"So I got the promotion," Y/N began to which Oikawa cut her off.
"Okay, congrats, but that's hardly an existential crisis."
"Tooru, for kami's sake, I'm begging you to shut up." Y/N groaned and covered her face with her hands. "I got the promotion, but it wasn't the promotion I wanted.â

note: hello (-: this fic was inspired by a really old fanfiction i read years ago that had a similar theme of the main character anonymously running a gossip blog. The Cherry on Top might also have been inspired by my recent binge of Gossip Girl, too, but weâre not gonna talk about that.Â
i donât want to call this a smau because itâs mostly going to be written content with some smau tidbits here and there, but take it as you will.
itâs also my first time in a long time writing a series, so i hope you stick a while and enjoy!

Kenmaâs eyes snapped open, and for a second, the faux blonde was confused. Why was he on the floor? Why were Bokuto and Kuroo cuddling and snoring in the corner of his gaming room? And what time was it? Time! His 24-hour stream!
Kenmaâs eyes widened and he quickly scrambled up from the ground. He immediately regretted his quick actions once blood rushed from his head and he began to see black. His head throbbed, and Kenma groaned. He gripped around nearby, hoping to at least find his gaming chair for balance as he waited for his dizziness to subside and for his vision to clear.Â
âFuck,â Kenma groaned when he was finally able to see clearly and take in the view in front of him. His stream was still on, chat box still flooding with spam comments, and his unruly bedhead on camera for the entire 30k viewers to see.
Kenma didnât even have the heart to utter a sign off before clicking off his stream. He knew he was in so much trouble. The digital clock on the corner on his table read 1:05 pm. Well, it looked like he completed his 24-hour stream... except he wasnât sober for half of it or even awake for that matter.
Kenma sighed in frustration and tugged at the front pieces of hair that framed his face. Anger and despair began to creep into him as he picked up his phone. His chest bubbled with anxiety and his heart dropped once he saw the number of text messages and phone calls Akaashi had spammed him with yesterday.
Looks like his manager had some damage control he needed to do if Kenma wanted to continue his career.
âHow could you?âÂ
Bokuto groaned and held his throbbing head in his hands. ââKaashi... too loud... please lower your voice.â
The four friends were currently squished into a booth at a nearby family diner for a late brunch.Â
âYou know how important this sponsorship was for Kozume and you two still had the audacity to show up at his house and get wasted!â Akaashi was seething. He gripped the plastic menu in his hand tightly, and Kenma inwardly grimaced. A defeated and hungover Bokuto was currently in line of fire, and Kenma knew he would be next.
âAnd you! White Claws? What are you, still in college? How could you egg Kozume on and get him drunk on stream?â Akaashi glared daggers at Kuroo, who hid his hangover behind dark sunglasses. His bedhead was even more disheveled than usual.Â
Kuroo mumbled an apology and still had the audacity to ask in a small voice if he could order a cup of hot coffee.
âDonât you think Iâll go easy on you, Kozume. If anything, youâre the worst out of all of them. How could you go and ruin your career like this after youâve spent years building your brand?âÂ
Kenma sighed and uncharacteristically dropped his forehead onto the table.Â
âCâmon Akaashi. Kenmaâs a content creator. Heâs supposed to be entertaining, so whatâs wrong with drinking on stream? Yeah, we got a little carried away and he mightâve been in the middle of a sponsorship, but you guys are close with Black Sheep, arenât you?â Kuroo waved a waitress over. âDidnât you say that theyâve been begging Kenma to collaborate with them for a while now? If theyâve been waiting for Kenma for that long, Iâm sure they can dismiss this one time. Yeah, can I get the breakfast combo one and some hot coffee?â
âThatâs besides the point, Kuroo-san,â Akaashi sighed. He was starting to develop his own headache. âJust hotcakes for me, thanks.â
âHow mad were they, anyways? Orange juice and hamburg steak.â Kenma placed the menu back on its stand and took a small sip of water.
âLuckily for you, Black Sheep wasnât too upset to the point where they wanted to break your three-month contract.â
âHey, thatâs great!â Bokuto beamed and ordered himself the lunch special. âThat means Kenma just needs to address the situation and heâll be in the clear.â
âLetâs not make this a bad habit,â Kenma mumbled. It wasnât unusual for Kenma to be picked apart online by gossip sites given that he was an influencer, but he had only recently been slandered by a Cherry on Top post that gained enough traction to warrant a personal statement to diffuse the rumors. He didnât want to have to put out any more statements if unneeded, and that meant he had to stay as âunproblematicâ as he could for a while.
âAgreed,â Akaashi nodded. âI managed to do some damage control with Black Sheep and they agreed to play along and make it seem like a drunk 24 hour stream was planned.Â
âThey were pretty happy with the amount of donations you got â a record, if I might add â but while you got let off easily this time with them, we still have one more problem.â
The three friends eyed Akaashi curiously as he took a sip from his iced tea.
âAnd that is?â Kenma furrowed his brow as Akaashi calmly pulled out his phone and placed it on the center of the table. The three leaned over the table and hovered over the phone.
Just when Kenma thought his headache was finally starting to subside, he felt another one coming. Except this time it was stronger and more annoying â one that he felt like he wouldnât be able to ignore as easily.
Pulled up on Akaashiâs phone was a new blog post by Cherry, hot off the press: Grab a drink - this oneâs a messy one. Charity stream disaster by kodzuken.
Kenma let out a breathy string of words so colorful that it made Akaashiâs eyes widen, Kuroo choke on his coffee, and Bokutoâs fork clatter loudly on his plate.
Y/N idly nibbled on her bottom lip. She was staring intently at her phone screen, and her eyebrows were beginning to furrow the longer she stared at the phone.
âCan you fucking put your phone down? You havenât been listening to a single word Iâve been saying the past ten minutes.â Oikawa pouted and scuffed his dress shoes against the floor childishly.
âTooru, look at this.â Y/N ignored Oikawaâs initial comment and shoved her phone into the brunetteâs face instead. Oikawa grumbled and swatted Y/Nâs hand away.Â
âYouâre too close,â he grouched but took a look at the phone nonetheless. After a couple seconds, Oikawa had to grab Y/Nâs trembling hand in his own to steady it just so he could actually read what was on the screen.
âDo you see what I see?â Y/N whispered. Oikawaâs eyes flickered from the phone to Y/Nâs fearful expression, then back to the phone.
âLooks like youâre doing well in your new job,â Oikawa commented as he watched the numbers of retweets and likes increase by the second on her recent Twitter post.
âItâs doing too well,â Y/N groaned.
âAnd why would that be a problem? If anything, Chief should be happy you have results to deliver not even one month into your new position.â
Y/N pulled away her phone and pocketed it. She hastily stood up and began to walk away. Oikawa noticed how pale Y/Nâs face was suddenly.
âOi! Where are you going?â Oikawa called after her, confusion laced in his eyebrows as he watched Y/Nâs retreating back disappear further and further.
âI donât feel so well... I have to go to the restroom!â
Oikawa sighed and watched Y/N turn the corner; the only remnants left of her presence were the sound of her heels clacking through the empty hallway.
âThis isnât good,â he muttered and walked over to the water dispenser in the corner of the officeâs break room. Oikawaâs hands moved without second thought as he routinely grabbed a cup from the cabinets and filled it with water. His mind, however, was racing with thoughts.
Ever since Y/N began posting on the Cherry on Top blog, TK Magâs analytics had been a dream come true for the company â there was a constant stream of new site visitors and the engagement had been at an all-time high. Simply put, the company was thriving thanks to Y/Nâs secret alias as Cherry. However, Oikawa was a little worried for her.
The two had known each other since they were children, and with all those years theyâve spent together, Oikawa was able to read Y/N like an open book; there was nothing Y/N could hide that Oikawa wouldnât be able to find out eventually.
Oikawa frowned and looked down at the cup of water in his hand. Y/N was like a cup of water; the more the cup was filled with water, the faster and easier it was to spill.Â
Despite being known for being an ambitious and hard worker, Y/Nâs successes were never accomplished without the stress and anxiety that came along with it; she had never been one to do well under pressure, and Oikawa didnât like the path Y/N was going down. By the looks of it, Oikawa was sure that Y/N would crack under stress in no time especially since she was already hesitant about taking the role of Cherry in the first place. He just hoped he wouldnât have to clean up the mess that was sure to come along with the spill.
end notes:
â iâm absolutely in love with the dynamic of bokuakakuroken whether as platonic friends or as lovers. i just feel like they would be a good friend group to have and be around with. just think of the all the headassery and apathy that comes with it xD
â if you like bokuakakuroken, too, please check out the artist mookie000. love their small comics, and i promise you wonât regret checking their art out (:
â also, apologies for the shorter chapter after a longer wait than usual. i have the whole series outlined, but my brain went brr and i had to scratch the entire original plot of this chapter and start over. the story should continue as planned next week, however.

headcanon: akaashi keiji is absolutely the type of boyfriend who will always save the last bite of food for you even if itâs something he wants for himself. itâs always worth it for him to see your eyes brighten in delight as you savor the last bite so happily.
tsukishima hates sappy sad love songs. there's plenty of other good music out there, so why would you willingly listen to something that makes you sad?
"you just don't understand," you tell him one day on the walk home from school. the walks home are always quiet save for the music that come from the earbuds the two of you share. most of the time, it's tsukishima's playlists, but once in a while, he'll let you pick the music. and every single time, he regrets letting you choose.
"why would you willingly listen to something that makes you so sad?" he'll roll his eyes, but relents anyways despite his distaste in your choice of music.
"you'll understand one day, tsukki." it's always the same reply with the same wry smile.
the thing is, he does understand.
you can always count on tsukishima kei to be there through all your heartbreaks. despite his distaste in sappy sad love songs, he'll always be ready to sit silently beside you and pull up a playlist filled with all your favorite sad songs.
"you don't even like keshi," you'll sniffle with a quiet laugh.
"you're right. i hate keshi. and joji. and your taste in music," tsukishima will reply without looking at you. he feels your doe-like eyes on him the entire time the soundtrack of your unlucky love life plays from the headphones he's placed over your ears, but he refuses to take his gaze off the wall in front of him.
but i like you.
the truth is, tsukishima does understand. he understands why you listen to music with heartbreaking lyrics and sad musical notes -- because he has his own secret playlist filled with the same sad songs.
The Cherry On Top ⢠02 ⢠03 | Charity stream disaster ⢠04
Kenma checked his stream overlay one last time to make sure everything was set up correctly. The streamer was only ten minutes away from his scheduled 24-hour charity stream that Akaashi had set up for him in partnership with the energy drink company, Black Sheep. For every donation Kenma receives during his live stream, all proceeds will be 100% donated to help animal shelters in need of supplies.
For once, Kenma was actually excited about a partnership. As a lover of cats and raising three rescues himself, it wasnât particularly a hard decision for Kenma to make when Black Sheep had approached him and brought up the idea of a partnership and a charity stream campaign in conjunction with the animal shelter Black Sheep was associated with.
That was why when his sponsorship with Black Sheep had been threatened by a rumor, Kenma ultimately made a public announcement to deny the rumor and personally reached out to the PR/Influencer team at Black Sheep to talk it out with them.
Now, three minutes prior to going live, Kenmaâs phone buzzed multiple times. He glanced at the lit up screen and rolled his eyes. It was Kuroo who was blowing up his phone, and Kenma had a fairly decent idea of what the texts were about.
Last week, Kuroo and Kenma had met up with Akaashi and Bokuto for their monthly dinner meet up when Akaashi had mentioned Kenmaâs upcoming charity stream.
âA 24-hour stream is too easy for Kenma; the gremlin routinely stays up at least 36-hours once a week anyways.â Kuroo let out a barking laugh as he flipped the meat that was grilling in front of the four friends.
âThatâs besides the point, Kuroo.â Kenma rolled his eyes and leaned back in the vinyl booth. âIâm doing a charity stream. All donations I get during the stream goes towards the animal shelter that Black Sheep partners with.â Kenma made sure to slowly emphasize the word âcharityâ when he explained his upcoming project.
âYou know, Iâve never seen Kenma so excited about a project,â Bokuto quipped as he eagerly tucked into his meal.
âItâs for a good cause and Kozume was quick to say yes,â Akaashi added as he flashed a small smile towards the flushed streamer. Kenma still wasnât used to hearing people praise him, no matter how often he was always featured in esports commentary and articles.
âI have three cat rescues myself, so it was a no brainer,â he mumbled, averting eye contact. He opted to push around the burnt pieces of meat with his chopsticks around his plate instead.
âAw, youâre embarrassed that you got caught being openly excited for your next project!â Kuroo smirked and nudged his friend. It was all friendly-banter, and Kenma knew that Kuroo meant well and was extremely happy for him, but he flushed harder as Bokuto and Akaashi chimed in to cheer on their friend.
âIâm just being a nice person. Maybe you should try it some day,â Kenma shot back.
âWhat do you mean?â Kuroo scoffed. âIâm always a nice person.â
Akaashi and Kenma rolled their eyes at Kuroo while Bokuto let out a good-natured laugh at Kurooâs response.
âHey, wait! You know what you should do to make your 24-hour stream more spicy?â There was a mischievous glint in Bokutoâs eyes as he waited for his friends to respond.Â
âBokuto-san, whatever youâre thinking probably isnât a go--âÂ
âDrunk 24-hour stream!âÂ
âOh, nice!â Kuroo snapped his fingers and grinned his infamous Cheshire Cat smirk. Akaashi sighed and Kenma grimaced.Â
"Iâm not going to take ideas from two drunks. And we barely sat down to eat, how are you two this drunk already?â Kenma wrinkled his nose.
Kenma unlocked his phone and quickly scanned through his group chat. Yup. There it was: a barrage of texts from Kuroo asking Kenma if he had his booze ready followed by a spam of suggestive eye emojis by Bokuto. Kenma was quick to notice that Akaashi had purposely chosen to ignore the group texts and offered no help in diverting the suggestions.
Kenma snorted quietly at Bokuto's message as he locked his phone. He looked up at the monitor to his right and read some comments that were starting to flood in his stream chat. He gave his camera a small smile and leaned back in his chair, answering some questions that caught his attention and saying "hi" to others.
Kenma usually liked to start his stream off rather chill by interacting with his viewers. After playing his music playlist and adjusting the volume, he finally announced his agenda for the day after a few minutes.
"Today I'm partnering with Black Sheep for a charity stream. It's going to be a 24-hour stream and we're gonna spend most of the time playing some League. All donations I get will go towards helping an animal shelter which you guys know I'm all for." Kenma paused as his donation notification sounded and his text-to-speech setting began to read the donation to him and his viewers.
"meowriachi donated $25: 24-hour stream? too ezpz kodzuken"
Kenma laughed and ran a hand through his messy half-up styled hair.
"I was telling my friends about today's stream and Kuroo said the same thing. Maybe in our next collaboration we'll do a longer stream if you guys want that. We'll also be able to have more fun and do more things, too."
Kenma was smart and sneaky. He always was. Kuroo did always say he was the brains of the team back in high school when they played volleyball together. Kenma was good at analyzing situations, and because of this strength, Kenma knew when to use certain words and situations to create benefits for him and his career. This was no exception. The streamer knew Black Sheep would be moderating his stream, so now the company had slight pressure to partner with him again if there was an in demand from his fans. And this was Kodzuken we were talking about. There was no doubt Kenma knew there would already be a second sponsorship in the works.
Kenma smirked. Easy peasy stream indeed.
Kenma loved his job. He truly did. It wasn't every day someone could wake up every day and actually look forward to going to work, and for that, Kenma was thankful. He was thankful that he had the skillsets to do well in competitive gaming and that he had a knack of being able to pick up mechanics of new games so easily. He was thankful that he had a fanbase that enjoyed his commentary and sarcastic humor, and a fanbase that supported and helped him build his brand from ground up.
Kenma knew he owed one-third of his success to his fans and another one-third to his own hard work and passion. But Kenma also knew he owed the last one-third of his success to his friends.
Not once did Kenma regret making Akaashi his manager; Akaashi had gotten him way more sponsorships than Kenma himself could've if he was still balancing streaming, content creation, and managing his own projects.
Kenma was thankful for Kuroo for always challenging him to step outside his comfort zone. Even when Kenma was irritated and didn't want to hear Kuroo's words of advice and encouragement, Kenma was still grateful for it all.
And Bokuto. Kenma guesses he can be thankful for Bokuto for always hyping him up when he needed it the most. Especially when he was extremely hung over from a night out of (forced) drinking and had barely ten minutes to wake up and set up his stream on time.
Yes, Kenma was truly thankful for his friends. But right now, Kenma wanted to kill them. He wanted to kill Kuroo and Bokuto for coming over to his house uninvited even after he warned them not to and for raiding his stream in real life.
Right now, Kenma was seething. One, he was in the middle of a very important sponsorship deal. Two, he was in the middle of a ranked game in League of Legends and he didn't want to lose his winning streak. And three, his two goofball friends had showed up to his house with alcohol and announced out loud to his viewers that Kenma would now be participating in a drunk 24-hour stream.
Kenma doesn't remember the last time he got this mad. What's worse was that Kenma's fans were all for it. His stream chat was getting spammed with poggers emotes, and it was difficult for Kenma to admit that he had been getting more and more donations ever since Kuroo and Bokuto had shown up and the alcohol was brought out. And because of that, Kenma had begrudgingly surrendered and cracked open a White Claw.
Except he didn't stop only at one; not if Kuroo and Bokuto could help it. And at only about 5'8" with a smaller build, Kenma unfortunately fell victim to being a lightweight. And with Kuroo and Bokuto, kings of being instigators, were there to egg him on along with his stream chat, Kenma downed can after can.
Just a little something to take the edge off a work week, right?
end notes:
â kenmaâs twitch stream took me 30 minutes to piece together đŞ
â if you see the same comments on kenmaâs twitch chat twice... no you didnât đđŞ
â also peep the stream title change đ
â kenmaâs the type to use scuffed candids of his friends as their contact photos, but it didnât work out too well. he actually respects akaashi enough to use a decent photo, and bokuto never takes a bad photo. ever. i guess kurooâs the only one he can easily clown.

The Cherry On Top ⢠01 ⢠02 | The Cherry On Top ⢠03
âKozume, are you even listening to me?â Akaashi sighs and closes his laptop. He was only halfway through his scheduled agenda for todayâs meeting, but there was no point in continuing if his client was just going to ignore him for the whole hour.
âI am, I am,â Kenma mumbled, eyes fixated on something that was hidden under the table.
âWhat did I just talk about for the last ten minutes then?â Akaashi challenged.
âWeâre changing my video uploads from Tuesdays to Fridays, and Black Sheep wants to do a sponsorship with me in my next stream,â Kenma replies without skipping a beat. His feline eyes are still glued to his phone, unblinking, as his fingers tapped away at one of his games.
Akaashi sighed once more. âAnd youâre fine with the upcoming changes and sponsorship then?â
Kenma nodded. âAkaashi. I trust you to make the best decisions for me.â He finally slipped his phone back into his pocket and tilted his head to look his friend in the eye. âI didnât hire you as my manager for no reason.â
âIf I knew working with you was going to be this difficult, I wouldâve stuck with my previous job.â Akaashi flashed the male a wry smile.
âHey, if you want to hand in your resignation letter right now and go back to your previous life of disgusting convenience store food and cigarettes for lunch, by all means.â Kenma smirked and extended a hand out, palm up as if waiting for an actual resignation letter to manifest from Akaashi.
Akaashi cleared his throat and reopened his laptop. âMoving on...â
âTOORU!!!â Y/N screamed at the top of her lungs as soon as she spotted the fashion editor from across the courtyard. Lunchers nearby stared at the loud girl before turning their heads to look at the unfortunate boy on the receiving end of the shout.
Oikawa contemplated ignoring his friend and instead considered turning around to head back inside TK Magâs office building. He would rather eat with his annoying suck-up intern than his embarrassing friend. Unfortunately for him, said friend yelled his name once more and beckoned for him to come over.
Oikawaâs eye twitched and he reluctantly trudged across the courtyard and towards Y/N.
âDonât be so embarrassing, Y/N-chan,â Oikawa grumbled as he took a seat across from her.
âOh please, as if that airplane tie youâre wearing isnât embarrassing,â Y/N shot back, eyes flickering up once at the cartoon-printed tie before back down at her laptop screen.
âTheyâre UFOs, for your information,â Oikawa mumbled through gritted teeth, âand besides, Ayame-chan said it was cute, so your opinion is invalid and unnecessary.â
âEnough about your tie. Iâm about to literally combust from nerves.âÂ
âWhat is it this time?â Oikawa rolled his eyes and lazily sipped his latte.Â
âIâm about to schedule my first blog post for tomorrow.â At this, Oikawaâs eyes widened and he straightened up in his seat.
âWhoâs the unlucky victim?â Oikawa scooted closer to Y/N, their elbows touching as he leaned in to read off her screen.
âYou know, for someone who looks like sheâs about to shit her pants from nerves, you wouldnât be able to tell with Cherryâs online persona,â Oikawa hummed and nonchalantly commented.Â
Y/N smacked his shoulder once in response.Â
âThatâs the whole point, Oinkawa. No oneâs supposed to know that Cherry is me, and that I am Cherry.â Y/N sighed and brought the tip of her thumb to her mouth. She nibbled on her fingernail nervously as she clicked on the draft of her blog post. âWell? Can you tell who it is?â
âI would say Miya Atsumu, the MSBY setter, but I wouldnât exactly call him beautiful, Y/N-chan.â
âItâs not Miya Atsumu and you take that back! He is beautiful, but thatâs besides the point; itâs Kozume Kenma, the professional gaming streamer and content creator.â
âWell thatâs subjective,â Oikawa sneered. Iwaizumi once had the opportunity to interview Miya Atsumu for an editorial, and Oikawa had tagged along much to Iwaizumiâs headache. Having played as a setter as well during his time in high school, Oikawa had some differences with Atsumuâs playing style, and the two did not get along too well that day.
âHowâd you even get this dirt on Kozume Kenma anyways?â Oikawa made a face and smacked Y/Nâs hand away from her mouth. âThatâs disgusting, Y/N-chan, and youâre getting nail polish in your teeth.â
âI stalked his fan accounts on Twitter. Itâs amazing what you can find with a little digging, to be honest.â Y/N scanned her draft. âAnd a little scary,â she added as an afterthought.
âUgh, kami, I canât do this, Tooru!â Y/N whined and shut her laptop, taking her head into her hands. âThis is the most disgusting line of work Iâve ever imagined myself having to do.â
âYou know no one is forcing you to take this promotion, right?â Oikawa leaned back and crossed his arms across his chest.
âThis is Y/N and TK Mag weâre talking about here.â Oikawa and Y/N turned around at the new voice. âIf you were over $100k in student debt and a well-known and well-paying company offered you a promotion, wouldnât you take it?â Iwaizumi and Hanamaki walked up to the duo and took a seat at their table.
âYouâre literally talking about the girl whoâs dream is to become a princess and find a rich prince charming to take care of her,â Hanamaki added.
âHey!â Y/N interjected, but was ignored.Â
âBut she also didnât graduate as a journalist with an emphasis in fashion from UTokyo to become a gossip blogger,â Oikawa pointed out.
âOkay can we not talk about me like Iâm not here?â Y/N pouted. âAnd you all have valid points.âÂ
She sighed. This was a tough decision. Y/N does have a lot of student debt to pay off, and the pay raise that came with the promotion was definitely enticing and worth drooling over. On the other hand, Oikawa was right in which Y/N didnât graduate with over $100k in debt with a journalism degree to become a gossip blogger. But one thing that Y/N also had to think about was that this promotion wouldâve been her opportunity to become a full-time employee at TK Mag, her dream company. And then there was Hanamaki, who was there just to out her (slightly) embarrassing and (very much so) unrealistic dream.
âWhyâd you even take the promotion anyways? You couldâve just stayed an intern and wait for staff writer positions to open up.â
Y/N knocked twice before entering the Editor in Chiefâs private office. âGood afternoon, Chief! You wanted to see me?â
âOh yes, Y/N, come in. Please, take a seat while I finish up this email.â
Y/N grinned and skipped over to the loveseat that occupied the middle of the office. She crossed her legs and smoothed her blouse. Y/N was buzzing, and it wasnât just because of the three cups of coffee she had stomached throughout the day.
âJudging by how you canât sit still, Iâm assuming you know why I called you in here.âÂ
âOh, sorry. Iâve had one too many cups of coffee today,â Y/N responded sheepishly. âBut I hope youâre gonna tell me what I think it is youâre gonna tell me.âÂ
It was hard for Y/N to keep the smile on her face from growing as she watched her Chief pull out a folder and place it down on the coffee table in front of her. The smile on Y/Nâs face grew bigger as the Chief pulled out a piece of paper and slid it towards her. It was exactly what Y/N was expecting: a contract for a full-time position at the company.
âCongratulations, Y/N. Your hard work has not gone unnoticed these past few months youâve been at TK Mag as an intern, and weâd like to extend our offer to you as a full-time employee.â
âYes, yes, yes! I accept!â Y/N squealed and eagerly looked through her tote bag for a pen. âI donât even care what staff writer position itâs for -- although my first choice would be for the fashion department since I did go to school for fashion journalism -- but Iâm so excited!!â Y/N was already picturing herself attending fashion shows with Oikawa.
âY/N, wait. Before you sign, I just want you to know that the full-time position isnât to become a staff writer for the fashion department.â
âHuh?â Y/N stopped riffling through her bag. â...What is it for then?âÂ
âTK Mag is going to try something new. Weâre going to branch out to a sister site and run a gossip blog called The Cherry on Top. I want you to take on the alias as Cherry and run the blog.â
âGossip... blog...? The Cherry on Top? Me?â Y/N could hardly comprehend what the Chief was saying.
âWill you accept? I know itâs a brand new position and something weâve never done before at TK Mag, but we have high hopes and I know youâll do well as one of my best employees.â
âWith all due respect, Chief, Iâm a fashion writer. I write about fashion week and the latest trends in the fashion industry. I donât write gossip nor do I want to slander anyone. Itâs not my cup of tea.â Y/N narrowed her eyes. She couldnât believe the Chief wanted her to do such dirty work.
âI had a feeling this might be the case.â The Chief sighed, and all signs of pleasantries disappeared. âListen, Y/N, if you donât want this promotion, Iâll give it to the next intern in line. But just know that if you donât take this position, youâre going to have to clear out your desk by end of day and find a new company to work for.â
Y/N was in disbelief. She couldnât believe her career was getting threatened. Her grip on her pen tightened as she stared at the document in front of her. The words Full-time Employee Contract for: Cherry, The Cherry on Top seemed to glare at her.Â
âThere will also be a hefty raise included in your promotion,â the Chief added after witnessing Y/Nâs hesitation. âYou did just graduate from UTokyo, did you not? Surely you donât want to be riddled with student debt.â
Y/N was torn. What was she going to do? TK Mag was her dream company, and if she refused the promotion and got let go, she would drown in debt. Surely being a gossip blogger wouldnât be too bad, right?
Y/N swallowed her pride and uncapped her pen. With a quick flourish, she signed her signature on the contract and forlornly shook hands with a now-smiling Chief.Â
I hope I didnât make the wrong decision...
âYou made the right decision, Y/N. Welcome to the team.â
Y/N gulped. She couldnât tell her friends that her job security had been threatened if she didnât take the promotion.
âWell maybe it was time for me to grow up. I donât need a rich prince charming to take care of me. Iâll take care of myself with my new pay raise.â Y/N grimaced on the inside. She hoped that was convincing, but judging by the silent stares she received from her three male friends, even she knew they werenât too believing of her.
âAnyways, Cherry promised her 500 followers the first post will be up tomorrow, and she isnât one to break promises, so... letâs queue this baby up.â With a swift click of her trackpad, Y/Nâs first gossip post as Cherry was scheduled.
Unbeknownst to Y/N, Oikawa, Iwaizumi, and Hanamaki shared a look.
Kenma was unfazed. He really was. Even when his Twitter notifications blew up with mentions, he simply ignored them. It wasnât like he paid much attention to them in the first place anyways. And when he was in the middle of streaming and his Twitch chat started spamming the link to the blog post, he simply told his mods to delete comments that had anything to do with it.
Kenma was unfazed. Simply because it just wasnât true. And even though the readers didnât know if it was true or not and the article was currently trending in the Esports vertical and being repurposed for other articles, Kenma knew it wasnât true and therefore did not care.
Except Akaashi was getting on his nerves as his manager continued to try to bring it up in conversations.Â
âKozume, you have to say something.â
âWhy?â Kenma sighed. He really didnât see the need to say anything. It wasnât like this was the first time Kenma had been the subject of a rumor. It was all going to die down soon anyways.
âItâs been three days already and people are still commenting on it. Your fans are upset, and I think you owe it to them to explain your side.âÂ
âItâs not a big deal, Akaashi. If fans are that upset about a rumor of me boosting League accounts as a side business, they probably should get a job and hop off Twitter once in a while,â Kenma mumbled and continued to click away on his game controller.
âWell itâs not just your fans that are upset, Kozume. Your sponsorship with Black Sheep is also on rocks right now because of the rumor.âÂ
At that, Kenmaâs fingers slowed, and he watched his character get headshot by the enemy on the TV.
âYouâre telling me that they believe some stupid rumor that was probably written by a jealous 13-year-old?â Kenma scowled, and Akaashi finally felt his friend getting serious about the situation. It wasnât often that Kenma showed his emotions other than his usual aloof self, but when his projects started to get affected, Kenma took things really serious.
âItâs not that they believe it, but they havenât been as responsive to my emails as they usually are ever since the post was published. It seems they might be taking your silence as the truth.â
Kenma sighed and tossed his controller to the side. He wasnât in the mood to game anymore. Instead, he stood up and trekked down the hallway towards his game room. Looks like he had a fire to diffuse if he wanted to keep his sponsorship alive.
end notes:
â student debt and job security is no joke đ˘
â mattsun did not join y/n, oikawa, iwa-chan, and hanamaki during lunch because he was away on a photoshoot assignment
â kenma did boost league accounts back when he was still in college and barely starting out as a streamer... except the accounts he boosted was kurooâs and hinataâs because they wouldnât stop begging him to until he did

I like to think that Yachi, as a fellow blonde, is an honorary member of the Sendai Frogs (even though itâs hard to fit her in photos with Koganegawa, Tsukki, and Kyoutani) đ¸đ

The Cherry On Top ⢠Character Introductions ⢠01 | And so it begins ⢠02
With each cup of coffee Y/N placed in the cupholder, a low grumble accompanied the action. Each thunk of coffee that slid into each holder was a little more aggressive and heavy-handed than the task need be, but the air of irritation that emitted from the girl was undeniably strong, and the unfortunate barista that was tasked to make this foul-mood customerâs drinks handed her the last of her order before quickly slinking away.
âStupid, stupid, stupid,â Y/N continued to grumble under her breath the entire frigid three blocks back to the campus of where her office was located.
âStupid, stupid, stupid.â A scowl was evident on the girlâs face the entire elevator ride up the tall skyscraper until it dinged and stopped at the 70th floor. It wasnât until the doors slid open that Y/N sucked in a shaky breath and plastered a Crest-worthy, Splenda-sweet smile on her face as she exited the lift and entered the bustling office.
âCoffeeâs here!â Y/N sang out and placed the two cup holders down on top of the front officeâs counter tabletop.
âY/Nâs back!â
A scurry of workers crowded around the 21-year-old girl as she animatedly read off orders off the top of her head and handed them out, one-by-one to its rightful owner.
âYouâre the best, Y/N-chan!â A senpai from the tech editorial department ruffled her head, earning a small whimper of protest as she tried to sooth her hair. It wasnât like she spent twenty-minutes this morning trying to tame her unruly mane for nothing.
âIsnât Y/N the best? Sheâs always so good at remembering who gets what.â Another senpai from the lifestyle editorial department chimed in and took a sip from her latte.
âOh no, no! Iâm just doing my job.â Y/N let out a forced chuckle, but it went unnoticed as her coworkers slowly disappeared back to their corner of the office to get back to work.
"Alright, you can drop the act, you fake."
The instant Y/N heard a snort coming from behind, the fake smile that was plastered to her face immediately dropped as she whipped around to face a chestnut-haired male.
"I hate it here," Y/N groaned and leaned her upper body onto the countertop. She let out a huff of air and blew a stray piece of hair away from her eyes. "I can't wait to graduate from coffee intern to staff writer."
"You're meeting with the Chief later today, right?" Oikawa Tooru removed his hands from the pockets of his slacks and eyed the remaining drink leftover.
"Mmm, yeah." Y/N let out a distracted sigh as her thumbs flew across the keyboard of her smartphone for a quick text. With the click of a button, she locked her phone and shoved it into her pants pocket and gave her full attention to the older male. "Chief told me that she had good news for me, and judging by all the overtime work and random projects I picked up over the past few months --"
"You mean bitch work?" Oikawa interrupted, earning a glare from the girl.
"For your information, my 'bitch work' got published last week! And that's besides the point. All that matters is that Chief has noticed that I'm a responsible worker who is willing to go above and beyond my day-to-day tasks and now I'm definitely getting the promotion that's been long due!"
There was a smug grin on Y/N's face while Oikawa rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, you are a hard worker, Y/N-chan, but that doesn't mean you should be doing other people's tasks when it should be their job to do them in the first place."
"Can't you just be happy for me?" Y/N whined. "I didn't graduate from UTokyo with over $100k in student debt just to go on coffee runs. And I don't even get to have my own drink!"
Oikawa sighed and placed a hand on top of the shorter girl's head. "I am happy for you. And proud of you. I hope you get the staff writer position you wanted, and when you do get assigned to my department, I'll make sure to run you dead with ten articles simultaneously."Â
There was an evil, teasing glint in Oikawa's eyes which Y/N responded to by sticking out her tongue.
A ding! interrupted the teasing banter and Y/N checked her phone. She let out a quick squeal and a small hop.
"Gotta go! Ayame-san from tech has an article she wants me to write!"
Y/N waved goodbye and scurried away.
"Hey! I asked for a dirty Chai, not a mocha! What the fuck, Y/N?" Oikawa yelled after the retreating girl.
"Serves you right for making me do your coffee run too, Oinkawa!" Y/N's bubbly laughter echoed through the hallway as she skipped towards the tech editorial department.
Oikawa sighed and tugged at the front pieces of his hair. It was already nearing the end of the day, but he was still at least half an hour away from completing his remaining task for the day. He was currently in the middle of copy-editing an article one of his staff writers submitted earlier today when he felt his phone buzz in his pocket.
Oikawa removed his glasses and pulled out his phone, rubbing his tired eyes while unlocking his phone. It was a text from Y/N.
She must've finally talked to Chief, Oikawa thought. He swiped his thumb to unlock his phone and read the text.
Oikawa grimaced at Y/Nâs text. It was obvious the meeting did not go the way Y/N had wanted it to. Sighing, Oikawa stood up and packed his things. Looks like the article was going to have to be pushed back a week; there was a more important meeting he had to attend to first.
Y/N glared at her phone and bounced her leg, a nervous tick that Oikawa absolutely hated whenever she did. Maybe if he was here right now, he would've had the opportunity to scold her. Except his train was running five minutes late. Y/N groaned as she watched another minute go by.
Where's Tooru?
How much longer was he going to make her sit in agony at their favorite bakery and tea shop?Â
Right when Y/N was about to hit send on her phone, the shop door jingled, and in waltzed Oikawa.
"Alright, alright, I'm here. What happened?" Oikawa was slightly breathless, having sped-walked from the station and down the block to meet up with Y/N. He rolled up his button-down sleeves and removed his work badge from around his neck.
"So I got the promotion," Y/N began to which Oikawa cut her off.
"Okay, congrats, but that's hardly an existential crisis."
"No! Let me finish!" Y/N stomped her foot once, irritation beginning to seep in. Oikawa rolled his eyes, completely immune to Y/N's temper flare ups. Instead of retorting, he opted to take a sip of her fruit tea. "I got the promotion, but it wasn't the promotion I wanted."
"Did you get placed in lifestyle with Iwa-chan? I heard that department's kind of a mess right now. Iwa-chan told me their lifestyle editor's too busy hooking up with Hanamaki's layout intern to even run the department --"
"Tooru, for kami's sake, I'm begging you to shut up." Y/N groaned and covered her face with her hands. "I'm TK Mag's new gossip blogger. Chief wants me to freaking exploit influencers under the alias of 'Cherry' for the new Cherry on Top blog."
âThe new what now?â
end notes:Â
â the timestamps at the top of each photo are irrelevant. the timestamps that you want to pay attention to (or not. it really doesnât matter) are the ones within the text chats.
â if you see the word shanchou in oikawaâs and y/nâs texts, i accidentally misspelled the word shachou which means âpresident of the company.â i was debating whether i wanted to use the japanese spelling or just keep it as Chief. i changed my mind multiple times and decided to just go with the english version but got too lazy to correct the photo. đ¤Ą
â props to authors who only explicitly write smaus. creating each social post is so time consuming and slightly frustrating that i almost threw my phone across the room.
â donât come at me for my nonexistent and try-hard humor. đâthis is why i only write angst.
â no kenma and akaashi this chapter, but they will be introduced in the next!

is your smau inspired by the fic "the cherry on top" by ohwhatsherface???
ohmygosh, yes! ohwhatsherface is one of my fave sasusaku authors when i was super into the ship like 10 years ago hahaha. tbh, i wasnât expecting anyone else to make that connection.
if anyone else likes a good sasusaku au, please check out thecherryontop by ohwhatsherface.
synopsis: ever since F/N L/N was a second year in high school, she always knew she wanted a career in the editorial world. now, as a fresh college graduate, she's been promoted from a measly coffee intern to a full-time position at one of the most highly-read magazines in all of tokyo: TK Mag. except her job is to anonymously run their new gossip blog???
"ok, i so did NOT sign up for this! >:("
pairing: kenma x f!reader
genre: slice of life, hurt and comfort, slow-burn romance, mature topics in later chapters
f/n l/n
â fresh college grad from UTokyo
â she's naive and a bit too clumsy for oikawa's liking, but she's an ambitious and hard worker
â wanted to be part of the fashion editorial department with oikawa, but was put in the role of the anonymous blogger, who goes by "cherry" for TK Mag's The Cherry On Top gossip blog
â current concern: thinks her line of work is disgusting, but what can a girl with over 100k in student debt say about a well-paying job?
â fun fact: oikawa and f/n shared their first kiss with one another when they were 5 just to "test it out"
kenma kozume
â streamer and content creator
â 1 year older than y/n and graduated from UTokyo
â he has been the unfortunate subject of cherry's gossip lately
â current concern: he's a wealthy, successful 22 year old, but at what cost? his entire life is put on blast and he can't seem to escape being targeted by tabloids (especially a certain "The Cherry On Top" blog) and exploited as "someone he's really not"
â fun fact: despite his nonchalant exterior, he's actually a perfectionist and is really hard on himself when it comes to managing and executing projects
keiji akaashi
â kenma's video editor and manager
â it's important to note that despite being kenma's manager who wants his client to succeed, akaashi is also kenma's voice of reason beyond the professional setting
â he has the task of figuring out a way to stop these gossip blogs from publishing false stories about kenma
â current concern: he thinks his eyesight is gradually getting worse thanks to constantly editing videos in the dark, but he refuses to edit in proper lighting
â fun fact: kenma actually reached out to akaashi to see if he wanted to manage his projects for him and offered to double his pay after seeing akaashi's constant lunch breaks that consisted of convenience store-bought onigiri and cigarettes
tooru oikawa
â fashion editor at TK Mag and runs the department despite being only 23 years old
â thinks y/n is an absolute nincompoop, but "she's a lovable idiot, i guess đ"
â despite y/n's constant begging not to, he's tried multiple times to submit internal promotion reviews within TK Mag to get y/n out of the hellhole gossip blog department
â current concern: he still can't find the polaroids his friends took of him and hid somewhere in the office when he wore those god-awful plaid shorts after losing a bet
â fun fact: oikawa is a natural-born leader, so running the fashion department is like second-nature to him. however, never in a million years will oikawa ever admit that y/n's constant admiration and belief in him is what makes him run a successful department
