April's theme is PURPOSE – and we want to hear your story! Three speakers will be chosen for our second virtual event, scheduled for April 17. Presentations should be approximately seven minutes in length. Apply by Tuesday, March 31 at 5 p.m. We will announce the chosen speakers on Monday, April 6. (If chosen, you will get virtual coaching before the big day.)

What’s the best advice you’ve received? Life is more of an adventure than a responsibility.
Who do you most admire and why? My oldest son Grayson. The kid has it made, and the world is his. Also – Will Smith – he is an all-around good dude.
What’s your secret superpower? Making you believe it is that easy.
If you had 5 minutes to teach someone something new, what would you teach them? How to work a record player.
What have you created that you are most proud of and why? I have created a career off of passion. I think a lot of people are afraid to bet on themselves, they choose a career and work jobs they do not like.
What is your favorite thing about living in Omaha? Access to opportunity. If you are a go-getter – you can get it.
If you had a theme song, what would it be? “Soda Soap” by Master Ace

Meet Bart Vargas!
Did you miss September’s event featuring Bart Vargas? Learn a little more about him here!
We caught up with Bart to learn some fun facts.
What is your favorite food? My wife's Coffee au Poivre steak. It is simply the best prepared steak I have ever had.
What have you created that you are most proud of and why? My teaching, and how it has influenced the work my students have gone on to do. From the ones who went on to Graduate programs, to the ones that are now Artists and graphic designers.
What is the most interesting place you’ve ever traveled to? Baku, Azerbaijan. In 2015, I was commissioned to build a sculpture for the opening of a new museum in the capitol.
What is your favorite thing about living in Omaha? That as a Visual Artist, I can run an international career from my hometown.
Who do you admire? Why? My wife, Bekah Jerde. She's been through a lot in life, yet has an undying selflessness, and works hard to make her community and state better place for everyone.
How long would you last in a zombie apocolypse? I'd do pretty well in a zombie apocalypse. In fact, my wife says that is one of the reasons she married me.
If you had a theme song, what would it be? Do You Realize?? by the Flaming Lips

Jaguar James is a soul rock band that features funky dance grooves and power soul anthems. The four-piece band has recently been nominated as Best New Artist for the Omaha Entertainment Arts Awards and are preparing to record their first studio EP this winter.

Altruism into Action
It’s an unusual art competition – that doubles as a food drive! For our 24 Hours of Impact project, bring at least 10 nonperishable food items on July 13, grab some CreativeMorning friends and together, create unique “CANstruction” designs. After the masterpieces are assembled and winners announced, we’ll pack up and donate the items to Food Bank for the Heartland. Clark & Company was created by triplet siblings from Omaha. The Indie R&B band has recorded and released 42 original songs, all with mature melodies, fresh arrangements and a stirring signature style that takes listeners on a lyrical journey.
Clark & Company has been nominated five times since 2014 in the Omaha Entertainment & Arts Awards for Best R&B, Best Blues, Best Jazz, Best Pop and Best Local Album.

After the CreativeMornings on Friday, January 13, with guest Dana Altman, I left with a buzz… the natural kind of buzz that comes from laughing a bit, having thoughts provoked and being surrounded by spirited, creative people.
I’ve worked with producer/director Dana in the past – so I already knew I liked the guy. But it was a trip (more like a wild ride) actually hearing him talk about his process. The title of his presentation? “Mystery: The Basis of My Insanity.” So, that set the stage. For Dana, it’s all about preparation (ingesting as much data as possible), incubation (letting it stew and seeing what emerges), and verification (making sure the end product fits the bill). He touched on the psychology of creativity, veered into the genesis of Friday the 13th (among other topics), and left us with a quote from Neil Armstrong: “Mystery creates wonder and wonder is the basis of man’s desire to understand.” I loved that – enough to “sticky note it” and affix it to my laptop. January’s event is located at the Omaha Design Center! The space was created by event planners for event planners. It is a beautiful blank slate where any event can leave their creative mark.
