It takes two days, just long enough for Clark to begin wondering if he should schedule a few days off so he doesn’t lose his shit and pulverize the printer at work.

“Hi, Bruce,” Clark says, putting his work bag by the door and taking his shoes off. “How are you?”

Bruce grunts. He brought Indian food; Clark will accept the implied apology, for now. “Fine. You?”

“Good. Busy day at work.” Clark washes his hands before he joins Bruce at the table. Bruce will eat less than he should, but if Clark is eating, Bruce will eat something.

Clark is a few bites into his curry when he processes the actual statement being made here.

Bruce is in a t-shirt; his arms are bare from the biceps down.

I can't hammer out this whole fic tonight, but as I was driving through very remote parts of Idaho, this scene popped into my head and wouldn't leave me alone. (Contains discussion of self-harm scars and said scars being uhhh weaponized/violated, for lack of better words?)

"Some of my scars are more prominent than others, even though I was very meticulous about making sure they all matched," Bruce comments, seemingly idly, discarding his shirt.

Clark stops unbuttoning his own shirt and tries to arrange his face into a somber, loving expression that doesn't look either pitying or constipated. He's not sure how well it works.

"Ra's didn't like them, these scars that I chose for myself," Bruce says, trailing a hand across the dozen horizontal lines of scar tissue on his left flank, and he's talking to Clark in that way he talks to Clark when he's not talking to Clark at all. "Not the way you don't like them, the way they make you sad--"

"I'm not sure that's the best descriptor--"

"Clark."

Clark hates when Bruce of all people decides to get monosyllabic in response to pedantry about word choice, but he understands the man is baring his soul a little bit, here, shirtless, no less, so he shuts up.

Besides. Clark has been curious about the variation. "So why didn't Ra's like them?"

"He was of the opinion that the only marks on my body should be from him. So he decided the logical response was to make sure his claim to my scars was deeper than my own, one scar and one day at a time." Bruce toes his socks off. There are a few scars neatly laid out across the tops of his feet, long since faded into thin white lines. One of those scars is a centimeter more raised than the others.

"Ah." Clark's expression is, he fears, tilting decidedly more into rage than loving concern. "Logically."

This is an interesting question from a lovely commenter but I have to say that it absolutely sent me because 99% of the time I just write Bruce how I see him and forget that many traits of his are absolutely mental illness based

your writing is all so incredible to read. i come back and reread everything youve written every once in awhile because its just so fucking good.

i dont know how to explain what i mean but something about the way you write just makes everything feel so real and tangible. all of your characters just feel. so real. they are all so multi dimensional. its honestly fucking incredible to read!!

and the internal dialogue of all of your characters is so distinct for each of them!! and the way you can leave things unsaid and they can still be so unbelievably present in the writing is just. so great. like. and every time i reread i feel like i find more things that connect to each other !!! like!! and like. oh my godddd. the way different povs can contradict each other in specific ways that make. SO MUCH SENSE??

it just all has such a distinct feel to it and its incredible!!!! i always just want to sink my teeth into it!!

First off-- so sorry for the delayed response! Life has been very interesting this year.

If still relevant, I would say that my point of entry was Steve Orlando's Midnighter and Midnighter and Apollo runs, which has its flaws-- mostly in how it characterizes Apollo, in my opinion-- but was a very enjoyable read and doesn't require any real background knowledge.

The start of The Authority comics is also a good option. It's grittier and has a great cast of characters (Jenny Sparks my beloved). The first and second volumes are my favorite. I will give the disclaimer that as much as I love The Authority, the writing is so dedicated to being 'edgy' that it sometimes ends up being notably racist/misogynistic/etc. (many such cases, unfortunately).
