A glorious day at Stanage

Spent yesterday at the Stanage plantation with my old man to take advantage of the cold, crisp weather and brilliant conditions.  After a good brew on the Plantation car park, we headed up with the aim of doing Captain Hook 7B.  I'd tried this problem back in November and was getting stuck going over the nose.  Since then, due to a pretty poor winter, I haven't been out and this was my first chance to get back on it.  I recalled the starting sequence pretty quickly but again; it was a bit hit and miss getting over the nose.  I got the sloper next to the pocket once but then came off the top out which seems to be widely regarded as harder then the roof itself.  I then got some good beta for a Grit Guru, who told me to try putting my toe in the sidepull next to my hand.  First try this worked really well and felt super stable.  With a bit of thrutching over the nose I managed to top it out and I was really psyched to have done my first 7B on grit.     

After this I went to try Help the Young 7A+ but was getting nowhere on the jump start to the poor edge so I soon gave up and decided to save it for another day.  I then did a flash repeat of The Green Traverse 7A which I was happy with as I didn't make quite as much of a hash of the final moves as last time.  I then did Pebble Arête 6A and a few other easy problems of The Pebble Boulder to warm down.  

All in all, a pretty good day.

The polarisation between the claim that ‘the riots are a response to unemployment and wasted lives’ and the insistence ‘the violence constitutes mere criminality’ makes little sense. There is clearly more to the riots than simple random hooliganism. But that does not mean that the riots, as many have claimed, are protests against disenfranchisement, social exclusion and wasted lives. In fact, it’s precisely because of disenfranchisement, social exclusion and wasted lives that these are not ‘protests’ in any meaningful sense, but a mixture of incoherent rage, gang thuggery and teenage mayhem. Disengaged not just from the political process (largely because politicians, especially those on the left, have disengaged from them), there is a generation (in fact more than a generation) with no focus for their anger and resentment, no sense that they can change society and no reason to feel responsible for the consequences of their actions. That is very different from suggesting that the riots were caused by, a response to, or a protest against, unemployment, austerity and the cuts.

Parisella's cave

Went to Parisella's cave yesterday and has a really good days climbing despite not doing my problems and ruining my fingers but more on that later.  Started off by on-sighting the Cave Right-hand (V4) which is good but powerful little problem which starts on jugs and then works it's way up to some poor crimps.  Then tried Beaver right-hand (V5) but could't reach the slopey crimp from the side pull.  Not really sure what i was doing wrong, probably just a lack of commitment.  Proceeded onto Lipstick (V6) but again couldn't go from the same side pull as on BRH to the high pinch.  Then the real trouble started.  Began working Clever Beaver (V7) which goes from a juggy break to a very sharp undercut and then launch to a sloper and a powerful throw to the final jug.  Took me a while to figure out how to hold the swing but once I'd figured out the foot placements and which uncut to come into I had it sussed.  Unfortunately the first undercut you use gave me a huge flapper even with tape on. I then proceeded to get another FOUR flappers, two of which were on my tips. So after bandaging myself up with tape and plasters (very kindly given to me by the nice lady at the Parisella's Cafe) and 3 hours of trying I managed to send it with a fairly large amount of difficulty but I imagine it would be easier without being covered in tape.  That was pretty much my day over with then and I headed home after warming down on the last few metres of Left wall traverse.

All in all, however, I had a brilliant day and confirmed to myself I've improved recently and the v7 and 8 I did a few months ago at The Bowderstone weren't flukes.
