Youtaite 2017 Census Results

Hey there! Long time no see~ I’m back again with this year’s census results! Apologies for all the delays, but I’ve been rather busy this summer and I also kept the survey open for longer than last time. I hope that these results are worth the wait! Well at least I’m just in time for the 10th anniversary of Hatsune Miku! Appropriate huh?

This time around, we hit 709 responses! I know for sure that there are more youtaite these days, but I wonder if this is just a metric of my reach on social media... xD For those wondering how many active youtaite we are, I’d say that we’re at least 1000 strong, considering the general participation in CBs and the like. 

As always, any comments on the data I’ve aggregated are my own opinions, and don’t reflect the opinions of the community as a whole. Data was analyzed and charted out in excel. I also deleted around 5-6 spoof entries. Telling me you’re pizza gender or 9999 from Antarctica isn’t funny guys.

This year’s map only includes entries from this census survey, as I finally remembered to add a Canadian province section. xD Looks like we have great representation as usual! Beyond the large American and Canadian communities, there’s also a sizeable French and Indonesian community! Have a look~

Yay time for data!

What’s the Youtaite gender distribution?

Looks like a larger portion of the community is female. Honestly I was expecting for there to be more males now but I guess that’s not really the case... Interestingly enough, there’s a smaller percentage of other genders beyond female/male. That said, it could just be caused by the fact that my data set is larger.

How old are Youtaites?

Honestly, the distribution is rather similar to last year’s but it’s interesting to note that we’re seeing people get older since the age group sizes are shifting more towards maxing out at 18-19, compared to 17-18 last year.

How long have people been in the community?

General distribution essentially hasn’t changed honestly. People just moved up the rungs. Looks like less people joined the community in the past year though. 

How many CBs have Youtaites participated in?

Too many... Or actually not enough. Surprise! Most people who answered this survey have never participated in a CB.

Beyond that, I decided to see if there was a correlation between your time in the community and the number of CBs you’ve participated in, as well as the max CBs someone has participated in within each group.

Not surprisingly, the longer you’ve been in the community, the more CBs you’ve been in. Also, to the person who’s only been around for 2-3 years but has been in nearly 20 CBs, you’re a TOTAL MASO. WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO YOURSELF.

What roles do Youtaites take in the community?

Honestly, the distribution hasn’t changed that much compared to last years. Animators are still rather scarce in this community, so treat them well. :) Though, it seems that there are more and more animators cropping up and the ratio of singers to animators isn’t so bad anymore. 

Out of curiosity, I decided to see how genders spread out within each role.

Surprise! ... not really. Females super outnumber everyone throughout all of these comparisons.

I’d like to say that a larger proportion of males decide to go into mixing than females. It sorta confirms what I had a hunch about.

I don’t know if I’m supposed to be surprised for artists and animators.

For the rest of the roles, they’ve been laid out in this table. You’re more than welcome to compare this to the gender pie chart I posted earlier!

How do Youtaites interact with each other?

This is where you see the largest amount of change honestly. Last year, Skype was barely edging out on twitter as the winner, with Facebook following, but significantly less. This year, Twitter and Discord are clearly winning over Skype by large margins. I guess my evil plan to get people over to discord with the youtaite server worked I MEAN WHAT?? Honestly, I expect less and less people to use Skype now that Discord is rolling out screenshare and video calling. 

Where do Youtaites upload their covers?

Honestly, this hasn’t changed much at all. We’re youtaites after all.

Where do Youtaites upload their art/animations?

A significantly larger portion of artists/animators are now uploading their work on Twitter and Instagram now! Honestly I feel it’s due to the fact that both of the those platforms are better designed to maximize exposure. However, this has led to reposters also getting more views than the original artist. Make sure to RT the original artist’s work when you can, and to not upload work that isn’t yours! You’d think that would be self explanatory but people reposting art without credit is a rather rampant issue.

What types of songs do Youtaites sing?

Not many changes here. Vocaloid, Anisong, and Japanese music in general are still holding strong. The higher percentages you see here are partially caused by the fact that I’ve filtered out those who don’t sing from the numbers this time around.

So, exactly how much has the community changed over the years?

Honestly, not all that much. More and more people join every year, and we’ve changed where we communicate with each other. But honestly, that’s just normal growth of a community, along with the sign of an ever changing technological landscape. Whether or not this is a good thing or not is up to you.

That said, this survey doesn’t cover to how things have changed on a more societal standpoint! Maybe that’s a good topic for another survey in the future. 

Anyways, let’s have a look at how y’all design your OCs...

How many Youtaites have OCs?

Surprise! There’s actually a sizeable chunk of people without an OC. Many people simply like to talk to other people in the community and don’t directly participate.

What are the typical OC hair colors?

Brown and black win by a large margin. I’m honestly surprised. I thought people would choose the more out there colors. xD

As an extra, it seems that almost 25% of us have more than one color in our hair! I think it’s probably cause ombre and other multicolored hair dye jobs have become more popular/acceptable in culture lately.

What are the typical OC eye colors?

Most people have blue eyes! The eye colors present in real life are the most common colors. 

Interestingly enough, about 17% of us chose to have heterochromia.

Youtaite Census 2016 Results

Hello! I’ve come back from the depths of hell with another series of census results. I know that it hasn’t been quite a year since the last one, but it seemed like fun, so why not! Of course, I should have thought things through a bit more and done it at a time where people were more active... BUT... I think I've cast our a wider net this time! 

Answers came in a lot slower this time, but we still hit 572 reponses! Not only that, but most of them didn’t answer my survey from last year, so that’s awesome! Considering everything, that makes us around 1100 youtaites total. Of course, people come and go as the passing breeze, and change their names fairly often, so this is a rough estimate at best. 

Data was aggregated in a similar matter to last year’s, with me editing out troll answers if needed. I swapped over to excel though, since it’s much more powerful for sorting this amount of data. There are also some options/questions missing for those who filled it out during its first hour, affecting the results a bit. 

Again, all comments are my opinions only, and don’t reflect the opinions of the community as a whole. Also, hopefully things are better now that I'm doing things in excel and have finally started to understand tumblr

I’ve merged the information given by both year’s surveys, put them in a new updated map! Over 1000 youtaites are represented! Countries of note include Afghanistan, Cuba, and Iceland. Have look~

What’s the gender distribution like in the community?

I’m SO surprised /sarcasm. There’s also a strong LGBT presence, so yay for diversity! The other section is sorta peppered with legitimate alternate genders, and also genders such as attack helicopter and bread. I mean, who DOESN’T want to be an attack helicopter? That’s so badass.

How old are youtaites?

To those who answered that they weren’t born yet, sorry, I’ve deleted your entries from the analysis. Same to the people who gave me John Cena’s age or told me they were 69.

Most youtaites are 18 or over. I also created age groups based on approx stages of life (AKA middle/high school, uni, young adulthood, etc...) and compiled it into a pie chart. 

Most of us are either in high school or university. I sorta feel that a lot of the older youtaites are the ones who have been generally around for a very long time. We’ll revisit this idea later. 

How long have people considered themselves to be part of this community?

The distribution is fairly across the board, with most people having joined the community within the last 3 years or so. A quarter of us joined within the last 1-2 years, which correlates with the peak in Chorus Battle interest.

Keep in mind that this only includes what we vaguely label the Youtaite Community. Many people have been singing Japanese music for longer in different communities.

Is there a relationship between your age and how long you’ve been in the community?

Why yes actually! I grouped people in the age groups I created earlier, and then created distributions of their time in the community. It indicates that a good chunk of the older youtaites are also veterans in the community.Also, keep in mind that there is only one person who answered this survey who is over 30. 

What roles do we do as Youtaites?

Honestly speaking, the relative distribution hasn’t changed much at all since the last census survey. Staff are still hugely outnumbered by singers. Keep the low percentages in mind, especially for animators, when asking for support members! The ‘Other’ role mostly include really miscellaneous or troll roles, but include rappers and vocaloid users.

What do we use to communicate with each other?

As last year, most people use Skype and Twitter to talk to each other, and using texting apps on the go. A new addition is Discord, which came out recently and has a huge following for the time it’s been around. 

Where do we upload our covers/audio works?

Most people are on YT and Soundcloud. The ‘Other’ entries include box.com/Mediafire (which honestly don’t count since those are file hosts). My bad for not being clearer.

What types of songs do we sing?

Clearly, we mostly sing Vocaloid and Anisong... and just Japanese music in general. Half of us sing Translyrics of some type, and I guess with the popularity of Love Live, J-idol music has become more of a thing.

Where do we upload our art/animation?

An equal amount of people upload on YT and DA. It’s partially since this question includes animators, and also since many artists upload their process videos on YouTube as well. Other contenders include FB, Tumblr, and Twitter. I ended up revising the list when I realized how many sites I missed while browsing through the responses filed under ‘other’.

Youtaite Surveys - Chorus Battles

Haro~ I’m back for another results post. The goal of this survey was really to promote discussion about a somewhat controversial but core part of our community: Chorus Battles. 

While I’ve only been active in this community for the past couple years, please understand I’ve been a crazy lurker since way before YTC days. I remember the first CBs. 

I’ll be mostly tabulating others opinions, but please understand that I’ll be putting in my opinions in also. You’re welcome to agree or disagree with whatever I say. I’m totally open to different interpretations of the data! Either comment here or on twitter. 

Quick stats: 198 Total Reponses, of which 1-2 of them I consider to be fake data or joke data, which have been removed.  11 Respondents have never participated in a CB.

Also yes I know this is long. Please please pleeeaasse read it through completely though. Like ... all the user opinions are at the end sooo.

How many CBs have youtaites been in?

On average youtaites have participated in 5 CBs.  I’m taking this number with a grain salt since results from 1-20 (you crazy masos) CBs. Worst thing is that I actually know at least one of the people who have done 20 CBs and he hasn’t been in community that long. 

Based on the histogram, most people have participated around 3 CBs really. Reasonable. 

Why don’t we break this down by the amount of years youtaites have been in the community. 

Distribution of youtaites this time wasn’t as even as I wanted it to be. Can this be an indication that CBs just aren’t as popular? I really doubt it. It’s probably just a bias of distribution based on the people who follow me and know me in the community, as well as the people who are willing to answer this long survey.

There’s a pretty obvious upward trend in the amount of CBs people participate in based on the amount of time they’ve been in the community. Pretty much means that people participate in a certain amount of CBs every year. Though, based on the ranges of amount of CBs compared to the amount of years in the community, there’s a trend of newer youtaites participating in more CBs per year. It’s not a huuggggee amount though. Like 2 per year? That’s doable. 

This is probably directly linked to the amount of CBs per year. 2-4 years ago it used to be max 2-4 CBs a year, while these days we can have around easily 10+ CBs a year. (These a just approx tabulations based on my memory so bear with me). 

Social interactions and Chorus Battles

Why do Youtaites join CB anyways?

Most people primarily join CBs to have fun with friends. Otherwise it’s for the challenger and to get to know other people. After all of that it’s to become well known in the community (probably by going far in the CB). 

Do Youtaites consider the judging panel’s qualifications before joining?

Yup. A large majority do. Honestly, I feel that having a good judging panel is directly related to whether or not a chorus battle will succeed. 

Who do Youtaites participate in CBs with?

How do they join a CB group? 

Yeaaaah I’m not surprised that people usually get asked to join. However, I’ve noticed a trend of people getting pressured into a group. If you don’t have time, please don’t join the group. If someone tells you they are busy, please understand that... they’re busy. :\ No one wants to have a CB become a total chore. 

How many youtaites have experienced significant drama at least once in a CB group?

Not as bad as I thought. 

What roles do youtaites do in a CB group?

 If you looked at the last survey results this shouldn’t be a surprise.

Note how many more singers there are than support people. Yes. 

Do Youtaite consider themselves maso? 

I cry. 2/3 of us are maso. 1/3 of us are in denial 

Average time spent for each role. 

Assume 5-7 person chorus. However, I’m pretttttyy sure that people misunderstood the time measurement. Heads up, I meant continuous work in the role. Some people took more than 73 hours, but that was the max time. Answers here were optional so I put in the total number of answers given to me.

Singers

 Total number of answers: 170. Median singing time: 4 hours. 

Mixers

Total number of answers: 102. Median mixing time: 12 hours.

Animators

Total number of answers: 77. Median animating time: 32.5 hours.

Artists

Total number of answers: 72. Median drawing time: 20 hours.

Instrumentalist/Composer

Relatively rare role but still. Someone needs to explain to me how 0 hours is a good answer. 

Total number of answers: 9. Median composing time: 7 hours.

Translyricist

Again with the pointless 0 hours. See this is what I meant about annoying noise data. 

Total number of answers: 21. Median translyric writing time: 4 hours.

Notice how much more time the major support staff roles take than singing. Appreciate your support staffs. Understand how much extra work it can be if there are outlandish requests. Everyone... should really appreciate each other since we’re all putting in a significant amount work in an entry!

CB Results

What’s the furthest round youtaites have reached?

There has yet to have a CB to have reached R5 so trollolool. Overall though, majority of people get to R3 mostly since a good chunk of CBs are 3 rounds long. See, this might be a bias because of the people I know. Most them have gotten to final round. ;; Though this really shows that not everyone is stuck at R1 forever. 

How many youtaites have been top 2 spots in a CB?

More people than I realized but .. MIGHT BE THE PEOPLE I KNOW AGAIN. Also, I didn’t ask if you’ve WON a CB to appease some CB gods. :3 ... 

How many youtaites have dropped out of a CB more than once?

Maybe I should have asked the amount of times but meh. 

I applaud the 67 individuals who managed to follow through with their group. 

How many CBs have never been completed?

Honestly I was looked for the max number to get a certain grip on how many CBs fail before finishing. Looks like at least 8 CBs have never been completed. A little half of the respondents were effected by at least 1 CB failing to complete. Majority of them had 1-2 CBs never completed. It’s not a super common issue but it’s starting to ring alarm bells on how CBs are organized. 

Opinions on CBs

Time for the walls of text. No more pictures since the one that’s left doesn’t say much. I’m just going to summarize some good points that were mentioned. 

Are there too many CBs?

82.3% answered yes. That’s an overwhelming majority. 

Why? (yes)

Sumashu wrote a post on this very topic, where he covers why this many CBs is an issue here. 

-Many CBs that crop up are bad quality, be it planning or judging. -More CBs, means less exposure/recognition -Too many CBs means that they’re not as special anymore or feel repetitive/boring.  -The quality is suffering badly.  -Staff are getting stretched thin. They’re getting overworked and are disrespected. mochi note: Honestly, part of the issue here is people who don’t gauge how much time they have and also get pressured by other people. I feel that there needs to be more a discussion before a staff members joins. Will they have time? If they don’t, don’t push the issue. PLEASE DON’T BEG FOR THEM TO JOIN. Honestly the guilt tactics thrown at me sometimes...  Why not? (no)

-Why is it an issue if you can choose what CB you want to join? -No one needs to worry about not being able to join a CB. Miss a deadline? There’s another one coming.  -CBs are fun! Do you feel that CBs are well organized?

64% answered no. Not a huge majority, but still... if it’s a split like this it’s sorta sad you know? 

Why not? (no)

-Lack of reliable and experienced judges Someone said a good note: “If they’re struggling with getting schoolwork done on time, how can we trust them to run a CB?” -Bad time management and consistency -Qualified Judges. Too many of them are just hopping onto the bandwagon without much to their name. 

Do you still intend to join CBs? 

76.9% say yes. We’re all masos despite everything. RIP all of us I’m burning incense and praying for the sanity of the community. 

What makes a CB worth joining? 

-Interesting/original/out of the box concepts -Challenge -Good prizes -Being organized/punctual -Qualified Judges who don’t start up drama and are polite. -Unbiased Judges. mochi note: I’m just going to tell you guys that this isn’t ever happening. It’s legit IMPOSSIBLE for a human being to not be at least slightly biased. You’re looking for a robot. HOWEVER, it’s totally possible to have a judging team that tries minimizes bias by choosing judges with different preferences.  Anyways, I think that’s it! Thank you for going through this huge writeup! (owo)b I hope that this results page gives you a snapshot on the current status of the community in regards to CBs and to the future of CBs. Some important takeaways:  -Support staff are doing a LOT of work. Appreciate it since they’re still doing it for free at the end.  -Responsibility is very important for both the organization and participation of a CB.  Please please please talk about the results. The nature of chorus battles, or CBs has changed drastically lately, with several CBs typically running at the same time. The youtaite survey was so cool! Maybe you should have an option for their nationality and mother language next time, but overall a great thing to know about how our community is diverse.

Hmm. I feel that I covered the nationality issue by asking them for the country they live in for the most part! As for mother language, that’s an interesting suggestion. I don’t know when I could put that in, but maybe if I do this census again next year!

Youtaite Census Survey 2015 Results

Hello~ Mochi here! First things first, thank you so much for your support and your quick answers! I thought this was going to take me at least a week, and I got over 400 responses within the first day. At the end, I got a total of 541 youtaites to answer my survey. While this isn’t the entirety of the community, this just shows how large it actually is. I can vaguely estimate that we’re at least around 800-1000 active youtaites. 

Anyways, let’s go to breakdown of the data. Most of the time I’ll just aggregate the data into a chart. I have some ideas of why some trends are the way they are, so I’ll add some comments to maybe spark some type of discussion. Any questions? You can either ask them here on tumblr or via my twitter.

Like this idea? There are still plenty of questions left to ask the community. If there’s an interest, I can keep on making these little surveys. Like... I’m thinking about a CB focused one... 

How old are youtaites?

Surprise surprise. The majority of youtaites are either in high school or starting up/in the middle of their undergraduate university studies. The great news is that we don’t have any known jailbaits under the age of 12. Sry Pedobear??

Where do youtaites live? First off, I apologize to Canada for not putting in provinces. I didn’t really think about it and didn’t want to crowd the survey any more than I had to. Anyways, all the results are mapped on a custom google map! Have a look around!

Top country for youtitties by a huge majority is the US (160). Not really surprising, considering how the major major demographic of YT is America. Next up is France (76), Canada (42), and Indonesia (42). Some cool countries include Lithuania (hi Vivi), Georgia (the country), Qatar,  Suriname, Brunei, and Croatia. We really are a world class community! 

State wise, I’m not really surprised that the vast majority of Youtaites are Californian. Manga and Anime culture started up there waaaaayyyy early. 

Surprisingly, there are 5 Japanese youtaites. I expected them all to be on NND, but guess not. 

As for an explanation for the lack of presence of some countries that do have huge Japanese covering communities, don’t forget that they don’t based their activities on YT! Russia has VK, Korea as Ate.li/Daum/Naver, and China has Bilibili/5sing.

Time for some community specific stats?

How long have people been in the Youtaite community?

This was an honestly surprised for me. I thought that there would be more newbies and more people around the 3-4 years / 5+ years mark. It’s a mostly even distribution. The 2-3 year mark has a very slight spike probably due to the fact that Miku really hit the mainstream (like we’re talking car commercials) around 2012/2013. As for the spike of newbies, I’ll chalk it to the CB craze. 

What roles do Youtaites do in the community? 

Not reaaally surprising that the vast majority (97% of respondents) are singers. About 40% were mixers, so there are about 2 singers for every mixers. However, there’s only 1 animator for every 4 singers and 1 artist for every 3 singers. Keep that in mind next time you go ask a support staff to help you with a chorus. 

How do Youtaites interact with each other?

This is pretty self explanatory. In the other, people put in Line, texting, etc... I really intended this to be more of a where do you communicate with people publicly.

Where do Youtaites upload their covers? 

Most people do YT or SC. Other platforms include Box. Yeah, you have a point. I hope this doesn’t surprise you, since we’re... Youtaites. youtube. Youtaites. Yes. 

Software and Hardware time gaiz. 

What microphones do Youtaites use? 

Honestly the list is very long, so you can go look at the raw data and see it for yourself. The vast majority of youtaites use the Blue Yeti. Other common microphones include the AT2020, Blue snowball, and the Samson C01u. Russians for some reason really like the CAD U37 (I’d really like an explanation for this). All of these are USB microphones. 

As for XLR microphones, it really varies a ton. Beyond that, many youtaites use their iPod/iPad/Android. The most popular brands are Blue Microphones and Samson.

Which DAWs (Digital Audio Workstation) do mixers use?

Clearly we all just use whisks to mix. 

It makes sense that Audacity is the most popular since it’s the only one that’s actually free compared to the other ones. Audition isn’t really meant to be a true DAW, but it’s quite accessible as being part of the Adobe suite. Beyond that, it was one of the first DAWs people picked up after Audacity in the JP covering community as a whole since it’s one of the DAWs that is the easiest to mix on as a beginner with no understanding of the concepts. Less people than I realize use Melodyne. Also, considering how difficult it is to use, I’m surprised that there’s a good amount of people using ProTools. 

Other DAWs include Sony Vegas (... I have many things to say about this but I won’t), Soundbooth (umm... that got replaced by Audition please upgrade), and mixpad.

What software do artists use?

If you guys are surprised I don’t know what to say. Clip Studio Paint usage def became a thing with that crazy sale they had a couple months ago. Other software mentioned include FireAlpaca, Ibis Paint, and Krita. Also, kind reminder that this was made using Microsoft Paint. Don’t discount it. 

What software do animators use?

Honestly, the most powerful for the learning curve you have to go through is definitely After Effects. Plus it’s one of the most integrative ones with the most plugins really. I’m not surprised at this distribution. Other software include iMovie and Camtasia.

Hi. Honestly speaking, I don’t really plan to be active on tumblr at all.
