As a Persona fan, and a guy who's favorite color is green, my time has come... in, like, a year, hopefully.
Man, now that rumors and leaks are pointing to a Nintendo Direct next Tuesday, this week's gonna feel excruciatingly long.
Well, since we’ll probably get some Fortune’s Weave news in a week or two, I feel like locking in some of my wildest predictions for the game. At least from what we saw in the first trailer. Most of these will probably be wrong, so please think of this as a living document of evolving theories as we learn more and more about the game.
There will be an avatar character. It’ll be kinda like how in Skyrim’s character creator, there’s multiple different versions of humans based on what country they’re from. Four or five different national origins you pick from that determine things like base stats and aptitudes. They’ll probably be the various countries of the Dagdiun continent, maybe some of the neighboring countries of Fodlan, and of course, Fodlanese themselves. I think most of the Dagdiun nations will be based on ancient Rome and her neighbours.
The orange haired sword infantry guy seen in Cai, Theodora, and Dietrich’s armies is one of these avatar characters. Mostly like from a country that gives aptitudes to swordsmanship.
The main story of Fortune’s Weave will consist of four separate storylines happening concurrently to each other, Sonic Adventure style. Also Sonic Adventure style, there’ll be a final chapter sort of deal that ties them all together. It’ll involve some Zero Escape bullshit where Sothis gives the Avatar memories from all four timelines, thus allowing them to figure out how to get the Golden Ending.
The main diverging point for the four main routes is who wins the Heroic games, which’ll happen about 80-90% of the way through the game. Heroes get their wish, and spend the next 3-5 hours dealing with the fallout until it all ends in their final battle.
Sothis’s deal is that an incarnation of her lingering will/ consciousness can tell some bullshit’s going down at the heroic games. So she starts visiting the avatar in their dreams to help them put a stop to it.
Cai will be a sort of generic hero boy who’s route is the intended first playthrough meant to introduce the player to the setting proper. Partway through the story he’ll be too late to save his father, and instead use his wish to help the Sovereign fend off the threats he and the city face. He’ll be innocent and well meaning, but ignorant to the harm inflicted by the Sovereign and nobles of the city, leading to eventual conflict with the other lords.
Theodora will be fighting in the games in order to earn the right to inherit the throne of her country. Her father, the king, is an asshole, and in turn Theodora’s main character arc will be about becoming queen not for her fathers approval, but the well being of her people. Without the avatar's influence, though, she won’t win the heroic game and fail to stop her father from invading the Rome esc country the games are held in.
Dietrich is obviously from Fodlan, an ancestry of Mercedes and Jeritza. He’s working for the Agarthans. They learned of a nabatian who’s set up shop in Dagda (The sovereign), and sent Dietrich to assassinate him. It’ll turn out there’s some shady business with the Sovereign, but also some genuine good intent as well. Eventually, Dietrich learns whatever method the Sovereign uses to grant wishes is slowly causing him to degenerate over the years. In the end, Dietrich kills the sovereign as a mercy kill.
Leda’s home village was burned down and destroyed by a corrupt noble who’s a big wig in the fantasy rome country the Heroic Games take place in. She goes through a revenge story arc of “don’t kill him for your personal satisfaction, do it to stop him from hurting more people”. She gained her dark powers by making a deal with the agarthans or a similar Dagdiun cult, so she’d have the power to get her revenge. The man she wants revenge on will end up being an important political ally for the other lords to achieve their aims, thus forcing her into conflict with them.
In the Golden Ending, the avatar finds a way to kill Leda’s revenge target without fucking over the other lords. The shadier dealings of the Sovereign are made to light, but also a way to stop them without killing the Sovereign himself, bringing Cai and Dietrich on board. And with the help of the other lords and the avatar, Theodora’s able to ascend the throne and stop her father from invading. It turns out the Sovereigns' wish granting macguffin was secretly part of a plan to make a new physical vessel for Sothis to inhabit, but it fails and turns into a big final boss monster. Heroes win. Looks like the real way to grant your wishes was the friends we made along the way. Our fortunes certainly weaved together. Get a CG with whoever you decided to marry. The end.
There will be shapeshifting units, but only a small handful of specific units can be promoted into them for lore reasons.
The guns are ranged gauntlets powered by magic.
The game takes place before the events of Three Houses, but after the red canyon, on the continent of Dagda. So it’s like a prequel/ sidequel.
Similar hub area and calendar system to Three Houses. However, a main story map happens at the end of every week instead of every month.
There will be a fair bit of map reuse. Some maps are used for shared chapters. Other maps are visited at different times in the lord's stories, featuring different enemy layouts and win conditions.
There will be 3-5 gay options of either gender. Somehow, there will be two obvious characters that are super popular with lgbt audiences that are straight.
Mouse joycon mode integration.
Damn... It looks like we really aren't getting another Fortune's Weave trailer until the summer direct. I can't imagine releasing a second trailer a month before the summer of gaming. If the leaks about it being a summer game are true, then it's probably in the business sense and it's coming out September at the earliest. But considering what the leaks said about a potential new Starfox game being revealed this month, there's a decent chance Fortune's Weave won't be a summer release after all.
HOPEFULLY this means Fortune's Weave is gonna get enough time to cook. I like Three Houses, but it definitely came out compromised in a lot of ways. Especially in regards to Crimson Flower and Verdant Wind. Still, can't deny the wait for more info is killing me, man. Even more so than the wait for Three Houses. I think it's because the first trailer just left so much open about what the game will be like.
Yeah, at this point, my pet theory is that Fortune's Weave was planned for around a September release, but they've been holding off because of GTA6. Don't wanna get gobbled up and all that. And now that we maybe, hopefully for real this time know GTA6's release date, Nintendo's deciding on an official release date for Fortune's Weave.
I'm still thinking we won't get a trailer until the June direct. Feels like the new Star Fox trailer/ direct was the latest possible cut off point for big trailers until the direct. But then again, I wouldn't exactly be disappointed to be wrong.
Kinda conflicted on if I should keep watching Marriagetoxin. The first three episodes are pretty good, but now it's obvious the story's going in more of a harem/ bachelor story format. And that's fine on it's own, but, like... Ironically, the problem is that the show did such a good job at endearing me to Himekawa. Like, not only is she the kinda woman I'd fall for in real life, but she also has a really strong and compelling dynamic with Gero. In fact, she kinda seems like his ideal match in a lot of ways. She's a part of the underworld so the assassin thing isn't a turn off. Both have strong moral codes, both have strong desires to one day establish warm family's, and she's able to save Gero when he overestimates himself. I'd love to watch an anime about this assassin and art thief getting together with the help of their conman wingman.
But with the addition of more love interests, this could go a couple different ways. If Himekawa's the best one, well you peaked at the start and the other bachelorettes feel like filler. If they're all just as good, well, if feels kinda daunting and exhausting to get invested in a bunch of potential romances only for one to win. Poly route? Idk, maybe that could work, but it sounds unlikely.
And then of course there's the blonde elephant in the room: Kinosaki. Simultaneously out of the running and the obvious winner depending on how ballsy the mangaka is. On one hand, it'd be cool if Gero and Kinosaki got together, a real shake up for the genre. And they do have a lot of strong chemistry together. But if Kinosaki is gonna be the winner... then all the focus on the other girls will feel like a waste of time.
Truly, an odd case of the romance writing in a harem/ bachelor anime being too strong for it's own good.
Well, now that I'm done watching the latest episode of Witch Hat Atelier, let's check youtube real quick and-WHAT THE FUCK!!!???
Can’t sleep…. so Gnome
On one hand, I've wanted a Digimon v-pet on mobile for years, so it sucks Digimon Up is a gacha. On the other, those sprites look so good I kinda want the game to last a while. At least until we get sprites of the Royal Knights, and the Olympos XII, and the Liberator mons... okay, there are a lot of sprites I want to see.
The amazing digital humans!
As a straight guy, I don’t often get supper invested in mlm ships because, well, I'm primarily attracted to women and all. There are still gay ships I like, or think are fun, but only a few have ever had me actively thinking about them at night. And the common denominator is that I see my flaws and insecurities reflected in both of the men. Always just found that kind of weird.
So uh... I recently binge read Witch Hat Atelier last week and... yeah, another ship to the collection.

I think it's because the first trailer just left so much open about what the game will be like.
Also on a much lighter note, as someone who has played most of the Fire Emblem games, is there anything you specifically do NOT want to see in Fortune's Weave? Lessons you really have been learned from previous Fire Emblem games?
The main lesson I want them to learn is not to make Fire Emblem games like Engage or Fates anymore. That's all I want. I want a story which at least attempts to be about something more and other than the protagonist's personal power fantasy.
Three Houses was such a breath of fresh air and such a good Fire Emblem game because it was attempting to engage with some questions about power and politics, and it forced you to make exclusive choices that had a personal cost to the protagonist. Edelgard, Dimitri or Claude, if you want to follow one, it will cost you your relationship to the others, their lives will develop in ways that you as the player cannot control. They have their own agendas and politics, and will pursue their own ideas and ideals, even if it leads them into direct conflict with you.
Much can be written about how well Three Houses does any of this, but what matters to me is that it made the attempt, which is more than can be said for Engage or Fates, games which are obsessively laser-focused on coddling and rewarding the player.
Engage is like "what if all the coolest dudes that ever existed in the universe ever were all your friends and they were all on your team and you all teamed up to fight the bad guy with all the coolest moves and powers of all time WHOOO!!! 10x Kaioken Super Kamehameha Final Flash!!!!"
Meanwhile Fates is like "hey. you can fuck anyone you want to. You can make them all fuck each other! Incest? You want incest? We can make incest happen, we will invent an excuse why the incest is okay, you can fuck your sister. Anyone can fuck your sister! You should rub this 3D model of her with your stylus. You want the extra special Good Ending where everyone survives and you can fuck everyone from both sides and make them all fuck each other also? $20 DLC."
Both games present worlds where literally everything that happens within them is fundamentally subordinate and irrelevant, next to granting the protagonist as much agency and validation as they could possibly want.
And I'm not going to deny that there's fun to be had in playing Fantasy Matchmaker to do a bit of light class-optimization eugenics, or that it's fun to 100% your way through every possible relationship with your protagonist to see how they all play out. But I want those things to be in service to story that actually has something (literally anything!) on its mind that it wants to say beyond just "hey wouldn't it be neat if your character got to do this cool/sexy thing??"
Fortune's Weave seems to be playing in the aesthetic space of ancient Rome, and seems to be the most direct actual follow-up to Three Houses, so... cautious hopes from me that it will be trying to actually say something or other about the topic of empire.
Fortune's Weave got a PEGI rating! The rating itself is nothing special, standard Fire Emblem fair. But hopefully this means we'll get news soon.
I think Jax in the anime scene in episode 5 is really good as a microcosm of his character because his first reaction is to be like "ugh anime is so lame" but when the others push back he ends up saying he dislikes slice-of-life anime specifically. but if he really wasn't into anime he wouldn't know or care about that distinction in the first place. he first tries to act as if he's not into anime, but he is, he just doesn't want to have something in common with Gangle because he thinks that would make him look bad. he's embarrassed. note how he also very pointedly pauses before calling Gangle "one of those... losers" for liking anime, which at least to me implied he was going to say weeaboo, which is a word that implies more insider knowledge. girl is SO afraid of being caught liking something, and especially something a girl likes.
I highly doubt it'll happen in Fortune's Weave, but if we ever get a third game using the Three Houses formula, I think it'd be cool if they brought child units and a second generation back. Via timeskip, obviously. Different combinations of parents causing units to have different potential sets and learnable abilities on top of different growth rates. There's a lot of potential there. Also, it's just been a while since they did a second generation.
The power of copium. It flows through my veins!!!
So… According to one NateTheHate, we aren’t getting a General Direct until June. However, Fortune’s Weave will be a summer release.
The next Fortune’s Weave trailer can’t be until the next direct. At the latest release date (end of august) that’d still only give it two and a half months for a press cycle. So with that in mind, I think it’s safe to say we’ll get either an overview trailer, or a dedicated direct in April or May, now that the hype cycle for the Mario Galaxy Movie’s coming to an end.
If I had to guess, it’ll be either the week of 5th-11th, or the 19th-30th. 1-4 is the Mario Movies release week. 12-18 is Tomodachi Life's release week. Also there’s a high chance Splatoon Raiders will also get its overview trailer and/ or direct in April too.
