"I...I don't know about this," I said, feeling dizzy, leaning against the dresser for support.
"What's there not to know about?" my best friend asked, obviously pleased with her efforts at dressing me.
"I...I feel so...vulnerable," I blurted out.
She smiled. "That's how all girls feel when they're dressed like this," she said, "it's how we send signals to guys, they're suckers for it."
I looked at the dress, how it hugged my thin body, at my pantyhose covered legs. The trouble was I thought I looked so pretty and was worried about how guys at the dance would see me. "What if...what if a guy wants to...you know...dance?"
She laughed. "Sweetie, half the guys there are going to want to dance with you. The trick is you only flirt with the guys you think are cute."
"I know, I know, you don't think guys are cute," she said, in a mocking tone like she didn't believe it now any more than the other thousand times I told her that. "Listen, will you just keep an open mind? Like any guy that talks to you, look for the one thing about him that's attractive. I'm not saying you have to do anything, but just do like we practiced."
It had been her goal since she found out I sometimes wore lingerie to do this, to get me to go to her sorority's spring formal as a girl. She'd spent so much time over the last few months making me point out attractive guys that it started to become second nature to me, to the point when we were out, I found myself looking at guys, not women.
"Who's that hot guy you were talking to after class on Thursday?"
"Yea," she said, smiling at how easily I answered that question. "He'll be there. I told you he said you were cute, right?"
"He did," she said, "he even asked if you were going to be at the dance. I said you were, I think he's going to look for you."
"Jenna, he...he's the one that's always touching me," I said.
"I know," she said, "listen, if you don't want to get hit on by a bunch of guys, just start talking to him as soon as you see him. Trust me, if you flirt with him, he'll be by your side all night and I'm sure take you home."
She smiled. "Someone might get lucky tonight."
