You know the more i look at people trying to be objective at ladybug the more i realize-this might be the one fandom i know where you cant be objective at all unless you were invovled in real time with the entire...mess. like...people who werent there when the senti theories happened months (years?) before we got senti adrien...did not see the crew just copy pasting it all. You have to learn at least some fandom lore to understand the actual lore due to how lazy the crew is and by god as a creative that is just. Just a Thing i have to live with.

Like, beyond the whole reading speed discourse (I genuinely think you should let people read slow or fast as they damn well please) there is a deliberate commercial aspect to the notion of reading lots of books per year. It didn't sprout out of nowhere. Goodreads challenging you to read as many books as possible cannot be divorced from the fact that books are a physical product that someone is trying to sell to you.

I truly hate capitalism. I feel like I'm being sold all kind of unfinished, badly edited books just for the sake of a quick cash grab. I see people in book fandom bitching when a sequel takes more than a year to release - even though the book would be more polished if it was given a bit more editing time. I see fandoms withering and die because people are busy running after the next new thing, always the next new thing. I see plots being reduced to sensationalism, plot twists no one could see coming because who has time for foreshadowing? No one is gonna reread the book anyway, right? And don't you want the 50$ special edition of that author's debut? What do you mean you don't know if it will be good? You don't have time to wait and see, you have to buy it now or get scalped on eBay the month after it releases. Now go do free advertising and beg for an ARC.

I love libraries! I use my library weekly! This isn't about not having access to everything I want to read!

A library is a consumer, the same as the rest of us. They have to buy the books and manage their collections.

And I'm not saying that paying for books is inherently bad! Authors deserve to be paid! People who produce and market the book deserve to be paid!

But my point is that capitalism is shaping up the media that is produced.

And focusing on producing huge amounts of books in a short span because you want to sell as much as possible? It impacts the quality of the stories we get. Whether that's by getting them in a bookstore, or in a library.

I think he’s positioned in a way female characters typically are in terms of playing second fiddle to the main hero(ine) but that barely contributes to his Problems as a character

The Big Thing about him imo is that the narrative lets him get away with a lot of shit which therefore means growth isn’t necessary and the only reason he gets away with anything in the first place is because he’s male

With the way the narrative demonizes female characters for considerably less, it’s a wonder anyone tries to make that argument

There’s something funny about people thinking a character having negative traits (weak, fragile, emotional) is sexist because those traits are feminine and not noticing that by defining femininity as being those traits they themselves are also being sexist

Like don’t get me wrong, there is definitely something to be said about traditional gender roles and characteristics in literature and media but when you yourself, in the process of deconstructing those roles and characteristics, conclude what is inherently feminine is the bad stuff, there’s still some self reflection necessary

Bringing it back to ML and adrichat

The series is not sexist because he’s a “damsel in distress” archetype. It is not sexist because he’s emotional or not as competent. It is not sexist because he’s “femme coded”. It is sexist for a bunch of other stuff, but not those.

That’s just trying to apply any -ism you can find to explain why a character that is privileged in almost every way is badly written when the real answer is simple: the writers are bad at their job. Adrien can have all of those traits and still be a good well-rounded character; the only trait you’d need to add to balance out all the negative or “feminine” traits is agency. That’s all there is to it.

TL;DR: adrichat’s bad writing is bot the result of some greater societal poison, it’s a table of people being bad at writing

Maribug: *has PTSD from seeing everyone she loves and herself dead at the hands of one of her best friends with said friend blaming their relationship for it, has everyone she knows turn their backs on her for someone they met like a week ago, loses her only guidance and confidant and later all the miraculous, is constantly humiliated and blamed for things that aren’t her fault with the universe itself bending to ensure that remains part of the status quo* *successfully avoids getting akumatized*

Do you think Adrien isn't as traumatized by being a hero as Marinette is?

Oh, that’s not even a question. Yes.

While I can acknowledge that his hero experience has had some sources of trauma (Chat Blanc - before the timeline reset, “killing” Aeon, finding out about the Chat Blanc timeline later and the nightmare about that, cataclysming Monarch, etc..), comparing his hero experience and any resulting trauma from it to Marinette’s…it is no contest.

Especially when Adrien’s trauma is usually only focused on for the episode a specific incident happens in and he seems unaffected the rest of the time. The main things that seemed to stick to put any damper on his mood is in Season 4 where he starts feeling left out and unnecessary to Ladybug due to more temp heroes joining in. And outside of that, being a hero was an escape from his shitty home life, it was a net positive in his life.

Marinette’s distress is focused on way more explicitly. Becoming a hero has done nothing but add stress to her life. Girl is stressed like 24/7. The writers go out of their way to place the blame on her in almost every bad situation she’s put in. Add in the fact that she also has more responsibilities put on her with being guardian and the threat of untold amounts of memory loss if she gives the title up…

Yeah it’s safe to say Adrien’s no where near as traumatized by being a hero as Marinette is.

There’s also the fact that whenever Adrien’s traumas are brought up, it’s always his home life stuff; he seems genuinely unaffected by anything involving heroics. To him, being a superhero is a social activity, not a stressful job, so he’s affected by it only in ways one would carrying out any other social activity. The job only carries as much weight and meaning as he ascribes it, and the writers seem intent on making him not care as a method of maintaining his comic relief role so ultimately any possible hero-related traumas are not worth caring about whereas his tragic home life is front and center ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Getting Adrie//nette together pre-reveal really did kill the whole “appeal” of the square the more I think about it. Any romantic development that could’ve happened is stopped by Adrie//nette only having eyes for the civilian identity, particularly killing the Lady//noir side.

Meanwhile Lad//rien and Mari//chat, as is, have the exact same dynamic of:

Chat/Ladybug: *knows that’s their gf/bf but can’t let them know that*

Marinette/Adrien: *clueless about them being their bf/gf*

Like what options are there going forward?

1.) Adrie//nette staying 100% loyal until the reveal, and likely ignoring any issues Lady//noir had because ehh what’s that stuff matter, they’ve been happily together for x amount of time?

2.) They breakup and they date as Lady//noir, with the eventual reveal culminating in “omg we fell for each other twice without knowing it! true loveeeee”? Which sounds way less appealing happening after a breakup (as opposed to the idea that they fell for both sides at the same time as has been done in many a fanfic), especially if the truth about Gabriel is in any way the cause of said breakup.

3.) Feelings for the hero sides of the mask didn’t go away and they cheat on each other…with each other, and then when the reveal happens it’s totally okay because they didn’t technically cheat?

@little-miss-understood It baffles me at how they continually make the worst decisions possible for the square in particular.

There’s little things that we could remove in past episodes that make it less toxic and save their respective characters a bit (e.g. you could remove Maribug sniffing Adrien’s bed in Chat Blanc - which turned out to be a last minute addition to make her look worse; or making Adrien’s absence in battles in Kuro Neko due to Gabriel’s interference instead of him sulking on the couch about feeling unneeded because Ladybug dare call in other heroes when he can’t be bothered to show up; or Adrien taking Ladybug’s initial “No” for an answer and have him stop pursuing her/trying to get a kiss from her; etc..)

But at this point, there’s no salvaging it. The flaws that could’ve been worked on were ignored (because they think Adrien is perfect and can do no wrong, while they think Marinette’s obsessive crush is just a funny personality trait - and then they say it’s born from trauma and expect us to take that seriously after treating her as a joke for 4 seasons) and those toxic behaviors are completely ingrained into the ship, and they keep making big story decisions (Chat Blanc/Ephemeral/Re-Creation) that just doom it beyond repair.

The most realistic thing they could do is let the ship inevitably implode and maybe have them end off as just friends once proper amends have been made.
