Half-Life 2 - Headcrab Zombie Sounds

Headcrab zombies are pretty creepy by themselves - the way they move towards you, how they came to be... but the secret of their cries is the most horrifying thing.

When put in reverse, the zombies can be heard to be saying "Oh God, help! Help me!" and "Get it off me!". If that's not disturbing enough, if you set them on fire they start saying in reverse what can be interpreted as "My life's fading!" "My eyes sting! Gaaah!" "Put it out!".

Not a game to play at night, that one.

Doom 2 - John Romero's Head

If you use the cheat "idclip" and go behind the face of the game's final boss, you will meet the true (?) final boss, the head of John Romero, the creator of the Doom games. When you enter this room, you'll hear a strange, distorted noise. Played backwards, it's John Romero himself saying "To win the game, you must kill me, John Romero".

Since you can't easily translate backwards language, you'll have to go with your gut reaction and just shoot the creepy head. Kill him and you do, indeed, beat the game.

Super Mario 3D Land - GHOST!

At the end of World 4-4, if you hang around for about 30 seconds or so, a ghost will appear in the background. It won't do anything, just float there, watching. It isn't seen at any other point in the game, which is perhaps the most unsettling part. What is its story?

Do you see it? It's just in front of the tree furthest to the right behind the fence. That face...

The ghost will fade away again after a few moments. Then you can assure yourself you were just seeing things.

Luigi's Mansion - The Hanged Shadow

Here's an interesting one. After the boss battle of level 3, you will advance into the telephone room and answer two calls. While Luigi is speaking, there will be a flash of lightning and Luigi's shadow will look like it's hanging from the ceiling.

This one is interesting because no one seems to know if it's a glitch or the devs intentionally put it in there. Either way, it's hella creepy!

Mortal Kombat 9 - Krypt Monster

In the fighting game Mortal Kombat 9, there is an area called the Krypt. If you stand idle in this area too long, this beauty will suddenly appear in your face. And that's it. That's the Easter egg. Come on devs, be a little more creative!

Call of Duty: Finest Hour - Ghost Room

If you want a creepy Easter egg in your game, add a ghost. If you want a really creepy Easter egg in your game, add a ghost room. And that's what they did in CoD: Finest Hour.

Near the beginning of the Underground Passage mission, you will find a boarded up door. Throw two grenades at it, then go over to it and use the action button, then throw one more grenade for good measure. This will open the door and show you how dumb you were for doing that.

This dark room is full of creepy stuff. Wonky pictures of children across the walls, a giant caged rat, floating candles... and the worst part is the seemingly empty crib at the side, where if you approach it, a ghostly boy will appear inside, look at you, then walk away.

Should have left that door alone...

Grand Theft Auto V - Ghost on the Cliff

In GTA V, between 23:00 and 0:00 on a cliff near the peak of Mount Gordo there is a strange white speck floating just above it when viewing from the naked eye. If you use your sniper rifle and zoom in on it, you'll see that it is a... ghost?

If you head to the top of the cliff, the ghost will fade away as you near her (she's very shy). But you will see a message written in blood that reads "JOCK". This is the beginning of learning about a very interesting little side story about how this girl died. Hint: She didn't trip.

Fallout: New Vegas - Casual Head Spinning

In early versions of Fallout: New Vegas, during the intro you may encounter a glitch involving the character Doc Mitchell having a conversation with you... while his head casuallly spins in a full circle. Sadly, there is no dialogue option to ask him why exactly he's chosen this moment to channel The Exorcist when presumably you're talking about something serious.

Of course, he may just be testing you. Best not to mention anything.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Movesets Mess Up

Using hacks to swap characters' movesets in Super Smash Bros. Brawl makes for some pretty disturbing sights. Above is a horrifically mutated Pikachu with Ganondorf's moveset. His limbs have had to stretch - or maybe he evolved - to fit Ganondorf's skeleton. This Pikachu is known by the Internet as "Manchu", which just about sums up what we're seeing. I don't think Ash is going to want him back.

Seriously, look this hack up. The terrifying possibilities are endless.

Metal Gear Solid - Get Out Of My Head!

Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid can read minds. But he can't read my mind because I'm the player and he can't know me, right? Wait, how does he know I like Legend of Zelda? MIND READER!

The game can read your memory card, and the games on that influence what Psycho Mantis says. He can now expose you and your character's true nerdiness. Would this be breaking the fourth wall or smashing it to smithereens with a sledgehammer?

Halo 3 - Caveman Family

You can stumble upon this lovely family while in the wilderness, which can come as a scary surprise considering how it is completely deviant from Halo's theme. And those smiles. Oh god, those smiles.

Grand Theft Auto IV - IT'S ALIVE!

If you take a helicopter to the Statue of Liberty and enter a door marked "No hidden content this way" (hmm), you can climb up an extremely tall ladder that leads into the statue's "chest", you'll find a red chamber containing a massive, beating heart held in the air by chains.

If that's not disturbing enough, you'll also find that the statue's face heavily resembles that of a smiling Hillary Clinton, which is possibly the most unsettling thing in gaming history.

Pokemon X and Y - Ghost Girl

In one of the buildings in Lumiose City, using the elevator to get to the second floor begins a cutscene. The lights get dimmer, the music goes silent and a girl appears behind you. She floats around you in slow motion whilst you're thinking "what is this game what is going on who is this girl is this about to go full-on horror on me", until she stops and says "No, you're not the one...". Then she disappears and you can change your pants.

You can meet her again in another building in Lumiose, where she tells you to be quiet because she's listening for the elevator. Is she the most chilling character in any Pokemon game?

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Hell Valley Sky Trees

In the game's Shiverburn Galaxy, atop a cliff stands three ghoulish creatures watching you from above. Who are they? What are they? Our only hint is in their code names in the game's file - "Hell Valley Sky Trees".

I can agree with the hell part but those are definitely not trees!

Assassin's Creed II - Giant Squid!?

In the Assassin Tomb under Santa Maria della Visitazione, if you pull a certain lever and look down into the water for about one minute, you'll be able to see a massive creature moving in the water. If you're a fearless one, you can pull the lever again and wait for another minute or so, which will trigger another cutscene where a huge squid tentacle emerges from the water and swipes at Ezio.

I don't think dodging giant squids are what Ezio had in mind when he became an assassin...

Psychonauts - Milla's Nightmare

There is a certain chest at Milla's party that, if you tried to open it, prompts a comment from Milla telling you that she wouldn't advise going in there. If you completely ignore her and jump in, you'll find yourself in a hellish cage thing with nightmares dancing around outside. You are able to hear cries of children, and messages such as "Help us, Milla!" and "Why did you let us die?" appear on the screen.

Once you've recovered from that, you can piece together Milla's past. Hint: It's not very pleasant.
