We’d managed to grab another chat with Sister Gloria, with regards to where and how she grew up in Curaçao and St Kitts as well as her moving to the UK. Here’s a snippet about her experience when she was younger. Full interview to be uploaded soon.
Christmas Celebration
Before the Monday club closed for the christmas, the ladies decided to have a gathering, whereby members of the church were all welcome to join them and feast on some delicious caribbean cuisine.

Alisha had managed to bring in a few photos from the day to share with a few of the Ladies, this was also a good opportuntiy for them to reflect how they thought the event went over the two days. Such as what they enjoyed most about the event and evaulating what more they would like to achieve when conducting more events like this is the future.
West Park Community Centre Fundays 29th - 30th Oct
For the first time at the Church God of Properchy, West Park Community Centre, Handsworths hosted a two day funday event. Full activities, arts and crafts for members of the local community during the half term.
Over the two days we had some of the elders from the congeratation teaching a few of the youngsters how to crochet and knit.
There were also printmaking workshops and badge making and ribbon makings available for thoes who were feeling creative, conducted by Hatty Sutton.
There was a photography station set up where both kids and adults had the opportunity to dress up and pose and act out in front of the camera or even just to have a nice photo to take home to their loved ones.
For all thoes who were feeling a lot more active, they had also provided outdoor activties everybody to play, such as archery, swingball, connect four, and many more.
Special thanks to members of Friction Arts and Active Streets for supporting the event. Hopefully more events are to take place in the foreseeable future.
A visit to the MAC to visit ctrl-shift uncovered inspiration for our own fabric art project, exploring Windrush and travel. With 62 artists contributing there was a lot to see in a huge range of styles - from miniature beds to Squidgy suits to dance in.
One particular area we found interesting was ‘Theme Three - The stuff that surrounds us’. From a distance we thought Eszter Bornemiza’s ‘City Skin’ was a dress, but as we came closer more comments follwed: ‘It looks like a map’, I can see a grid’, ‘It’s made from newspaper!’.
Vanesa Rolf’s ‘Breath’ was quite abstract and overlooked at first. From a distance comments started, ‘It looks like mountains, but what’s that there?’ Every one saw something different in the fabric, but mostly on a theme of sea, nature or landscape. ‘I can see, what’s those birds - starlings, murmurations.’
It was then interesting to see what the artist had written - ‘...explores her response to loss; aiming to capture emotions that are hard to articulate despite their universal nature. The work continues to reference cartographic imagery...’
There was also the fabulous Vanley Burke window outside the exhibition and a wall celebrating the contributions of the African Caribbean community in Birmingham. We bought his book to show everyone on Monday!

Community Summer Fair, Edgbaston
At the Edgbaston Community Centre, we joined Lee Bank community groups to celebrate our communities. We demonstrated crochet, showcased our work and sold our hand made crocheted clothing.
In today’s session we spoke about how the group enjoyed trip to Barmouth. Sandra also popped by before she went off to Norway, to discuss her ideas to the group and furthering the project.
We had also discussed matters of the up and coming Edgbaston Community Summer Fair and what the clothes the group wanted to sell.
Day Trip to Barmouth
The group went on a day trip to Wales, were they spent to day by the seaside. Alisha Nichols had managed to conduct a few interviews with a few of the sisters about differnt topics such as where they came from and their upbringing, as well as sharing different expereiences on parentings.

At aged 13 Sister Gloria travelled from Curacao to St. Kitts to Birmingham, following her father to our ‘streets paved with gold’.

On another sunny June day we visited the NEC for the Craft fair. Some fabulous materials, crafts and workshops which we had a go at and brought back some inspiration for our own craft projects!
In today session with Alisha Nichols, having created the pots from last week and managing to get them fired using a kiln, we had decided to add a spot of colour to them using arcylic paint and to add a glossy effect at the end of them.
Using only primary colours, Alisha had taught them the fundementals of mixing primary colours in order to create secondary colours.
With this session, we had also discussed with the group what other creatives would they like to be involved with and what new skills would they like to learn.
For our sixth session led by Alisha Nichols. We got ourselves stuck in working with clay and learning specific skills on how to create both pinch pots as well as coil pots.
