Newbie Surfer Tips: Choosing a Board

Learning to surf can be daunting, particularly since the sport entails a lot of training and practice before you could even start to touch on all those cool-looking turns or maneuvers. You should also disregard any notion that surfing is without any technical considerations, especially when beginner safety is involved. For instance, when it comes to choosing a board, here are some tips that you have to keep in mind:

Many surfing schools advocate the use of longboards for beginners. A longboard measures up to 11 feet long, but length choice should be based on your height. As a rule of thumb, your board should be at least 16 to 20 inches taller than you. It should also be more or less three inches thick.

The shape shouldn't be too much of an issue for a beginner, since this factor comes into play mostly when you're already doing some maneuvering of your own at an intermediate or advanced level. You may forget about buying an expensive board, too. While you're learning, you'll surely end up denting and scratching your board, making an inexpensive yet effective one more practical.

Foamboards are recommended for all newbie surfers. These are mostly made of foam that hurt less when you accidentally hit yourself with your board. This type of board should protect you from getting injured throughout your training.

Basic Tips for Beginner Surfers

If you want to surf well and properly, learning how to paddle your surfboard correctly is a must. Good paddlers are able to catch more waves than poor paddlers. Don't position your body too far back as it will tilt the board in the front, and will slow you down. However, if you're too far forward, then it will cause the board's nose to sink. Remember, the flatter the board is on the water, the better it will glide.

Most beginners spend time in the whitewater to learn how to stand on their board and find their perfect spot while riding it. When catching whitewater waves, be selective. Choose one that has enough power and will allow you to move for a long distance. It should be moving straight toward the beach.

To keep your surfboard flat underneath you while you're surfing, you have to fully understand how to keep your weight centered on the board. When surfing, you should stand sideways on the surfboard. When you land on your surfboard, your front foot should be somewhere near the center and your back foot about 18 inches to 2 feet from the back.

When paddling out, lift up and go over or dive down whenever it's possible. Learning how to surf is a challenge, but once you learn to catch the waves and conquer them, all you're left with is fun!

Surfing can be really fun for some people. It's a way to show their love for the waters and to express their passion for exhilarating sports. It's a thrilling experience which they'll probably not trade for a basketball, baseball or football game. However, like other sports, it takes time, practice, and patience before you can learn and perfect the art of surfing.

Going to a surf school will be of great advantage for people who want to learn surfing the right way.  Professional surfing instructors will teach and train you on the correct techniques, maneuvers and safety precautions you have to keep in mind as a beginner.

In choosing a surfboard, a long board is better for a first time surfer, while a short board is preferred by the more experienced ones. The long board will allow a first time surfer like you to move on the board, and will make it easier to balance when you finally catch your first wave.

Yes, surfing is an individual sport, but there are a lot of people who share the waves. Sun, Sea, Sand and Surf: Enjoying Costa Rica

Beautiful dawns, luscious greenery, long beaches of gold, white, beige, and even pink sand—Costa Rica's beaches are utter paradise. It isn't by chance that hotelclub.com named it as the sixth best surf spot in the world. It seems that every surfer who has traveled to the country can attest to this fact.

The reasons are simple. From hotels to a hammock between coconut palms, Costa Rica's 1,290 kilometers of coastline add to the wealth of the country. Aside from the sublime waves, surfers can enjoy the unique coral reefs, the birthing of humpback whales, the long lines of mangroves, natural sanctuaries, national parks, and the small islands of the coast for scuba and snorkeling.

Possibly the most popular area for surfing in Costa Rica is Tamarindo Beach. Perfect for beginners and experts, the waves on this half-kilometer stretch of beach can reach up to three meters high. The area is surrounded by nature, so you'll no doubt hear parakeets screeching in the background or see howler monkeys swing through the trees as you patiently wait for your next wave.

An important thing to keep in mind if you're a beginner surfer: the ocean is  powerful, and swimming in it is much different from swimming in a pool or lake. Don't enter the ocean unless you know how to swim, and be very cautious of strong currents.
