ONE LAST RANT ABT ME AND MY SPIRIT HUNTING EXPERIENCE

I remember being 10 years old, gathering with the homies, packing tea and ice cream in a bag, equipping bug box and bug net and going spirit hunting in the wild. And most important part NO ADULTS WERE ALLOWED

We had two goals, first one was to catch the golden Hercules beetle (doesn’t exist in Japan, we got it from a doraemon movie) and second one was to find secret dimensions. We’d occasionally have side goals like finding the portal to the realm of the dead. I remember literally crawling into random people’s garden MILITARY MODE while looking for weak spots in reality.

There’s a thing abt houses in Japan where most spaces between houses are so narrow but also so interconnected they could function like a whole forbidden path system through the entire neighborhood so we’d use them to crawl around. I VIVIDLY REMEMBER falling into a construction site because of allat and the construction workers carrying us on their shoulders so we could reach that tiny spot of forest on top of that one wall.

(Bad example of said tiny space between houses. This one actually has a tiny stream of water, u can’t rlly see it tho)

And in the end even if we didn’t catch anything there were always surprises. It could range from grandmas giving us free food or us catching any kinda weird creatures (cicada, rhino beetles, frog, crabs , tadpoles etc etc) or we‘d find abandoned memorials and all that funky stuff (on my hunt two years ago I only found a dead rhino :((

(Random note but this is prolly why I absolutely adore botw yk. It’s literally my childhood experience abt exploring and always getting rewarded for it)

But yea all the homies moved out and I’m too big to crawl into peoples properties but the forests, the bugs and the shrines are all there. I’m super duper ultra excited to go spirit hunting again

Now that I think of it, the day my grandma passes all my physical connection to this childhood are gonna be cut off. My mom and my aunt plan to demolish her house and sell the land once she passes so I prolly won’t have a reason to visit that town again. I’m Deffo gonna find other ways to have fun but it’d deffo feel more tourist-y since I‘ll no longer have a proper „home“ there

SINCE I JUST MADE A POST ABT STUPID STUFF I BELIEVE IN here are somewhat supernatural events/myths I‘ve encountered/heard about growing up (this rant is gonna be long so imma cut it here)

-> The dark realm game, played this while I was hanging out in a school in Japan for a month. Basically during recess you could hop and chill on tires and my pals were explaining to me that the reality around the tire area was unstable. They taught me that shadows looking more purple than others or the heat wobbly view thing taking longer to fade were signs of a portal to the „other realm“ being partially open. That’s why we had a strict rule of never being on the ground of the tire area for more than 10 seconds.

-> The pillow thing, basically a myth my mom taught me about the spirit of pillows being super judgy. She believes that every pillow houses a spirit which is why in our household it’s strictly forbidden to step on pillows that are being used for sleep. There’s also a saying that if you wake up with your feet on your pillows it means that the judgement of the pillow spirit has started. By the third time your feet end up on your pillow you’re getting dragged down to the dark realm (according to my mom). THIS HAPPENED TO ME TWICE. IM COOKED

-> MY GRANDMAS DOLLS. In Japan you have the tradition of putting up dolls on the third of March to celebrate girlhood and my grandma stores them in this huge closet during the rest of the year. As a kid she’d actually make me sleep in this closet with the dolls because it was super spacious and during the time I slept there I had this dream every now and there of me going to the shrine next door and spotting a huge hole in the middle (legit couldn’t see the bottom). Since the dream was so reoccurring I decided to pull together a gang of pals to go investigate. The shrine obviously didn’t have a hole so we decided to investigate the forest around the shrine instead. We were walking around and not finding much til we found a tiny pillar made of stone with kanjis engraved on it. I thought it was a gravestone til my grandma told me that it’s just a way to indicate that it’s the highest point of the forest. Didn’t have that dream again ever since but it’s a cool story nonetheless (actual pic of her dolls and the shrine entrance)

-> in Okinawa you have a certain tree that’s rlly big and bushy (I FORGOT THE NAME AGAIN). Our tour guide told us that if your heart is pure, you can spot fairies in it. My lil bro at that time was 4 and told us he saw a bat in there, tho it was literally daytime and no one else saw anything. Either he’s delulu or we’ve got brainrotted hearts

-> this time it’s not in Japan but it’s in GERMANY, it’s the DRACHENSTEIN (in English it’s called Dragon Stone, I really really really wanna go there). According to my German teacher this is a place where supposedly a dragon was slain! Since there are a lot of vineyards over there legends say that the wine produced in that region contains a bit of dragon blood. Legends also say that during a certain time of the year (I forgot), dragons tend to gather around that stone. I‘LL LET YOU KNOW WHEN I CHECK IT OUT!! If you’re a fan of myth and wanna visit Germany I really recommend doing a trip alongside the Rhine river, it’s full of whimsy myths and legends (most famous one is Lorelei if I remember right)

-> ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN FRANCE. We were on my uncles 10 years wedding anniversary, I got bored so I decided to venture into the bushes and prolly went a bit too far. I landed in a huge plain and it was basically midnight so it was hella dark out you couldn’t see anything. But then there was a dead tree trunk that was for some reason soft silvery light blue?? It was such a weird glow because you could only see it from certain angles from a certain distance. Now that I think of it I think it was just the moonlight, no one could spot me for a solid 30mins while I was sitting there which was cool af

Anyways ik there’s more but that’s what I could remember for now

All the stupid stuff I believe in

LOCAL GODS: while I don’t believe in a single all powerful all knowing god that created this universe, I believe in minor gods that are more local? Like I fully believe in the god that’s living in the shrine next to my grandmas house who’s responsible for her neighborhood and I go there every year to ask them to tell my grandpas soul to stop cursing me (because every time I visit my grandma something always happens that ensures I can’t leave for a week)

OBJECTS HAVING SOULS: my momma always told me that any non living thing that gets treated with love and respect eventually gets a soul (and/or eventually becomes a god like being). So to me any hand crafted plushie has some form of sentience and I’m fully convinced my ladybug plushie my elementary teacher made for me is a crazy op lucky charm. Another example are my grandmas ancient hand crafted dolls that prolly cursed me when I dropped 5 of them sobsob (they’re the reason I’m 2 years behind on my studies can’t change my mind)

FAE STUFF: yk how people talk abt parts of forests being fae traps and all? I BELIEVE ALLAT because you cannot convince me this circle of glowing leaves will do absolutely nothing if I step in it

DEATH NOT BEING THE END: nah something gotta happen. Maybe we’ll ascend into a higher being (my theory is a spatial 4D creature) or maybe we’ll turn into lil fragments of souls capable of infiltrating destiny

SPIRITS AND CREATURES: dragons, ghosts, whisps, all those folklore gremlins… they’re all real they’re just super good at hiding. You cannot tell me this super dense dark forest hides nothing but deers and cockroaches

THE BACKROOMS: not the actual backroom but something close adjacent. For some reason I have a vivid childhood memory of being in the back seat of the car my mom was driving and as I looked behind me, I saw crossroads folding in on themselves. That spot isn’t too far away from home so I go there regularly, no matter how much I search I cannot find anything that looks like crossroads

There’s prolly more but that’s all I can think of rn. I’m personally not leaning towards anything that’s organized religion vibed but I deffo like having magic in my life

Being all logic and rational and scientific feels restricting to me tbh, idk if it’s just because I’m an artist or if it’s human nature in general

I remember back in 3rd grade we had this one weirdo music teacher

while all the other classes were singing those christmas christian songs he would make us sing german folk songs

One of them was abt a crazy jolly guy named Bolle stabbing people and getting beaten up by random people and trying to kill himself by laying on train tracks but the train didnt come for 2 weeks so he just rotted there

And that kinda became one of my subconscious oc inspos
