CSJJ Day 26: The Very Long, Very Unexpected Day

Killian Jones is having himself quite a day in Storybrooke. (Canon-compliant)

Killian jolted awake, the blessed darkness of sleep disrupted by what Emma had once informed him was an ‘epic guitar riff’. He groaned, rolling over in their large bed to reach for his phone on the nightstand. He tried to temper his reflex agitation at being abruptly woken up, knowing from the particular tone blaring from the device that it was his Swan on the other end.

“Love…” he mumbled gruffly into the phone, flopping onto his back and blinking up at their bedroom ceiling.

“Hey, babe.” Emma answered softly. “Sorry to wake you.”

He pulled in a deep breath and rubbed at the top of his head with the blunted end of his wrist. “S’okay… He yawned and started to sit up. “What’s going on?”

“It’s nothing too serious,” She reassured. “Nothing I couldn’t handle. But-” Some sort of shout from somewhere in the background cut her off and Killian frowned as Emma sighed in exasperation.

“Emma, what’s is it?”

Don’t go be an asshole just because people use Alice as CS’ daughter’s name masquerading it all with “I think it’s a rewriting of OG Killian”/”it’s forgettin about OG Killian”.

That’s dumb. Really. And it makes me almost pity you.

Also, bit of a reminder, Alice is the canon name of Killian’s mother in all his versions, much like Liam is his brother’s. Gotcha?

I don't usually get into these kind of posts (basically because I'm like a ghost here, I barely enter and it's exhausting to spend that time arguing the same things over and over again), but just to add to OPs point, if the anti-Alice and Knightrook people don't like CS naming their daughter Alice because it "erases OG Killian", why are those people not complaining when they make Henry CS' kid? I'm not talking about Killian formally adopting him, I'm saying there are fics out there in which they make Henry Killian's biological son.

News alert, everyone, that's not how it works. Henry is and always will be Neal's son, even if you don't like him. When you take one of the parents out of the equation, the kid ceases to exist. Is what would have happened with Emma in the season 3 finale if Snow had actually died, or if her parents hadn't met. She herself says it "I'm still here. If Snow died it means I would have never been born". I've read more than one fic in which they make Henry Killian's son and they only change his eye colour to match Killian's; everything else is still the same as canon Henry Mills. I haven't seen any "purist" csers complain about them erasing Neal. In fact, I've seen people applaud that. The hypocrisy of them is astounding.

But it's not the same as just naming a kid after her grandmother. Because no matter how much they scream and try to deny it: both OG and Wish versions of Killian have the same mother, Alice Jones. It wouldn't have been such a stretch to imagine CS also naming their daughter Alice in s7. It makes perfect sense.

CSJJ Day 25: Ghosts of NYE Past

CS Modern AU

“Keep thinking that, sweetheart. But tonight, you’re going to be shown things you don’t want to see, and you’re going to be forced to feel things you haven’t felt for a long time…” Emma tilts her head in question and Regina smirks. “Feelings.”

Shaking her head, Emma backs away and cries out, “This is absolutely ridiculous! Plus, even if I did believe you—which I don’t, I’m not that much of an asshole to the people in my life… you don’t need to Scrooge me! Besides, it’s New Years, not Christmas.”

Ghosts of New Years Past

Four times Emma almost turns her car around, but then she pictures the disappointment that will no doubt drip from her sister’s voice when she eventually calls to tell her, and she continues. It’s really not until she reaches the ‘Welcome to Storybrooke’ sign that her stomach starts to knot, but luckily, the giggles coming from her son in the back seat distract her.

“Mom, look! We’re almost there!”

With a sigh, she looks into the rearview mirror and smiles, “Yeah, kid, we are.”

Emma rolled her eyes and nudged at her brother’s side with the arm squished between their two bodies. It had been a question he’d repeatedly asked her since he’d first brought up the rather unconventional idea.

“Like I’ve told you a million times already, big brother…” She sighed and glanced to her right to give him a slightly impatient look before returning her attention to what loomed before them. “We may have lived here, but…” Emma frowned and shook her head slightly. “This place was never my home.”

Her attention drifted off to the side, where Killian was standing with Robin and Will. His messy hair was even messier than usual from where he had been running his hand through it. She giggled as he snatched at the cigarette Scarlet had just lit, watching as he turned and chucked it a good distance before scolding at his fellow Rapscallion.

“Not really.” Emma finally added to the end of her thought as she observed the man she loved give a very Vice President-like dressing down to Will.

Okay, but honestly tho? This story was just so good. Remember how I’ve told you a few times throughout this about your writing skills? You seriously have a way with words. I don’t know how you do it, but you manage to get inside my head and make me see and hear the scenes as you are describing them. Like I can even hear the actor’s voices and all, that’s how ridiculously good you are.

This story was so good, and that was the perfect ending. Thank you so much for sharing such wonderful story with us 💕

Opening the door, he moves to grab one of his jackets when the sight of black leather catches his eye. With a deep breath, he runs his hand down the leather until he feels the hole and reaches into the pocket to pull out the pocket watch.

“I swear to all the gods known to man, David,” Killian yelled as he slammed his fist against the interrogation room door harshly. “If you don’t open this fucking door right now, I’ll be giving that black eye of yours a mate!”

“Killian…” Liam admonished tiredly from where he was slouched in one of the chairs by the table. He adjusted his grip on his arm, wincing at the pain that shot up and down the appendage as the movement jostled his fresh bullet wound. “I hardly doubt any of that is helping.”

Killian turned on his brother, his eyes wild with rage. “I don’t bloody care. Somebody tries to murder us in our own home and instead of actually doing competent police work,” He yelled it over his shoulder at the still closed door, then returned his glare back on Liam. “They throw us in here like we’re the ones who committed some bloody crime.”

Pushing up from his seat, Liam winced as he walked over towards Killian. “You heard Graham,” He sighed, giving his brother a patient stare. “We’re in here out of safety.”

“Right,” Killian scoffed, looking away from Liam towards the wall where the bullpen was on the other side. He could imagine Graham was talking frantically with someone on the phone. And in his mind’s eye, he recalled that David’s door was firmly shut, which just made his anger and anxiety spike even higher. “Like these imbeciles can keep us safe…”

Liam brough his hand from his injured arm up to rest atop Killian’s shoulder. “Hey,” He waited until Killian’s gaze slowly returned to his. “We all know that’s not what this is…” He moved his hand up to rest against Killian’s neck. “You have murder in your eyes, brother.”

Chapter Nine – Hey Jude

Killian’s checking the rigging on his boat when he hears the door creak open and he looks ups to find Liam walking in. His brother holds his hand out to keep it from flying back at him, and when it doesn’t, his brow furrows. “When did you fix the door?”

Pulling the rope to make sure it’s secure, he answers, “I didn’t. Emma did.”

From the corner of his eye, he sees Liam approach with what appears to be an impressed look on his face. “She really is brilliant, isn’t she?”

(So funny story, I’ve been trying to read and liveblog this chapter since sat morning while I was on my way to a wake (I know, not the most appropriate time maybe, but I needed a freaking break, okay?), but first my phone decided to close the Tumblr app while I was like halfway through the chapter, and then I was busy the rest of the weekend, and now my phone stopped working alltogether, so yeah, it’s all going swimmingly this week. While I’m on vacation. Just brilliant. At least, now I’ve got my sister’s computer to keep doing this, but yeah, not really a good thing when it takes forever for the characters to appear while I’m writing them, right?)

Omg, he wants Graham to live with them

(Again had to stop because the computer was just driving me nuts. It’s Friday and today you’re supposed to publish the final chapter and I will have finished this by then, dammit! Even if I have to do it with my crappy phone and no gifs!)

“You don’t deserve this, you’re a good man!”

“I did deserve this,” Killian counters with a nod. “I was arrogant, and uncaring of others and their feelings. I believed things should have been handled to me because I was good looking and while I did love Milah, the second I found out she was married I should have backed off.” Shaking his head, a dark chuckle passes his lips after he mutters, “If anything, this should have happened to me sooner.”

Excuse me while I sob here for a moment, will ya.

And now they both talk about forgiving themselves, just wave me here in a corner and don’t look at me.

Oh, come on now, she doesn’t even want to go! She hasn’t packed or anything, damn it.

She’s proud of him and he’s all shy about it. Be any cuter, I dare you.

“Of course, love, your heart’s desire is alll I want.”

Hands wrapped around a warm mug of spiked tea, Killian sat quietly at the huge marble-topped island in his brother’s kitchen waiting for Emma to rejoin him. They had returned to the house after having slowly worked their way back through the storm on the bike, soaked and chilled to the bone. Elsa had ushered Emma off to the guest bedroom, giving Killian a meaningful ‘you and I are gonna talk’ look as she went.

Taking a sip from the mug, Killian snorted softly to himself. Of course they would need to talk. It seemed he was destined to have meaningful chats with all the most important people in his life. Maybe he would ring up his Pop while he waited and hash out their feelings on the affair and remarriage that had brought little Liam in their lives and sent Killian’s Ma into an early grave.

Killian lowered the mug down to the counter with a heavy thud, grabbing up the bottle of rum close by and unscrewing it quickly. He was in the middle of throwing back a shot straight from the bottle when his sister-in-law came padding into the kitchen.

“We do own glasses, you know.” She stated in a way that let him know she was scolding him, making her way towards the side of the island opposite where he sat. “In fact, looks like you’ve got a perfectly good one right there.” She gestured to the mug still steaming before him.

This is probably a stupid question, but in efbwaf did the thought go through Killian's head at all where he wondered why his baby wasn't good enough for Emma to keep, but Neal's was? I'm not saying that's a rational thought, but when so many emotions and hurts come in to play, we aren't always rational and I was just curious if that's a thought they maybe have to face at all.

It’s not a stupid question at all!! I’m actually glad you asked it!

Initially, when I was working out the general path this story was gonna take in my head, that was something that was a prominent focal point in the story - Killian feeling hurt and self-conscious about Emma not keeping their child, but keeping Neal’s. However, in the process of actually writing the fic out, that point became almost counter intuitive to the story that was taking shape. 

My original idea was to have Killian find out about Henry being Neal’s kid from Neal himself. I had initially planned for Neal to crash the bonfire and make that big reveal and it was gonna cause serious tension and strife between Emma and Killian and lead to a much more confrontational conversation between them then what ended up in Ch. 7. But… David came along and behaved in a way that 1) I never initially intended and 2) completely made me have to rework the entire second half of the story. 

There was always supposed to be tension between David and Killian. That was a big thread that I went in wanting to write, but the tension between David and Emma turned into an unexpected byproduct of this story as it came to life. And as I started to write, and break it down with @xemmaloveskillianx, I realized I needed to keep Captain Swan a united front even as they were at odds with everyone else around them. So when David started turning into more of an asshole as the story went along, especially in regards to his sister, and he said the abortion doctor line in Ch. 5, I started to realize the whole confrontation between CS after Henry was revealed to be Neal’s son wasn’t gonna work anymore. It just felt like too much. 

I will say, Killian did try to be extra dramatic when I started to write Ch.7. I had a whole different scenario playing out at first when I started to write it. But… it felt wrong to have him at odds with Emma over this. So it changed into what you read for the chapter.

I do think those are feelings Killian may still have though, and I’m pretty sure EFBWaF will not be the last time I play around in this universe, so I could see them coming up again in a future story.

I am so glad you didn't go through that route @pirateherokillian. As much as I'm frustrated at David's attitude (as I've told you... Repeatedly), it makes much more sense to the story than having Killian at odds with Emma. He can feel hurt, and I'm sure he does, but he is also mature enough to know they were just kids and weren't at all prepared to take care of a child in the circumstances and environtment they were in. His pain, I feel, would center more in a wishful thinking way, like "if only they had been older and could really provide for that child" kind of way, you know what I mean?

Seated on the edge of his bed, the muscles in his jaw ticking with tension and overwhelming emotions, Killian could feel Emma’s gaze on him as he mulled over her latest confession.

Neal Cassidy was Henry’s father.

The very man he’d spent the last several weeks trying to dig up as much dirt as possible on had been in a relationship with Emma Swan for the past five years. More than that, he’d gone and done his duty to his family legacy and continued on the family line.

Shooting up, Killian agitatedly started to redress himself. He could hear Emma shifting on the bed behind him.

“Killian…?” Her voice was soft, unsure.

“I can’t be here.” He muttered back as he buckled his belt into place. He then leaned down and snatched up an old, dirty shirt from the floor and pulled that over his head. “I need to go.” Killian dropped back down onto the mattress, hastily pulling his socks and boots onto his feet.

Oh, them riding the bike it totally parallels them riding a horse in Camelot, right? It's a bit different, because Killian wasn't as tense then as he is here, but it works on calming Emma down, at least for a while.

Secluded space where he goes to think when things with the club get to be too much, and that instantly calms Emma down? Totally Camelot with the middlemist field 😍

Okay, time for the heavy stuff. I'm not ready.

Neal, fucking scumbag that he is, taking advantage of her loneliness and melancholy.

Oh, Emma, I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I can't even imagine how she must have felt since she got back with Killian, seeing him bond with Henry, and dreading the moment he finds out who his father is and how things could so drastically change after that.

But just like Emma surprised Killian with her reaction, she is too at how much he loves both her and Henry.

When his eyes reopened, Emma was nearly overwhelmed at the love and devotion she saw there. “None of it will ever change how I feel about Henry. I don’t give a damn who his family is,” Killian brushed his thumb along her jaw. “I would do anything for that boy,” His attention briefly flickered to her lips, and then back up again. “And for you.”

*WAILS* I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!

And off they go to come clean to their loved ones. Oh boy. That's gonna be so much fun!

I found this chapter short. Was it short? I don't know, I was so enthralled I couldn't even comment too much. I guess I was so engrossed it seemed a shorter chapter, idk.

Emma’s in the kitchen one morning making coffee when she catches sight of the calendar. It’s nautical themed and has always been there, but this is the first time she’s really looked at it. Knowing that Liam’s birthday is the eighteenth, which is Sunday, she counts back and when she sees what the current day is, her head tilts.

In the beginning, she tried to keep track of her days. It would keep her busy for hours because she’d do nothing but obsess over it, but then slowly she just… stopped checking. Things changed, she began to really trust Liam and Killian came out more…

“Don’t take this the wrong way,” he starts softly, his eyes downcast. “I’m glad for that.”

Brows furrowing, she asks, “You’re glad that I didn’t have anyone else I could trust?”

Emma watches as his jaw ticks before his gaze drags back up to her face.

“If there was, you wouldn’t be here.”

There’s a truth in his whispered words that makes her heart flutter and her stomach flip. To hear him say that, after she spent the first couple of weeks thinking he wanted nothing more than for her to leave, means more than she cares to admit and more than she can ever wish to express.

Instead, she bumps her shoulder against his and says, “I’m glad, too.”

Planning Liam's birthday, sure you were.

Looking up at the ceiling, she breathes out, “Ohhh, that’s what’s behind that door.”

He tilts his head and narrows his eyes.

“What did you think was behind that door?”

Shrugging, she takes her jacket off and teases, “I thought it was where you hid all the bodies of the hitchhikers that you killed.”

"Funny,” he answers dryly, making her giggle again.

Resting with his back against the closed door to his room in the clubhouse, Killian watched Emma as she sat motionless on the end of his bed. He’d felt something proud swell up in him at her declaration to her brother, but it had fallen away quickly the moment they’d gotten inside and she’d seemed to go numb. She’d let him lead her straight to the room and sit her down on the mattress, not uttering a word or making any sort of indication of what she wanted to do.

Not really sure what do to himself, Killian figured that whatever was about to come was likely gonna be rather intense. He’d never seen Emma go off quite like that on her brother before. There had always been spats between the siblings, much like there were between him and his brothers. But unlike him and the two Liams, Emma had never come to blows over anything with David before.

He reached around and pulled the half-used joint, and his lighter, from his back pocket. The least he could do to ease the impact of whatever was looming was dull the senses a little bit. Bringing it to his lips, he flicked the lighter to life. The sound of it caught Emma’s attention and she looked up from where she had been staring blankly at the ground.

Her eyes were red-rimmed, but she had yet to actually cry. “Is getting fucked up your solution to everything?”

Killian coughed slightly after the hearty drag he took. “Never hurts.” He pushed off the door and stepped closer to her, holding the joint out as he went.

I was writing my liveblog review of this chapter when the Tumblr app decided to be as helpful as ever and crash on me, so I've lost all I'd written already. Imma try to recreate it, but eh, it won't be the same.

So, me being me, this is probably gonna take me the whole day to finish, I'll let you know. (I originally started at 11:30, the rewrite had to start at 12:05)

Oh, I love the parallel with canon with the joint and the rum. I love that scene in canon, with both of them trying to make levity of a pretty heavy situation and wanting to forget for just a moment why it's needed in the first place. But just like in canon, smoking weed doesn't really fix the problem, although it does help to at least finally breaking down and allowing them to talk about Emma's situation with David.

(gotta point out first though that this right here?

"Pretty sure things have always been fucked up for us, love.” Emma groaned and turned her head slightly to glare up at him through one eye. He shrugged. He figured it conveyed just how helpless he was feeling because Emma sighed and rose up, maneuvering until she was seated beside him, her legs tucked crisscross underneath each other.

“I know,” Emma closed her eyes and shook her head. “I didn’t mean everything in general,” When she looked back at him again, there was such a look of longing and sadness that even the ever-growing haze of pot couldn’t hide."

And knowing that the moment they knew they would probably hate him? And it looks like David knows, and he actually does hate him. And of course he thinks it's because of the club, so it's ended up happening what Killian feared and now David's under Gold's paw anyway and ugh good lord, nope, I'm out.

Chaos and tranquility was the best way Emma would probably describe what her life had become in only the first couple of months since she’d returned home.

The chaos was a given, considering she’d gone from not even speaking to her ex-boyfriend when she’d come back to Storybrooke to taking him up on a rather passionate and insistent offer to move into his coastal home. Killian hadn’t seemed comfortable with her living in her former apartment, and it didn’t take much to convince her that Moe French was indeed a shady, swindling asshole. Especially when it got around town that she was hooked up with the Rapscallions once more.

But moving in with him seemed like an enormous leap of faith, one precariously balanced on a still recovering foundation, and one that had sent David spiraling even deeper into his animosity towards Killian and the club. Much like it had been when she was teenager, she was finding herself stuck between lawman and outlaw. David had screamed and then painfully pleaded with her not to put herself back in that place, pointing out that he had been the reason she had decided to come home in the first place and wouldn’t she think of that? Or think of Henry?

Which had ultimately been why she had taken the leap of faith and agreed to have all her and her son’s things moved over the course of a weekend by Killian and a handful of the other club members. Because where her relationship with her brother was fast coming apart at the seams, and her relationship with her former ex was only starting to find its stride again, not to mention all the people caught in the middle of both. Plus, the blossoming connection between Henry Swan and Killian Jones wasn’t something she could easily overlook.

Chapter Five – Dear Prudence

Emma has never been much of a runner. Sure, she works out to keep herself healthy and fit—it’s kind of a must in her line of work—but running is just… the worst. However, there are a lot of skips that like to run when they realize she’s there to turn them in, so she pushes down her distaste for the exercise and steps on a treadmill at least twice a week. Not that she’ll ever really admit it, but it also helps clear her head. When she’s on the treadmill with her earbuds in, her mind is free from thought and free from worry, and free from thinking about the next place she’s going to run to.

Okay, so it’s just the physical act that I dislike.

So, now that I can post gifs through the app (I've been using my phone so much as a computer substitute I've gathered a decent enough reaction gif folder), this could be... interesting.

I relate to Emma's hatred about running so much it hurts. I cannot stand it. Which is funny, because I have a few friends who are (or have been at some point) runners, like participating in marathons and shit. There's also this guy who's participated in like four Iron Man's, which I get tired just thinking about it. So yeah, not exactly a sporty girl meself.

Anyway, back to the story.

Bless you, bless your cow and all her descendants (may their milk be plentiful to supply the next four generations of your family) for giving me Liam and Emma's friendship. As much as I appreciate overprotective older brother Liam being a self-righteous prick and not liking Emma in canon, I had hoped for them to have at least one positive interaction in the show, maybe like Liam begrudgingly thanking Emma for helping Killian get back on the good path and getting him out of the darkness. But that ship sailed (pun always intended ;) ), so it fills me with joy whenever I read a fic with a good relationship between Liam and Emma right from the get go. Also Liam being awed into laughter by Emma not really reacting to Killian's appearance and saying he's glad she's here? Oh, my heart !

Speaking of self-righteous pricks, Killian was not very nice with his brother. I understand he is terrified of getting rejected again by someone, anyone, especially after some of the people he loves most reacted the way they did, but that doesn't give him the right to being downright mean to Liam. Yelling at him to fuck off, and later acting all arrogant and like he doesn't even care. No wonder Liam thought he was punishing him for not being there for him when he left all those years ago. Also, love how Emma described him later as being a perfectionist and that's why he blames himself. And I just gkdndkdk!!!

Clearly I have way many more feelings about Liam even I realized lmao.

But okay, let's get back to cs, shall we?

Ah, Killian and his wet dreams. I mean, who can blame him after everything he's been through? And Emma is an attractive woman.

Who am I kidding? Despite it being the wrong kind of smut it was still hot af. But oh boy does he still have a long way to go. His dream self was the same arrogant playboy bastard I love who thinks women fall down to his feet just by winking more like blinking at them.

What a giant idiot, I love him.

Like I already said when I read the sneak peek, the first thing that came to mind with Emma banging of Killian's door was "do you wanna build a snowman?" I'm blaming this gif

Wow am I good at getting off track. No wonder it's taking me forever to write this review 🙈

You just gotta love Emma getting tired of Killian's bullshit and just deciding to tell him off. Four for you, Emma! And gosh there are so many little details in that argument alone! Like Killian still trying to keep the cool and arrogant facade, Emma not accepting his crap, how he absolutely freezes the moment she says she's not afraid of him (and oh I could write poetry about that reaction alone if I just had the knack to, but I suck at poetry so let's keep this thing going) and when they hear the watch tick, him giving her the freaking Swan nickname (my heaaart), and I don't even know what else except this part:

"The blanket, the hoodies, the other warm clothing—including the shirt she was wearing—that had all been left on her bed the first night… she assumed they were left by Liam, because why would Killian be the one offering her his things when he couldn’t even stand to be in the same room as her?"

Why indeed? And look! She also assumed it was all from Liam! Turns out the kindest brother isn't actually who one would think at first glance!

The plot thickens!

And we have a wild Killian appearing at breakfast all chastised but trying to keep his dignity intact (and failing).

And then there's the climax (sadly not that type of climax, but I hope we'll get there soon, even if Killian is ahead of us all and already got there ;) )

Emma, Emma, Emma... Didn't your brother teach you not to snoop on your friends'* bedrooms? Especially when they are letting you stay at their home with them, and sharing their clothes, and bedsheets, and food with you? And almost destroying valuable mementos (ha!) when said friend* goes back to their room? And thinking they are hiding a means for you to communicate with the outside world, aka your brother?

Bad form, Emma.

I mean, no wonder Killian flips the way he does after she almost smashes the watch to pieces. But oh, how unfortunate! He grabs her precisely by the left arm, resulting in her having a panic attack and fleeing the house altogether! And I totally wasn't expecting him to calm her down by singing. It makes total sense, since you already pointed out that his mother used to do that with he and Liam, but oh my heart!
