At first, there’s no sound, just a god awful weight across your legs, across your shoulders, enormous pressure that makes it hard for your ribs to fully expand, gulp down air, convert oxygen molecules to carbon dioxide. Weight and heat and something slick beneath your cheek. Pain in long bright lines, and ugly, wet warmth soaking into your skin.
You come back slowly, dragged up through black water as if something had grabbed you by the hair and pulled, lungs full of ash, every part of you arriving separately and screaming as it does.
Then the sound comes back; a low, continuous tone somewhere above the range of hearing, pressing into the inside of your skull. Underneath of it, muffled and wrong, something that sounds like an alarm. Something that might be a voice. The sounds exist at a remove, packed in cotton, arriving delayed, like a broadcast signal bounding off something too far away.
You open your eyes.
Or…
You try to. One opens. The other is stuck, something dried and tacky pulling at your lashing, sealing them half shut.
There’s concrete pressed against your face. (Why are you laying on the ground? What happened-) A smear of gray inches from your mouth, dusted white in places, cracked dark in others. Something drips onto it, a red bloom spreading into the powder like ink onto paper.
Blood, your mind supplies, helpfully.
Not yours, another part of you answers immediately, stupidly, hopefully.
Then your ribs hitch and the pain answers that for you.
Oh.
Your blood too.
Oh but there’s just something about simon who has been MIA for a good few months, maybe even a couple of years until he finally appears on your doorstep again one random day
but he’s not the simon you remembered. he’s not the same man who used to put socks on your feet whilst you slept so your toes wouldn’t get cold. or the man who would cook a completely seperate meal to his own if you didn’t like what he was having.
his eyes are empty. his touch is rough. callous even. sometimes you wake up in the night and he’s just sat in the corner of the room, staring at you through the darkness as you slept
your friends have stopped inviting you places out of fear that you’ll bring him along. his cagey erratic behaviour is not fun for them. the way his eyes flick around the room, landing on any potential threat. fingers flexing at his side, ready to grab his boot knife if needed
he scares you, but he still fucks you so good and makes sure you’re fed and warm
You're the one who taught Simon how to be soft in the first place, and once in a while you see that version of him creep through the wall that was built by whatever trauma he survived while he was missing. You never say anything when it happens, you know he's on a hair trigger these days. The times he doesn't realize he's being soft are great. Words can't explain how much you missed the little things, like the way his thumb would mindlessly trace shapes on the side of your knee while you were sat on the couch with your legs across his lap. Never in a million years did you think something so small could mean so much. When he does realize, though, he reacts almost violently. Stands up so abruptly you almost go toppling off the couch. He'd feel bad about that if he wasn't in full fight or flight mode. If he was the man he used to be. If the version of Simon you helped create hadn't been left in some dark hole in some foreign country.
If you're lucky he's just going to lock himself in one of the bathrooms for the rest of the night. Pacing until the the sun cracks the horizon the next morning. Sitting in the bath tub, staring at the wall as he comes down from the panic. You'll manage to get into the bathroom the next morning and find him there. Eyes bloodshot as he dissociates, seeing god knows what against that tiled wall. You'll be able to coax him out and into bed eventually. He apologizes just once, a single tear rolling down his cheek. That's all he's capable of anymore.
The nights that aren't lucky, he grabs his keys and disappears. You don't sleep these nights. You're the one left pacing until dawn. Some of these nights, you'll get a call from one of his teammates. He's on base. He's running the track, he's on the shooting range, he's running drills, something, ANYTHING, that helps him realize that he's still got the skills to keep himself safe.
Some of these nights you reach out to anyone and everyone you can think of. Nobodys seen him. Nobody knows where he ends up on these nights and you struggle with the thought that maybe he'll end up doing something he really can't come back from this time. The first few times this happened you spend the entire night panicking. Screaming, crying, throwing up, damn near ending up in the hospital because you can't bear the thought of losing him AGAIN. After a while you become somewhat numb to it. Settling for pacing the living room all night, checking out the window for his truck or his bike. Sometimes he stays gone for days at a time. You don't sleep. You don't eat. You just wait. And wait. And wait. He always comes home eventually, both of you now worse for wear. He pulls you into a crushing hug and both of you end up sleeping like the dead for several days afterward. The way he fucks you after that, it's like he's fighting his demons back into whatever cage he keeps them in inside his head. It's rough, it's messy, it's so good you forget how much you suffered while he was gone. You end up bruised and sore, but you're both put back together as well as you can be these days, and you know it'll be a while before he has an episode like that again. He never apologizes after these episodes. You know he's sorry anyway. It never gets brought up again. You go back to living life as normally as possible, which is to say, barely normal at all. He jumps at shadows, you pretend not to notice. Eventually the cycle will repeat.

i love simon who easily leans into his desires—feeling the clenching of his heart and cataloguing the change right away; still waters shifting into raging waves—but there is something soooo good about simon who denies himself the pleasure (of being honest with his wants; of being with you.)
simon who sees you and feels so deep in the pit of his stomach what you do to him so he just. ignores you. if not mentally and emotionally blocking the way his walls crumble at the mere sound of your laughter, then physically putting distance between you two.
can you believe it? you’ve got the boogeyman running away just because his greed threatens to spill from the corners of his mouth—his gums aching with the need to bite; to sink his fangs into your tender parts until he’s claimed you to the bone—and simon, for all the ways in which he learned how to finally be selfish, reels himself in and cages the thrashing storm in the depths of his chest, smothering it underneath his ribs.
his soul stretches underneath muscle and skin, trying to claw its way out because you’re right there. so close, so near, so delectable, so beautiful.
hishishishis—
no. not his.
he won’t allow it.
(simon who sees his greed as something so poisonous so he tries to save you from himself. it is futile—your desires are greater than his.)
[ghost!reader masterlist]
life with simon settles into a rhythm without either of you discussing it. just two people - okay, one man and one ghost - cohabiting in a way that feels almost alarmingly natural.
until he brings a dog home.
some rescue he saw at the shelter - a big, sad looking thing that spends the first two weeks of his life in the house hiding under the bed whilst simon tries to tempt him out with chicken and you stare warily.
but slowly, the dog - riley - settles in too.
The Incident happens on a morning like any other. the two of you sat at the kitchen table, back door open to let the breeze in, a mug of coffee each - although yours remains untouched, like usual - and riley exploring the garden.
you're flicking through the local paper that gets pushed through his letterbox each week, he's absentmindedly checking his emails on his phone - until he feels riley's nose against his knee, and something land on his foot.
he looks down to see riley's brown eyes and a human rib bone next to his socked foot.
he picks it up between to fingers, holds it out between you. "what the fuck?"
you glance up from your paper, "oh. that's probably mine." you reply absentmindedly, attention immediately dropping back to the article you're reading. "did you know they're having a jumble sale at the church on saturday? you should go."
simon pinches the bridge of his nose. "sweetheart, i don't give a fuck about the jumble sale. i give a fuck about the fact the dog's just dropped your fuckin' rib on my foot."
you look up at him over your paper again, eyebrows furrowed. "well it's not like i'm using it, is it?"
simon blinks. slowly. because no - you're not using it. but that isn't exactly what he meant.
"dove," he tries again, rephrasing. "why are your bones in my garden and not in you know, a cemetery or some shite?"
you frown again. "our garden." you correct with a pout, before you carefully fold up the paper, place it between you on the dining table and reach for the rib in his hand, holding it up to the light like you're inspecting it. "mm, definitely mine. too big to be the cat's."
he groans. "you tellin' me i've got a dead cat in my garden as well, sweetheart?" he reaches out, pokes the end of your nose with his finger. "yer avoidin' the question. why th' fuck are you in our garden?"
a pointed emphasis on the our, like he's learned his lesson.
your lips press into a flat line.
and for the first time since the two of you started cohabitatating willingly you choose to vanish from sight, rib bone clattering to the table as you disappear from existence.
simon stares at the place you once were, feels the cold patch he used to be so familiar with pass through him and leave the kitchen, the door slamming ominously behind you like you're also closing the door on this conversation entirely.
simon glances at the rib, then at riley. "well that seems like a touchy subject." he mutters, rubbing a hand down his face, fingers catching against stubble.
riley just whines in response.

he said your name.
out loud. for the first time in… enough time that it feels almost foreign to your ears. like an echo of something you might have recognised once upon a time - a memory of a memory.
for a long moment, nothing happens on your end of the sofa. simon stares, unflinching, almost daring you to do something. to appear. to make the lights flicker.
anything.
he begins to think he’s made a mistake. a tactical error. that any moment now the cold patch will disappear entirely and he’ll be left wondering about the… thing haunting his house for the rest of his life.
until you just appear.
one second there’s nothing. the next, the air bends slightly and you’re sitting on the opposite end of his couch.
you look like your photo.
you look... solid.
and a little pissed off.
for a moment you don’t say anything, just glare at the man whose home you’ve been haunting for god-knows-how-long.
“didn’t think of just asking my name? had to go and dig around for it like i’m some secret to uncover? like you've walked into a mystery novel and not my house?”
simon blinks.
that was… not what he expected. not your voice, not the words.
your voice sounds like an echo, layered and distant, like it’s not quite coming from the same plane of existence as he inhabits.
“weren’t exactly like you gave me much choice, love.” he replies, voice even. “you’ve been fuckin’ stubborn. nothing but a cold patch for days. figured if i wanted a name, i’d 'ave to go lookin' myself.”
you falter, the sharp edge of your annoyance softening.
“i… wasn’t ready to be seen. not like this." you admit quietly. “didn’t know if you’d call an exorcist the moment i appeared properly.”
“right. an exorcist. chantin' and swingin' herbs and shite?” simon’s mouth twitches into that almost-smirk you’re starting to recognise. “didn’t even know if you could appear whenever you wanted. thought that little flicker the other night might’ve just been a one-off from… y’know. the wankin' in my bed.”
you’re suddenly glad you’re dead - no blood to rush to your cheeks at your housemates blunt assessment of your endeavors a few nights ago. “it wasn’t… a one-off.” you reply, awkwardly. "been able to um, appear. for a while. didn't know that the uh, bed thing would trigger it." you sound so embarrassed he can't help but find it endearing. like a kid that's been caught doing something they absolutely shouldn't have been.
silence settles between you.
then simon breaks it.
“'ow long 'ave you been dead?”
you arch a brow. “it’s rude to ask a ghost their age. or whatever the saying is. or are manners in this decade as dead as i am?”
simon freezes. blinks. then lets out a short huff of air - almost a laugh - surprised that a ghost can joke at their own expense.
“right." he says evenly.
another pause stretches, heavier this time.
“you been alone long?” he asks. it's the same question, really. but he's unwilling to drop it yet.
you shrug, almost casual. “a while. don’t exactly keep track of time anymore.” your eyes flick away, then return to his. “it’s fine. i've got used to it.”
there’s another moment of heavy silence as you look away again. “it’s better now, though.” a quiet admittance.
simon reads between the lines. it’s better because he’s here. something tight in his chest loosens.
“alrigh'” he says after a long pause. “house rules. this place is yours as much as it is mine - more yours, maybe. keep brewin; the coffee if you want. keep doin' whatever the fuck you’ve been doin' to the garden to stop it turning into a shitshow. keep visitin' me at night… if you want to.”
your eyes widen slightly in quiet delight.
“in return,” he continues, “no more hiding as a cold patch when i say the wrong thing, or when you’re embarrassed. and if you want me to stop digging? i’ll stop. but i don't like not knowin' things. so… talk to me when you’re ready. or don’t, an' i'll go back to the library." a compromise for intel in the only way he knows how to make one.
you nod slowly.
“deal." you whisper. then, softer, “but… don’t call me that. my name. it doesn’t even feel like mine anymore.”
for the first time in the conversation, you look genuinely sad, lips downturned.
simon knows what it’s like when people stop saying your name - when it stops feeling like yours, when it starts feeling more like a cage than a label. he nods and reaches out, tentatively covering your hand with his. the contrast between his warm, rough skin and your chill makes him shiver, but he doesn’t pull away.
and for the first time in decades? the house feels less like a prison and more like a home to you.
ghost!reader masterlist
"come back."
two words uttered as you flickered back out of existence again right in front of simon riley's eyes.
a plea? a command? a desperate cry for attention from someone just as lonely as you? you weren't sure.
the words echoed around in the matter that made up your undead head until they were all you could hear. all you could think about.
but you don't come back.
not the next day.
or the next.
not in that solid form, anyway.
you don't appear in the house as anything other than a cold patch of air. the coffee still gets brewed. two mugs - one always untouched - get left by the pot in the morning.
at least he knows when the air next to him drops a few degrees it's definitely you now.
simon continues to work on the house like a man who has nothing better to do (he doesn't). but now? he talks aloud whilst he does. it starts off with inane chatter, complaints about the layers of lead paint he's having to peel away to get to original features.
"survived eighteen years of gettin' shot at and it's the fuckin' paint that's gonna take me out."
but when he realises the cold spot is staying as he works? he starts talking to you. treating you like you're… there. real. a person rather than a… ghost. “pass me the sandpaper, love.” he mutters while stripping old paint from the windowsill. the block slides across the floor a second later. he makes a noise that might be a laugh. “cheers.”
he spends the morning in the lounge, painstakingly stripping the window frames, until he starts to see the wood below. "you're gonna be watchin' me do this a while. 's takin' fuckin' ages." the cold patch settles against his left side, pressing against him, and he can almost imagine the way you're stood there next to him examining his handiwork.
but by early afternoon the silence starts to wear on him again.
so he makes a decision.
the local library is quiet. dusty. clearly underused.
and simon doesn't fit in at all.
he's too tall, too broad, too scarred for a place like this. the elderly librarian eyes him warily as he asks for local records - newspapers, property deeds, anything connected to his house. and then he sits, for hours, hunched over a tiny table as he flips through brittle pages with surprising care.
he finds what he needs near the end of his search.
a single newspaper article complete with photo.
old, faded, but clearly you.
and a house deed from a few months before the article.
the names match. the dates match. it all adds up.
what doesn't make sense are the words he's seeing in the article. it's not an obituary.
it's a missing person's alert.
simon stares at the photo for a long time. soft features. sad eyes. the garden in the background is in full bloom.
he makes a copy and drives home as the sun begins to set.
the house feels empty when he steps inside, but as he hangs his coat in the hallway and steps into the lounge, he senses it - you - the cold patch. on the far end of the sofa, the spot you seem to prefer.
quietly, he takes his own seat. flicks the telly on. leans back and scrubs a hand down his tired face.
you watch as he turns to face you, brown eyes searching the spot you're occupying for any hint of you other than the cold.
the quietly, carefully, he says your name.
thinking about simon riley buying an old fixer upper of a house in the countryside once he's retired and not realising it comes complete with a resident ghost.
you've been alone for... a long time. the house has been left to rot; empty apart from you.
then this… man arrives one day with a duffel bag and a singular cardboard box. big. blonde. scars on his face. brown eyes that look like they've seen too much and not enough at the same time. almost immediately he sets to work repairing leaky pipes - the drip that's annoyed you for your entire post-death existence disappears overnight. he strips layers of white gloss paint from original features; spends days painstakingly scraping the staircase bannister to reveal intricate wood carvings whilst you watch from your perch on a shelf, invisible but there.
he treats the place with… care.
and somehow that warms your heart even though it no longer beats.
you get used to your new housemate, start spending more time with him. sat in a chair at the table at dinner time, watching as he eats whatever basic meal he's cooked that night. propped up on a counter in the kitchen whilst he washes up, legs swinging in time to the offbeat tune he's whistling. curled up on the other end of his beat up couch as he watches some grainy world war two documentary and sips whiskey.
and when he goes to bed you follow, sliding in under the sheets behind him, curling up against his back, forehead pressed against his shoulder blade, fingers splayed across his ribs.
he wonders why his sheets always seem to stay so cold.
…and why the coffee pot is always already brewed when he wakes up.
…and why when he's having a wank in the shower he's sure he feels hands that aren't quite his own on his cock; fingertips tracing the vein on the underside, a cold palm cupping his balls.
he chooses not to question it, considering he's had the best orgasms of his life since he bought this place.
There are hardly any female werewolves because they break all the classic rules of femininity. They force you to confront female violence, strength, size, grotesqueness and uncontrollability. Historically female shapeshifters always shift into something dangerous (snake) or sleek (cat) or dainty (bird) but female werewolves ignore the masculine gaze completely. They're distorted beasts that have no ulterior motive except to destroy. Nothing about them is nurturing or modest. They're the opposite of what a woman "should be." Their omission from pop culture is not an accident.
I know this is maybe not the point of the post, but this reminded me of this beautiful poem called When My Wife Is A Werewolf by Rosamund Taylor which I really adore so I thought I would share it.
This is taken from a collection of contemporary queer Irish poetry called Queering the Green, which has some truly wonderful work in it and is available from The Lifeboat Press (currently sold out but hopefully available again soon if you're interested).
"Baked my babe into a cookie cause I miss him :("
Forgot I decorated Alphonse into a cookie and just had to draw this meme lol
You can make a movie with where the only white character is a man named Ray Cism whose one line of his 16 seconds of screen time is “I seriously hate women and minorities.” and you’ll find fifty bajillion reader x Ray Cism fanfics and renaissance style drawings of him with a halo of golden light
simon riley and his missus both quite smoking at the same time. something about dying of old age in each others arms rather than from some tobacco induced illness.
but you have one, together, every year.
like clockwork, on your anniversary, he fucks you like he's trying to merge your bodies together - foreheads touching, his cock buried inside you so deep there's nowhere left for him to go. then he rolls onto his back, pulls you against his broad, scarred chest and lights up a marlborough red so you can pass it back and forth between you; careful not to get ash on the covers.
it's a reminder, really, of the night you met in the smoking area in the pub just off base. the night he took you home and fucked you like he never wanted to be apart from you again for the very first time.
Imagine if simon had to leave you behind because you were badly injured on a mission?
He hid you away, safe, before getting the rest of the team. But when medical came you were gone..
No signs of struggle, no drag path, no blood.
No signs you existed.
They searched with dogs, choppers, men on the ground. But nothing was ever recovered.
No dog tags to give your family.
No body to bury.
No uniform to hang.
So weighted with guilt simon wonders everyday what happened to you.
Where to dragged off by enemy soldiers?
But no blood splatter...
No shreds from animals getting to you...no flesh torn.
So then what..?
He tried to move on but he couldn't, seeing visions of you in the dark, waking up in cold sweats..
He never should have left you behind..
One night when he sat on the couch, beer in hand, gear tossed to the side he wanted to watch some tv before calling it a day, but he couldn't turn the tv on for whatever reason.
He sat, slightly confused staring at the black screen before he heard his Radio crackle.
He checked it, maybe he was drunk...
But it was switched off, but static was still coming out, coming through on an old unused channel, with the right encryption files he could understand it now.
''I'm right where you left me...''
It was your voice!
He threw his radio clean across the room, it thudding against the wall heavily before falling to the floor.
He backed away from the radio, breathing heavily, years of mounted and suppressed emotions and trauma coming back crashing over him.
A scary thought came across his mind, Maybe he should answer..?
The radio breathed, then followed by a small sob.
He tried to answer but he was too choked up, trying to keep it together.
When Gaz came to check what the loud thud was, he found simon sitting on the floor, head in his hands, shaking violently.
Simon looked up as Gaz walked in, eyes bloodshot.
''Gaz...She's a carcass,but.. she still haunting me..''
men really be like “well this woman has studied this subject her whole life, and i am a man, so we have equal knowledge on this”
it’s ok you could have just said “i hate men”
okay, i hate men
