From the moment of his arrest, even left-of-center media has been presuming his guilt without examining anything (e.g. calling him "the killer" instead of "alleged" or "accused") and then when I say he didn't do it, the nearest person chimes in with some quip that tells me they think he did do it but should go free anyway. Don't get me wrong, I would have the same attitude if he had done it. But he didn't. It makes me feel like the only sane person in the world, even among my staunchly leftist friends.

As modern netizens, we live in an attention economy that has long since proven that its political power is limited. Attention drives trends, opinions, and culture but not political or militant organizing, elite power structures etc. This is why the Epstein files can be released without threatening the powerful. What the fuck is a poor person with a cell phone gonna do to a billionaire on a jet?

In the last ten years, Americans have reacted to Trumps first election, war in Ukraine, genocide in Gaza, covid, trumps second election, the epstein files, ice. How many of these were prevented as a result of the reactions? For that matter, do you really think people who "didn't know" in Nazi Germany would have liberated the camps, ever?

This is a twofold reality. First, you can't react to everything, and trying will just make you tired and unfocused. Second, extreme abuses of power typically take place under circumstances when that power can't be easily contested.

To get rid of elite human trafficking or a blank check government paramilitary organization, you're going to need more than people's reactions. You need the police, the national guard, and ICE to agree to help you or at least stay out of your way. You need a cultural consensus that we're ready to pay the cost of upending law and order. In other words, you need social animals that long for security to become comfortable with change really really fast.

Everything in the world can't be changed by wishing it were so. Change will happen at the speed that is possible, not the speed that is best for everyone.
