So, a lot of you know me for my lightheartedness concerning my disability, but in honor of disabled selfie night, tonight I want to tell you more of my story.

My name is Brooklyn. You probably already knew that, but if not, now you do. I’ve been disabled my entire life. I was born 2.5 months early, along with my twin brother. We both had problems. He was born deaf, and a couple of months into my life I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Thankfully for my brother, the doctors were able to perform a surgery to restore his hearing. For me though, there is no reversing brain damage.

When I was diagnosed, my parents were told that I would be completely dependent on them for the rest of my life. That I would never walk, or dress myself, or be a normal girl.  My parents refused to believe this. They forced me to walk. They forced me to learn to dress myself. They put me through physical and occupational therapy, and even eight surgeries (6 of them were done at one time when I was too little to remember them), to optimize my muscle use. 

Thanks to my parents, I proved doctors wrong. I still can’t walk by myself completely, but if you give me a cane or someone’s arm, I can do it to some extent. My dad even taught me how to take 15 steps all by myself. Unfortunately though, as I grew older I realized that I wasn’t normal, and I began to hate myself. I remember being in the second grade and not understanding why all of my friends made the gymnastics team besides me. That was the first time my mom explained to me that my wheelchair took some opportunities away from me. 

It broke my heart. I kept growing older, and things got worse. My friends started doing things without me until I didn’t have any friends at all. In the third grade I was told that I was nothing but a disease and nobody wanted to touch me or they’d get it too. In middle school I was told that boys would date me if I could walk. These things took a toll on me, and before I knew it, I was wasting every wish I ever got- birthdays, shooting stars, dandelions- on wishing away my disability. 

It wasn’t until one day when I was watching YouTube videos with my sister one day that I heard someone tell me, “If you’re lucky enough to be different, never change.” At the time, this was the most basic, cliche quote that everyone in the fandom wrote everywhere, but it has always meant so much to me because that was the last time I ever wished my disability away instead of embracing it. 

I’m all grown up now at 18, and sometimes I do still have fears that maybe nobody will ever want to marry me, or that I’ll end up all alone, but I always know in the back of my mind that I can do amazing things. Since embracing my difference, I have done incredible things. I have traveled the world, I have inspired others, I have served as an ambassador for people with disabilities like mine. I try to be the person I once needed. 

While I will always be insecure about it sometimes, I would not have had the bravery to do what I do now without the encouragement of a simple sentence from Taylor. 

So Taylor, if you’re reading this, thank you for changing my life.
