at Marine Parade, just before entering Kennaway Tunnel with a 'Torbay Express’ special from the 2008 mainline steam season. 21st September 2008
York 22nd April 1973 por loose_grip_99 Por Flickr: At York LNER A4 4-6-2 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley lays down a smokescreen as it departs the sharply curved platform for Scarborough with Train A of the City of York Steam Festival running directly via Malton. Train B behind 60019 Bittern ran via Hull. Track rationalisation was ongoing in 1973 & the former goods lines that ran around the back of the station to the west and their direct connection with the Scarborough line were being removed. The partially removed pointwork is seen in the foreground of this shot.
Middleton Railway Leeds 4th May 2026 por loose_grip_99 Por Flickr: Another shot from my first visit to the first ever railway to require an Act of Parliament to build it in 1758 and the first railway to successfully use steam locomotives in 1812. The Middleton Railway is the world’s oldest continuously working railway and has been worked by volunteers since 1960. It was originally a colliery railway carrying coal to staithes on the river Aire. Now it is a 1 mile heritage line and today Hunslet 0-6-0ST Brookes No 1 was in charge of the 3 coach train, seen here departing from the northern terminus.
May Day, 2026 por James Belmont Por Flickr: With 10,689 ft. Loafer Mountain of the Wasatch Range as a backdrop, RMRX 8021 leads the Canyon Spirit luxury cruise train east through Rio, Utah on Union Pacific’s Provo Subdivision. The 8021 has an interesting history for common freight locomotive. It began life as a 3000 HP GP40, built by EMD in January 1967 for the Seaboard Air Line as SAL 638. After a series of railroad mergers, it would become Seaboard Coast Line 1553, Seaboard System 6708, and Chessie System 6708. It would enter a lease feet becoming Helm Leasing 4001, and sold to a short line operator as Indiana & Ohio Railway 4023. The humble rebuilt GP40-3 began its current assignment when acquired by the Rocky Mountaineer folks, becoming RMRX 8021. Credit to Schon Norris for 8021’s ancestry.
Rumbling through the canyon por Mike Danneman Por Flickr: A Montana Rail Link ballast train rumbles through scenic Jefferson River Canyon between Sappington and Whitehall, Montana, on June 26, 2019. Led by SD45 No. 346, the train running on MRL’s Fifth Subdivision and is headed for loading at the pit west of Pipestone on the Spire Rock Industrial Track.
Swanley Kent 15th May 2026 por loose_grip_99 Por Flickr: The Belmond Pullman regularly runs from London Victoria to London Victoria via Dover. Today we happened to be in the area so made a detour to Swanley station to grab a few shots of Bulleid Merchant Navy pacific 35028 Clan Line heading east. In full sunlight Clan Line is in Golden Arrow regalia with whistle blowing at 11.47 running 4 minutes down. Seen at the Greatest Gathering in Derby in August 2025 but the last time I actually saw her running on the main line was in 1977! Obviously mainline steam has become very commonplace these days because there was no-one else here taking photos of this fine sight.
