When a girl child from a rural area or a far-flung region is provided the opportunity of free schooling, she becomes educated, and feels empowered to think on her own. This small step can be taken at your own level -- do you have a domestic help whose daughter doesn't go to school? Teach her about the rights of a child. Tell her that every child needs access to basic education, nutritious food and shelter. Do what you can to get the girl join the school system. Of course, there are civil society groups and the government also doing everything possible to get as many girls into schools as possible. Provide a child nutritious meals Another step to take is to ensure that a child gets nutritious meals in school. Whether it is the government or an NGO, this is important. A well-fed and healthy child tends to stay on in school and not add to dropout numbers. Also, one healthy meal lowers the burden on parents who may not be in a position to provide the same.

The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education or RTE Act ensures free education in India for all children in the 6-14 age group. Free education is of course for children who are in government schools. This is a shot in the arm for underprivileged child education. Child education in India is a key responsibility of not just the government but also civil society and NGOs. Every member of society should join hands to ensure that each child learns and becomes a contributing member of society.

Role of Civil Society and Organisations

While there are government schools in every nook and corner of our states, NGOs and corporates also need to join hands in various ways. An NGO could help in the implementation of certain projects in far-flung villages, help in volunteering, providing text books and other learning materials. Corporates could also help by adopting some schools.

The CRY volunteer intervention area in Dwarka, Delhi held its first Medical Camp with the help of volunteers from Asian Medical Students Association (AMSA India).  The camp  resulted in a full check-up of 81 children as well as spreading awareness about diseases. Effect of Malnutrition on Child Development

Malnutrition is a serious health condition that develops due to lack of adequate nutrients and proteins that essential for the proper physical and mental development of the body. And since the most important developmental stages occur during childhood, child malnutrition can leave permanent and often irreversible damage in the physical and mental health of the child.

Worryingly, child malnutrition is a common malady in most developing countries, a list which includes India. And the statistics for this easily preventable condition is shocking. A study by the World Bank reveals that India has one of the world’s highest numbers of children suffering from malnutrition and its accompanying side-effects. The data ranks India at 67th position out of 80, which puts us close to North Korea and even Sudan!

Consequences of Child Malnutrition

Nutrition is essential at all stages of life. But it is extremely important during the formative years of childhood, crucially the first two years of the child’s life. The effects of malnutrition beyond this age are irreversible and result in permanent damages like stunting, mental disorders, a weak immune system and learning disabilities. In girls, childhood malnutrition also impairs the reproductive organs and therefore, mothers who suffered from malnutrition tend to give birth to impaired or weak babies. This becomes a cycle that affects generations of a family and therefore can have far-reaching consequences.

Gender Inequality in India

Over the past few years, there has been tremendous progress in terms of ensuring equal rights for women in the world. But there are a few countries that still lag behind and India is one of them. Gender discrimination and stereotyping is still prevalent in many backward regions of the country and the discrimination begins as soon as a girl child is born.This discrimination has been the cause for the continuing horrifying practice of female infanticide and foeticide. Girls are still looked down upon by families, as liabilities.While the 2011 census reveals that numbers of such cases are gradually falling, it still not fast enough. The prospects continue to remain bleak for millions of young girls. More than 4.5 lakh girls in India are married by the age of 15 years and have one or more children. There are continued reports almost everyday, of violence and abuse of women in many parts of the country. Women are still not safe on the roads, and even in their own homes, from abuse and violence.While many NGOs and governmental organisations are striving to look into every issue faced by women, there are many gaps yet to be filled.Here are a few crucial issues that must be addressed if we hope to look forward to a society where women and men are given equal opportunities

Tackling Child labour in India

According to Census data, there are over 82 lakh child labourers, aged between 5 and 14 years of age, in India. Out of which more than a million children work in hazardous occupations. Let that statistic sink in for a second. In our latest blitzkrieg of economic development, we've seemingly neglected important issues. While urbanization has been our chief focus, with prosperity levels rising, there is a stark contrast if you turn your attention towards child labour in India. Most of India's children are employed in rural and semi-rural areas. Most of these children do not attend school or receive any kind of formal education. For most of these children, a typical day begins at a brick kiln, a bidi factory or at a roadside eatery. When it comes to tackling the menace of child labour, the approach needs to be multi-pronged much like the problem itself. It is due to various causes that children find themselves engaged in labour. The inability of the family to provide the child with a suitable education, coupled with the need to have an extra helping hand in the field sends them into labour. Another way children find themselves employed is through child-trafficking. These children find themselves doing work that most adults would find strenuous. How Can You Help Prevent Child Exploitation

Every child deserves to make memories in their childhood that they can cherish later. Childhood is the most formative period in a child’s life and often shapes who the child will go on to become as an adult. A childhood marred with abuse, neglect and exploitation only leads to the child growing up with a disturbed and depressed outlook towards life.

Children are the most important section of the population of every country. 39% of India's population consists of children and of them, 29% are between the age of 0-5 years. Being home to the largest number of children in the world (United Nations), India has many child welfare schemes to take care of its precious next generation. Over the years, the allocation of funds to social sector programmes have gradually increased. Unfortunately, a major chunk of the population remains unaware of these beneficial programmes. And these are people who really require the kind of assistance provided by government welfare schemes. And yet, there are millions of poor and underprivileged children in India without access to even the most basic of amenities. This is due to a number of issues and challenges faced by NGOs in India. These issues often hinder the various projects undertaken by these NGOs.

Here are a few issues and challenges faced by NGOs in India:

1. Lack of funding

NGOs find getting sufficient and continuous funding for their work the most challenging task. The idea of online donations and easy cash transfers through apps like Paytm and others is still not popular in India. And people do not take the trouble to visit offices and directly donate either. 
NGOs rely on meagre donations they get and government support. For many NGOs the government backing is not good enough, and thus they cannot function smoothly. LET’S TACKLE THE MALNUTRITION ISSUE FACED BY CHILDREN IN INDIA

Though it has been decades since India has gained Independence, the children are yet to celebrate their freedom from serious health issues like child malnutrition and high child mortality rates. While there has been economic progress, this progress seems to not have touched the lives of thousands of underprivileged children in India who still fight the same battles as their generations before have done.

Child malnutrition is a concern that the children of India are grappling with over years. The main cause for it is the high infant mortality rate.

On the occasion of World Health Day, celebrated every year on April 7th, we at CRY seek to make a difference in the lives of thousands of children across India who lack access to nutritious food.

In an earlier blog, we talked about the debilitating effects of malnutrition on children which includes permanent disabilities and a weak immune system. The importance of the right kind of nutrition at a young age cannot be stressed upon enough. Sadly, people in backward regions of the country remain unaware of this, leading to the shocking fact that 1 in every 2 children in India are malnourished. Diseases like malaria, diarrhea etc claim the lives of these young children because their bodies lack the essential nutrients and the strength to fight them. And it doesn’t help that they do not have access to good health care services either.

We tend to think of charity as the little change we spare for beggars on the street or the old clothes we give away to children staying in orphanages. Making underprivileged children feel that someone is looking out for them and cares about their welfare could make a big difference in their life. Time spent with these kids will give you an understanding of the conditions they go through. When you look back on a well-spent evening teaching children in a unprivileged locality or village, you will realise that you have made memories that will last a lifetime. You could celebrate a festival or a birthday in a special way by spending it with kids at a orphanage. Your words and actions could not only change lives but also go on to inspire people around you to take the same interest in contributing towards the welfare of the children and the society.
