Perspective Collage. exploring the notion of enclosure and shelter in spaces on the periphery of high street activity with a specific reference to the nomadic nature of the rough sleeper and temporality of refuge in spaces neighbouring commercial activity.

Creative Mapping, 3rd Iteration
A wooden frame casing an etched map on tinted acrylic acts as a window for the depiction of our counter-spaces along a route through the high street. The notion of the window is used to as a device for framing our perceptions or spaces which are isolated from the main flow of public activity on the high street. Once past the 'void' the map exposes spatial qualities of counter-spaces we identified in relation to rough sleeping.
''Maps are imbued with the values and judgements of the individuals who construct them and they are undeniably a reflection of the culture in which those individuals live'' [Rethinking Maps, Rob Kitchin & Martin Dodge, 2007]
The layering of information in the map challenges the percieved distance between issues of homelessness in the city and society. In essence, the map becomes the hierarchy given to the depth of each space in revealing itself to the viewer, the idea of changing someones perception of space is excerised through the act of framing each space with signifiers and a level of translucency.
Project 1 Counter-Space | Counter-home
Creative mapping.
Mapping through a representation of spaces framed through a narrative of time in the city centre. The map offers two perspectives of spatial inhabitation; that of the rough sleeper, and that of the citizen. The temporality of refuge in the spaces identified is explored in sequence moving through the high street with a linear expression.
Initial response to mapping our route through the city centre selecting 8 spaces we feel captured the essence of our agenda regarding homelessness and rough sleepers. The map highlights the spaces with a clear journey between them yet fails to portray spatial qualities; more depth is needed.
A visit to George House, George Place, in Plymouth. Particular focus on the garden as a social space, a talk from the architect before the visit highlighted that the building was designed with spaces that focused on producing calm environments. The garden provided a place to socialise, contribute and liberate which seemed to work well as a place for residents to smoke and talk to each other. More images from the inside to come..
