He has competed in several different marathons, triathlons, and shorter distance races for charity. Gaskill challenges himself to stay in shape for these races by working constantly to maintain his physical endurance.

Craig Gaskill starts his training by working his way up to the distance he will be running. For marathons, this process takes much longer than for a 5K or another shorter race. Many runners think that they have to increase the distance they run every day until they can complete a 26-mile run in a respectable time. However, training like this could lead to injury and won’t necessarily translate into success on race day.

Instead, Gaskill varies his running distances and the speed with which he runs them. He runs a longer distance at a normal jogging pace one day and concentrates on running faster in shorter distances. This trains the body for the rigors of a long race faster and more effectively than running at the same pace while increasing the distance. This gives his veins and arteries more elasticity and prepares his heart to pump at different rates during the real race.

Craig Gaskill is an Operations Manager for PlayMart, a local Los Angeles pet products retail chain. Selling products has been a priority for him for several years while working at a neighborhood store, along with connecting with the community surrounding the store and managing employees so they can become leaders in the company. Gaskill is still in charge of making sales and helping his employees make their own sales so the store can be successful.

Here are three things he teaches his employees about how to make sales:

Treat the customer like a friend. Even when things beyond your control while trying to make a sale in a retail setting, like running out of the product the customer needs in that moment, customers will always respond positively to friendly, warm feelings and treatment. A smile, a laugh, or a sympathizing comment or two can break the ice between salesperson and customer.

Listen actively. Believe it or not, the act of listening is not passive. Craig Gaskill tells his employees to concentrate on their customers’ words and show they understand by giving verbal and nonverbal confirmation.

Sell to need. At a retail setting, you don’t usually have much time to show your customer products they don’t need or want. They expect you to point them to the right products for their situation. Once you understand what they need and want, you can suggest the right products exactly for their needs.
