Favorite Med + CS inventions!
Hey everyone! Today let's talk about the innovations in computer science and the medical field!
I want to know what your favorite innovations in these fields are!!!
I'll go first!
Smart Watches ⌚ - Technology for health-related issues like monitoring heart rate, steps, fall detection, etc. This can help elderly people get help quicker if they fall or have a heart attack.
2. Telemedicine 💻 - This was extremely helpful when COVID-19 was at a high rate. This protected vulnerable patients who couldn't go to doctor's offices/ vulnerable doctors who had family members who were elderly, young, had health issues, etc.
Now it's your turn! Tell me your favorite innovations in the computer science and medical field! Please like, and reblog! Please comment down below and tell me why it's important! 👇

AI in Medicine
AI is very important to our future. It will help us with diagnosing, software, testing, etc. This study below shows the importance of AI in medicine!
Causability and explainability of artificial intelligence in medicine - Holzinger - 2019 - WIREs Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery - Wiley Online Library Holzinger, A., Langs, G., Denk, H., Zatloukal, K., & Müller, H. (2019). Causability and explainability of artificial intelligence in medicine. Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, 9(4), e1312. https://doi.org/10.1002/widm.1312
Basically, AI tries to understand the world and concepts rather than memorize or remember facts. AI tries to explain by two ways, post hoc which explain something after it happens and ante hoc which is Ai explaining from the start like a decision to solve a problem in a certain way by reasoning first. Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are able to recognize pictures, play games, recognize speech etc. Specific parts of DNNs are CNNs (Convolutional Neural Networks) are good at identifying photos so they are basically the DNNs "eyes". and RNNs (Recurrent Neural Networks) has a memory that helps with learning and understanding new things by memorizing previous things like knowing algebra to understand pre-calculus. Its having context before doing something that needs that context and other new information to complete a task. For instance, using homework from the day before to help you with today's homework with problems. Post hoc examples area biopsy of a organ and Ante hoc example is describing (in an experiment), numerical data like size of tissues, or qualitative like if they have cancer based on how they look.
Why is this important? This is important because this can help detect cancer early in people and decrease the morality rate of cancer. Most importantly, this can help with diagnosing people in risk groups like children. This improves children's lives and helps them live a longer life so they can grow up and contribute to society in a good way. They get a chance to live a life they want and do anything.
How do you get into or interested in the Medical Field?
Start in High School (or Middle School): In Middle School, you can join/make clubs like Future Health Professionals (formerly known as Health Occupations Students Of America ) or start the club. You can join/make clubs like a Biology club, Medical Awareness Club, Anatomy Club, Science Club, Red Cross, etc. You can also do extracurriculars to get interested in the medical field like volunteering at hospitals, internships at hospitals, joining summer programs at hospitals, and getting first aid/CPR certification. Lastly, you can take classes in high school like biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, AP psychology, and (if CollegeBoard makes the class) AP anatomy and physiology.
2. Research the medical field: It is very understandable if you cannot join clubs after school. There can be various reasons why you cannot participate like if you have a job, your parents cannot pick you up, you don't know anybody in the club, or the people in the club aren't nice. Instead, you can conduct your own research on the medical field jobs that are available. Research what you must do, the education you need, salary, etc. With AI rising, research of these jobs is important since they can grow or shrink based on how advanced AI is getting (especially in the computer science field). However, in the medical field context, AI can help medical professionals with diagnosing, analyzing X-rays, analyzing test results, and more. Nowadays there are doctors online, so AI can help provide information, vitals, symptoms, etc.
3. Skills and Qualities: In the medical field (depending on the job you desire) you will be working with each other as a team. For instance, if you are working in the emergency room, you will need to work with nurses to put medicine in the IV and other doctors if you need help with a case or diagnosing an illness/condition. You will need kindness and empathy because there will be patients who are in pain and suffering. Some may not have enough money to pay or are homeless.
4. Diversity in Jobs: There are numerous jobs you can pick. From doctors to nurse practitioners to biomedical engineering to being part of the lab, testing viruses. For instance in biomedical engineering, you are not only doing things in the medical field but in the biology field, computer science field, and more. Some jobs like being a doctor take a longer time than being a nurse. It will definitely be hard to be in school for a long time, but think about the reward which is helping people have a better quality of life and live better. You can also get a big salary (around 90-120,000 dollars). But there are challenges (depending on the job you pick) like seeing your patients suffer and not be alive, working 12-hour shifts, working almost every day, and working in a busy environment.
5. Challenges: There will be challenges from Medical School to the workplace. For instance, many students stay up late studying, have a side job or internship, or are trying to get a good grade in their class/MCAT. The best way to try to avoid it or lessen it is by time managing. By using a calendar, block off your free time and busy time. For instance, 1pm Friday is lunch, and 4pm Saturday is your internship. There will also be Financial issues as well. You will need to get a scholarship and if you cannot that's okay. Try to see if you qualify for financial aid using FAFSA or try getting a grant. If you do take a loan, there are also loan forgiveness programs as well. In the time you are in your workplace as a doctor/medical professional, there are ethical concerns involving patients. For instance, a patient's medical privacy and not talking about it with anyone unless that medical professional is working with you, or a patient wanting you to not resuscitate them If you resuscitate them, they could be angry, hurt, sad, and sue you.

How to get into Coding!
Coding is very important now and in the future. Technology relies on coding and in the future you will need to know how to code to get a high-paying job. Many people consider having Computer Science field-related jobs, especially in AI. What if you are interested it in general or as a hobby? What if you don't know what you want to do yet for college?
Pick a language you want to learn: Personally, I started out with HTML and CSS. I recommend if you want to do web design HTML and CSS are good languages to start with. Otherwise, start with JavaScript or Python.
2. Find Resources: Basically you want to look at videos on YouTube, and take classes that have coding like AP CSP, AP CS A (harder class), Digital Information Technology, etc. You can also attend classes outside in the summer like CodeNinjas and use websites like code.org, freeCodeCamp, and Codecademy. Also, ask your friends for help too! You can find communities on Reddit and Discord as well.
3. Start Practicing: Practice slowly by doing small projects like making games for websites and apps. You can work with friends if you are still a beginner or need help. There's also open-source coding you can do!
4. Continue coding: If you don't continue, you will lose your skills. Be sure to always look up news on coding and different coding languages.
5. Certifications: If you are advanced in coding or want to learn more about technology, you can do certifications. This can cost a lot of money depending on what certification you are doing. Some school districts pay for your certification test. But if you take the test and pass, you can put it on your resume, and job recruiters/interviewers will be impressed! This can help with college applications and show initiative if you want a computer science degree. This shows you are a "master" of the language.

C. Doukas and I. Maglogiannis, "Region of Interest Coding Techniques for Medical Image Compression," in IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine, vol. 26, no. 5, pp. 29-35, Sept.-Oct. 2007, doi: 10.1109/EMB.2007.901793. keywords: {Image coding;Biomedical imaging;Medical diagnostic imaging;Wavelet domain; Two dimensional displays;Prototypes;Video sequences;Image quality;Telemedicine;Filters},
Totally check out this research if you want to be a radio technician!
Summary: ROI coding is a technique for different parts of an image to be compressed to different qualities. Higher quality helps with diagnosing people. For instance, for broken bones, scoliosis, etc. Nowadays there are virtual doctors, so it can make their diagnosis even more accurate than before. Wavelet transform, a mathematical transformation able to identify which part of the image is the background and the part important for diagnosing people, is added as well.
