nate deserves better human friends man

humans in yokai watch are genuinely such assholes in what world do people think it's okay to call a person average to their face and not think "hey maybe it may hurt nate's feelings to call him average because that could easily be saying he's insignificant and replacable"

i get it's a gag but like dude

the worst part is this ain't even coming from inspiriting these people are just naturally like that to him

imagine being 11 years old and practically everyone around you calls you insignificant and replaceable

and ONLY you

these people treat him like he's beginning of the movie emmet from the lego movie

like dude nate has tons of personality

he's clear about his likes and dislikes, not just some yes man

and like i've said this in character before but like

what the hell makes these bland people not "average" compared to nate

if Nate is the only "Average" one then that's not??? Average????

moral of the story, anime katie sucks, game katie better, if the anime ever comes back from the hole it was thrown down, nate should hang out with hailey more

I'm so glad to finally see people talking about it, cuz this is legit one of the reason I lowk hate the anime so much. The way it handled its character and the over repetitive gags (well, one goes with the other anyways).

Everyone, including Keita (Nate) friendgroup, calls him average. First, I don't see what's wrong with being average?? And also, legit everyone in his class is average (Mao/Lucas aside but that's a whole different topic).

Like, it's literally canon that anime Keita has insecurities and self esteem issues because of always getting average (if anyone is curious, I made a post about it.)

Anyways, back to the characters, why are Kanchi (Eddie), Kuma (Bear) and also Fumi (Katie) lowk so mean to him in the anime sometime?? You don't need ennemies when you have friends like that ong. Mostly with Fumi always calling him "average". Like are they even truly childhood friends atp?

In the game, they are way better and nicer. Sure, Kanchi and Kuma tease him sometime (like at the beginning of yokai watch 1, where fumi defends him btw), but you really see that they're close friends and really likes eachothers, since they're pretty much childhood friends. Like, are we just gonna forget about the chapter with SV Snaggerjag, the museum chapter, the summer festival chapters and etc?

I don't understand why the anime fumbled the characters SO badly. They deserve better than that, Keita especially (with how bad he gets treated sometime), and mostly, their friendship and friendgroup deserves way better.

(Just a side note from me, but in the anime, you can legit ask you "how the hell did keita and fumi ended up canon?" with how they interacted in the anime, whereas in the game, they really have a cute bond.)

And I didn't even mention Keita, whisper and jibanyan friendship! I HATE the anime for how they did it, like, why is Keita so mean to Whisper in some ep?? They are literally THE found family ever in the game, and especially in the manga (I'll talk about it more later).

And the gag of whisper being dumb... We're tired. Yes, Keita tease whisper in the game, but that's all, he isnt particulary mean (not to mention hes 11 so he doesnt always get that he can hurt people with what he says) and its not like... every ep. They genuinely have a very cute bond in the game, jibanyan included.

As for the manga, it didn't do Keita friendgroup that better (But still better than the anime anyways, like in chapter 149) but the way it did Keita, whisper and jibanyan bond... It's just SO good. It has the perfect balance of sweet moments and gags and teasing. The whole chapters about Whisper's backstory and the whole volume 13 (Ghoulfather chapters) are the perfect example of this (and I'm not even mentionning shadowside manga.) Really, thanks you Konishi-sensei for this. (I should do a rant about the manga one day now that I think about it...)

I hate the anime gags so much, like it can be funny sometime, but it just becomes too much.

A friend and I have pondered this question before and we kinda landed on the conclusion of "the anime was trying really hard to be Doraemon."

Like, think about the core four human characters in each.

-your average Japanese preteen boy

-the big dumb one everyone refers to by a nickname.

-intelligent rich kid who's always showing off a shiny new toy.

-pretty popular girl who hangs our with them and is considered

Same four core archetypes, right? Major difference is: in the games Nate's friend group aren't jerks to eachother.

Bear's a dunce, but means well and can be sweet at times. Eddie might use his connections a lot, but most of the time it comes up is when he's buying shit for his friends like those mega watches. And Nate? That kid has the patience of a goddamn *saint*. He's the kid no one can hate cause he's too damn nice and helpful

Which is why it doesnt work when the anime tries to replicate the doraemon formula, a formula built on the repetition of Nobi doing something stupid against all warnings and suffering for it.

They got the suffering part right, but 90% of thr time is because of actions outside of Nate's control, and he was only involved because he was trying to help. But the universe still punishes him because hes the protagonist and "comedy".

It makes later episodes of the anime borderline unwatchable. -_-

Also, kinda off topic, but the dynamic of Nate, Hailey and Buck is way more fun imo because they've got distinct characters of their own, and are actually allowed to be in on the yokai shenanigans.
